I love both the PS3 and Xbox 360... Both have their advantages and disadvantages. However, one area where the Xbox 360 has a major problem is it's controller. Sony had it right with their controller design ever since the original PlayStation. The Dualshock and SIXAXIS feel very comfortable. What makes the really big difference is the d-pad. This is where Microsoft really needs to do something. Playing most 2-D games is next to impossible with the 360's controller. It's all over the place! I couldn't even play a simple game of Pac-Man with that d-pad.

I'm hoping in the near future Microsoft decides to design and release a better controller, mostly in the fact of that terrible d-pad. I'd love to play 2-D games like Braid but not like this...

I agree with you about the D-pad, it's horrible. Other than that it's the perfect controller for me. Dualshock is too small for my hands.

I think MS designed their controller with the vision in mind that their platform(first xbox) would be geared towards 3D gaming in general and that side-scrollers and 2d fighting games were going to die off or something. But still, no excuse to slack off in any departments. And while on that note, the d-pad on either controllers have been long neglected. In recent years its not even used for movement in 95% of the games.

I think the D-Pad on the 360 sucks ^%$^ However i think the placement of the analogue sticks on the 360 is far better. both too low forces my thumbs down when trying to keep close to the bumper buttons. Having one higher up is alot more comfortable. Seeing as i hardly ever use the d-pad or 4xarrows on either controller... i prefer the 360 one overall See...It's all preference :)

I hate the 360 D-Pad. It's the only flaw in the controller.

agree with most in here, apart from the D-pad the 360 controller is the best controller...

No, no, NO!!!

The ps3 controller is practically BROKEN!!!! its a poor attempt at something created over 10 years ago!!

Look....the ps3 is so bad that it needs to use SHAPES instead of LETTERS, it is for tiny handed illiterates.

The L2 and R2 buttens are a Joke, they suck, ask everyone....its not even a trigger, its a mushy button

the thumbsticks on the 360 are so ergonomical in their placement , the right analog is lower making button pressing easier.

The triggers on a 360 are actual TRIGGERS!!!!! they feel so comfortable

the size of the controller is just so much better for the average 18+ year old (youll spend most of ur life 18+ btw)

THERE IS NO D-PAD on a ps3. its D-Buttons!!!!!

The dpad on a 360 is easy, yes easy to use becasue its a floating pad, street fighter games just feel easy

- go ahead and try a shoryuken on a ps3 controller dpad.. goodluck son.

The dude from dreamcast helped design the 360 controller, there is thought, ingenuity, ergonomics, in the 360 controller

....the ps3 controller should come with a bottle of asprin for the arthritis it gives me..

let's be honest though, how many games even use the d-pad for something other then quick item selections?

really? cause I use the analog for those too as do the majority of 360 gamers most likely. In all seriousness though, XBLA games aren't the reason one would buy a 360. How many legitimate games use the d-pad on a regular basis.

Xbox 360 controller is way better. I was kind of weary about it before I bought my console after using the PS2 controller for so long, but once I got it in my hands I didn't know how I ever used the PS2 controller.

Matter of preference I guess, I can't stand playing a game like sonic with the analog stick. But don't you think one would expect a good D-pad rather than a clucky one?

While I think the 360 dpad sucks, overall it feels like the best controller designed to date, classically speaking. The wii controller is the most advanced, so i'll leave that out of this.

I hate these controller threads. I mean, really, come on. Its a matter of using each controller for a period of time to get comfortable. A PS gamer won't like a Xbox controller. And a Xbox gamer won't like a PS controller. But if they give it time, they'll see both are more than able to serve your gaming needs.

well this isn't strictly true one of the controllers if going to be more comfortable than the other, there's no point trying to equivocate on the matter one of the controllers fits better than the other, yes some people will say I'm used to X controller but in truth one controller is designed better than the other, by this Im talking ergonomics based on anthropometric data, following this the 360 gamepad became what it is today, with a fair amount of neglect to the D-pad as it was relegated to a secondary role.

The D-Pad? That's for selecting weapons right? Ergonomically speaking the 360 controller is in a different league to anything else out there.

The main reason I have never bought a PS3 is because I can't stand the controller - that and my wife would divorce me!!!!!!!

overall i prefer the PS3 pad, i like the button and analogue placements there comfortable for me. the only advantage the 360 has over the DS3 imo is the shape of the analog sticks. the indents for your thumbs makes hell of a difference. my hands can get incredibly sweaty when playing games for a long time and with the DS3 sometimes my thumbs slip off the sticks.

iv been tempted to hack out some indentations in my DS3 but i think i will wait till i have a replacement incase i completely cock it up.

Well, I bought the Namco Virtual Arcade for the 360 and games like Pac-Man and Rolling Thunder I seem to have a hard time playing. Games like Halo 3, Midnight Club, Fallout 3 and whatnot are just fine. I definitely like the heftyness of the controller (and 360's chatpad is SO much better than the PS3's keypad) but I just wish the d-pad were more like the PS3's for classic games or games like Braid.

Judging from your poor use of grammar, it sounds like the PS3 controller is perfect for you.

PS3 controller is my preference because I've been using it since PSX.

It's all about genre's, FPS's are better with the 360 controller, and due to the triggers I like racer's more too, however, sports games, fighters, platformers, third person action games etc I find the DS3 superior. And as overlooked as it is sixaxis is a really cool feature, when done right it adds another layer of immerision, like in GTA4 to reload your gun shake your controller up and down and he reloads, it's a fun way to reload :P

Oh and about the triggers, You can just put the middle finger of each hand on the L2 and R2, the index fingers on L1 and R1. Voila, you now have complete access to all of the controls.

For the people commenting on Dualshock 3's R2 and L2 triggers.

In 1 and a half years of gaming I've NEVER had my finger slip off the trigger button, and if you REALLY hate them, you can spend 5 freaking dollars and get these.

Called "Real Triggers". They're 5 bucks off Amazon.com, they click right on the button. Problem solved, ok?

And to the guy saying Ps3 controllers have to use shapes because the people that use them are illterate, look at this.

Lol.

While the D-pad is crap on the 360, I still prefer the controller over any other controller for most games. Fighting games, that's a different story.

360 controller is the best! the ps3 controller is terrible IN MY OPINION....it's good but for shooters 360 wins! it's also the right size! ps3 controller is 2 small for me personally! the ps3 is only good for fighting games!
