Months before, during, and after the price cuts according to NPD...I think

-June 2007-

PS3 - 98,500

360 - 198,400

-July 2007-*PS3 drops to $499

PS3 - 159,000

360 - 170,000

-August 2007- *360 drops Elite to $449, Pro to $349, and the Core to $279

PS3 - 130,600

360 - 276,000

-Sept. 2007-*Halo 3 released

PS3 - 119,400

360 - 527,800

---

-June 2008- *Metal Gear Solid 4 released
PS3 - 405,000

360 - 219,000

-August 2008-

PS3 - 185,600

360 - 195,200

-September 2008- *PS3 40GB upgraded to 80GB only $399 | *360 120GB Elite drops to $399, Pro to $299, Arcade to $199

PS3 - 232,400

360 - 347,200

-October 2008-

PS3 - 190,000

360 - 371,000

---

-July 2009-

PS3 - 121,800

360 - 202,800

-August 2009- *PS3 Slim $299, 160GB $399 | *Microsoft allegedly dropping the Elite to $299

???

The big exclusives this year would be Halo ODST vs Uncharted 2, and possibly GT5 vs FM3. Which will prevail? With 3 different consoles so closely priced this is one of the most competitive times in gaming history. It will be interesting to see which console comes out on top.

The Elite is not a separate SKU. I've never seen anything so misleading in my entire life. It's effectively not even the same thing as upgrading the premium with a higher capacity hard drive, it's trading the hard drive upgrade for the component cables, assuming the photographs of the boxes can be trusted. The Elite always was a frickin' red herring.

well, from what it looks like there, the ps3 slim and whatnot will have no effect on the order of console sales in the us. in the months when the 360 drops in price, it annihilates the ps3. when ps3 drops, it just gets closer to the ps3. with both consoles doing stuff this time around, sales ratios will stay roughly the same.

Sony does the same thing. Nintendo should be commended for sticking with only 1 sku.

And the Elite is black, not red.

Uncharted 2 doesn't have the selling power of Halo. So Halo ODST will push more consoles than Uncharted 2 will.

TC, the PS3 didn't dropped to 399 in oct08, it was in oct07. If you want to make a thread like this at least get your sales data right.

LoL dat was clevor u r rite it es a black herring my bad! What I meant, and let me be clear here, is that the word "Elite" is one of the most overgenerous marketing terms I've ever seen in my life. If they change the word "Premium" to "Elite" and change their white plastic to black plastic, it's not really a new product, it's the same damn thing with a bigger hard drive minus component cables. Whoop'dy frickin' doo. It reminds me of achievements. They're not achievements just because they're called "achievements." What they are is a waste of time. Nintendo should be admonished for selling an obscenely overpriced re-editioning of the Gamecube with gimmick controls. They should be COMMENDED for their brilliant and highly marketable introduction of true 1:1 motion sensing peripherals mid-generation ($20 for an upgrade that enormous? Sign me up!). Let us take a moment to compare the brilliance of Wii Motion Plus to the bungling ineptitude of Project Natal and the "Sony motion controller's" announcements and highly unlikely releases. Sony has just stood at the top of the stairs this generation and hasn't stopped tumbling down until the Slim was announced, at which point Sony stumbled into a frickin' gold mine and held the biggest, fattest gold nugget we've seen this generation for the world to see.

Which is unfortunate, because I can't see myself spending ten dollars to play ODST, but I could see myself marathon running Uncharted 2 during finals week. ODST isn't even a big exclusive. If it sells, I give up. I seriously hope consumers are not that fantastically gullible.

Dont downplay ODST, for u likely know little about it. the campaign has been expanded. firefight looks amazing. all halo 3 DLC is included so ppl like me dont have to buy the mythic map pack, plus the 3 newest maps that halo 3 owners wont be able to download for months. plus the upcoming reach beta should be nice. not to mention its halo and is expanding upon the deep universe. offcourse the game will sell. Its Halo, its Bungie, they make AAA games, offcourse ODST is a big exclusive.

Do you have a good link for that? I think you're referring to the initial 40GB which replaced the 20GB and ran alongside the $499 80GB(*sometimes bundled with MGS4).

The drop I listed was the $499 80GB software BC 80GB PS3 unit to the new $399 80GB(basically upgraded 40GB) in sept. 2008.

I'll upgrade the chart to include the smaller sku changes.

Yeah, the CNN link I have shows the 60GB dropping from $599 to $499 in July 2007. That's what my chart shows.

Firefight is horde mode. I've seen the gameplay videos. I think it's hysterical. The Halo 3 DLC is pretty lulzy and I sincerely hope that's not of anyone's rationale for buying this. The campaign has been expanded equals, what, exactly. As in expansion pack? One new multiplayer mode and an expanded campaign? Ha ha. As far as it being Halo, fabulous, it certainly is, but I don't care for Halo. There was another Halo game released this year called Halo Wars, and it had a stinky ass and got a 6.5 on this website. When I read "deep universe," I lol'd irl.

I'm talking about that the 40G PS3 was introduced in oct07 for 399, becoming the lower priced PS3 sku, the 80G dropped to 499 and the 60G discontinued. After that, in the first few months of 08 the PS3 outsold the 360 in NPD.

Judging by past history drops by MS, me thinks they are going to have a $149 Arcade and $249 Elite at the end of September.

You're taking the names too literally. Like it's forcing you to consider it "l33t". It's just a name. It's the top of the line 360. The PS3 does the same thing, they just don't have names for it.

Anyways, I couldn't be bothered to read your whole rant. That line at the end is hilarious. Congratulations on that.

They already cut the Elite price to 300, maybe they cut the arcade but I don't think so.

Hmm. I'll definitely research that and upgrade the chart to include this change.

Here's the sales for that period...

-October 2007-

PS3 - 121,000

360 - 366,000

-November 2007-

PS3 - 466,000

360 - 770,00

-December 2007-

PS3 - 797.600

360 - 1,260,000

firefight is based on horde. does that make ti a bad thing? no. cause horde was fun and so will firefight. for someone who didnt buy the mythic maps, yes, its some incentive to buy odst. The 3 new maps are also a grab for me. halo does have a deep unvierse........6 novels, 2 graphic novels, and the games. Halo Wars may have gotten a 6.5 here but its well recieved at metacritic/gamerankings. u dont like halo???? ok fine. join the other 3 thousand VS the Millions who love that AAA franchise to death.

Good assessment. Unless MS can kill the hype, I could see that happening in Aug/Sept as well.

when did they cut the elite to 299?. also i wish they would cut the arcade out of the whole picture. make the 60 gig 360s 199. then they would sell some systems i bet.

Maybe GT5 will get released in Japan, but I sure it won't make it for U.S. release. Definitely not before Forza 3. Halo ODST is going to smash everything except maybe MW2.
