Hey all Was just thinking about this today. Most multiplats sell alot more copies on the 360 compared to the PS3. A couple of years ago that wouldnt have struck me odd, but today the install-base is mostly the same. How come the 360 counterpart of a multiplat game still sells about 2x as much as the PS3 version? Any theories on this? Not that i mind ofcourse, i dont really care if there are 100.000 people playing the same game as me, or 200.000. But i still find it a little weird. On another note, it seems there are mostly PS3 boys on this forum, while the most popular game on gamespots list are mostly x360 and PC. Also a little odd. Just tossing it out there, feel free to comment.

With a difference of 4 million, there is bound to be more sold on the 360.

It depends on the game and who the target audience is. Many Capcom games such as SFIV, DMC4 and I think RE5 just to name a few have sold more on the PS3 because they appeal to Sony's Eastern and Western fanbase. Meanwhile many Western style games and shooters loose a lot of sales because they don't appeal to the Eastern fanbase of Sony's which is a much larger % of Sony's fanbase then the 360s.

So basically if it's a game that is a shooter or a sports game that appeals to the NA audience, it will most likely sell more on the 360 because a bigger % of their fanbase is in that ONE region. Games that have broader appeal and aren't appealing mainly to the NA audience like fighters, many Eastern games and some classic franchises like Tomb Raider, etc. sell better on the PS3.

It's all about fanbase. In the end games always sell enough on BOTH systems to justify continued support so who cares

Because most of these multiplats that youre comparing are bigger in the US and Europe. Multiplats are slightly better on the 360 so buying multiplats for the 360 is a trend people stick with.

Japan nearly closes the PS3:360 sales gap but people over there dont buy the multiplats youre talking about so thats a big chunk of sales gone.

Is your source this forum, where people are mostly talking about shooters and NPD?

Wasn't PS3's original install base mostly comprised of people who just wanted a cheap Blu-Ray player?

I noticed this as well. I don't understand it either really. Both the X360 and PS3 are very close in terms of hardware sales and yet most games sell almost 2x more on X360.

In 2009, when the install base difference was even bigger, ps3 sold more copies total that the 360. So first get your facts straight and look at the worldwide numbers instead of just US where the 360 has twice the install base.

The numbers this board focuses most on, partly because they're some of the few numbers available and partly because many people on the board are American, could give that impression.

But the tie ratios for the 360 and the PS3 are ~8.9 (US only) and ~8.3 (WW) respectively, which is not a big difference.

Prehaps as PS3 users buy a large range of games? Large number of exclusives too. VG charts puts the years total software sales at around equal.

If I owned both a 360 and PS3, id be buying multiplats for the 360 too to get my moneys worth out of XBL. Thats my bet as to where most of the difference comes from.

I think that impression stems from SW's infatuation for NPD numbers and SW's greater interest in games that focus on the NA audience, where the difference in install bases is most pronounced. The fact is the PS3 had significantly higher software sales last year despite a smaller install base.
