PS3 and Xbox 360 'more powerful' than most PCs, says Pachter from GameTrailers!

Analyst Michael Pachter has said he believes that PC gaming is in decline and he places the blame squarely on improved capabilities of consoles, which he says can outmatch most PCs.

"The PC Market if you think about it as packaged products sold - not subscriptions like World of Warcraft - it's only like 6 or 7 per cent of total game sales," he stated during his Pach-Attack segment on GameTrailers. "It's becoming a declining industry because you can get a near PC experience on a console."

He continued: "The PS3 is a pretty powerful box, and it is probably more powerful than 90 per cent of PC's out there. The 360 is probably more powerful than 85 per cent of PC's out there."

Pachter went onto comment that consoles were the best place for developers and publish to make games for, saying they had the largest audience

"You say 'no no there's a billion PCs out there' but there aren't a billion PC gamers. PC game sales tell you that that number is a very small number."

I don't see anything wrong with what he said. I'm a gamer and yet my PC is without a doubt weaker than my PS3. Most people can't afford (or find it worthwhile) to buy a gaming rig every four years, even gamers.

While true that in no way means the market is smaller.

He says 6-7% of game sales are from PC, and yet last year the PC raked in over $13 billion dollars which was I believe more than the amount the 360/PS3 pulled in combined. I believe $1.1 billion was from WoW.

That may be true, since there are far more PCs in the world that aren't used for gaming. We all know they aren'tquite as powerful as most of the top notch gaming rigs though. I have 3 PC's , none of which are built for gaming, heck, my Sega Dreamcast is probably more powerful than most of my computers in my house.

My PC is more powerful than 100% of PS3s and 360s. I am not understanding why he compares it to every single PC which may be used for business rather than recreation.

gaming wise he is right most oems come with on board or very low end gpus like the ati 4350

Lol, buying an Alienware PC is like buying a PS3 for $6,000. Making your own rig will give you the same performance at the fraction of the price.

The 6-7 percent of sales part. If he even knew about PC gaming rather than spouting nonsense, he'll know that most sales come from Internet stores such as Direct2Drive or Steam.

my computer does cod4 at 800x600, my xbox does it a lot better. My PC was bought last year, so yes xbox/ps3 are more powerful than most PCs, but not gaming ones.

That's according to a new survey of European and UK gamers run by the two bodies.

The two say the PC's popularity is a sigh of the shift in gamer demographics - away from just core experiences to more accessible fare.

PC hugely outnumbers other platforms - Wii and 360 only account for a PC-topping 36 per cent when combined (their specific stats were not released).

I'm not questioning whether he is right or wrong. I am questioning why he needs to point this out. You're right though. What does my PC being more powerful than consoles have to do with anything? It is the same thing as me asking "what does the PS3 and 360 being more powerful than most PC's have to do with anything?" I'm questioning his motive for pointing this out.
