Sony doesnt give sell through (to consumer) numbers. They cant. They can only give to retailer numbers. Anyone who thought that number was to consumers is simply misinformed.Cali3350
It's sold to customers. Sony announced it in their statement. They can get numbers from NPD, especially since they pay for the data.

Yes NPD doesnt track stores like walmart, one of the biggest distributors in the world :|
NO company has TO CONSUMER numbers. Best Buy doesnt report to Sony on sales, they only order more units.

NPD estimates numbers for Walmart and Toys R Us. So even if they aren't credible to you, they are credible to the entire video game business world. MS, Sony, and Nintendo use them. Video game publishers like EA, Ubisoft, etc. use them. Even without Walmart they are the official numbers that are used for counting what is sold to customers.
So yes, Sony should have numbers from NPD especially since they pay for it.

\You know what, believe what you want. If honestly think that number is consumer sales, good for you. Dont be surprised when the point is clarified though.

This is not a case of believe what you want. Sony SAID this in their press release. I'm only going with what Sony reported.
When Sony, MS and Nintendo report these types of numbers, they have to use the correct numbers as they have stock and shareholders that they have to report to. If these numbers are skewed to those, then they are liable for many bad things to happen to them as a company. If Sony "reports" 1.2million sold to consumers, then its 1.2million sold to consumers. It may be a bit more, it may be a bit less. Sony and Nintendo use sold to consumers and M$ reports sold to retailers.Dilrod
Finally some one with some logic. If they state its sold for consumers it is to them. If its to the retailers its to the retailers. They cannot twist the numbers or lie since they will get sued.
Sony and Nintendo use sold to consumers and M$ reports sold to retailers.Dilrod
Absoluely NOT. All three report shipped numbers. It can be no other way. Try reading a Sony Annual Report. It is perfectly clear.
Still,Sony could estimate retail sales and that estimate could be pretty accurate. But your statement above is completely false.

Well one thing is for sure, I'd take Sony's words over yours.

These numbers mean a heck of a lot more than any other numbers because they are counting all retail sources and not sample numbers from some retailers.

Not so. Nintendo and Sony both reported earlier in 2007 that they will start using sold to customers as their numbers.

You are misinformed then. Read the e-mail on VGCHartz. That at least I can believe since they emailed Sony asking the question...

Look, and this is to everyone else reading this. There is NO current established reporting procedure back to manufacturers in real time. And NPD only releases their data to paying customers (sony) HOURS before we see them. READ the email from Sony folks. It is sold to RETAIL.
I will say Nintendo can say customers just on the reality it is 99% sold out...close enough.
Why are we still arguing this? How many times does it have to be proven that all three report sold to retailers. Sony once admitted counting stock they shipped to their warehouses, cause those would sell eventually.
Do companies constantly try to mislead that or any information to their benefit? Yes
Should you trust a Major Company over most individuals? No. Unless your a blind fanboy.
