Numerous PlayStation 3 owners claim that their consoles have stopped functioning correctly, if at all, since installing the latest PS3 firmware update.

Users report, via the official PlayStation forums, running into numerous hardware problems since updating the PS3's firmware to the recently released version 2.0. The complaints include a slowdown in console functionality, the loss of content, and even consoles being unable to read discs or ceasing to function at all.

Next-Gen has contacted Sony for comment.

Funny. Cows were quick to jump on Microsoft when they experienced some update problems.

Karma's a funny thing, always ends up bitin' ya on the ass.... :D

Too many hardware revisions during such a short period of time is my guess, not enough time to make sure they're 100% compatible with the same software updates. Sony needs to get their **** together.

This is not just a 2.0 problem, one of the best kept secrets is how during a firmware update if your ISP or power is interrupted it bricks the entire system.

I only know 4 people that own PS3s including myself and it happened to two of the guys with PS3s one had his sister turn the system off in the middle of an update and the other had his ISP go out while the update was being applied.

Both had to send the system back to Sony to get it repaired and one actually had to pay for the repair to be done because Sony would not do it for free without the reciept that he had lost.

If this is true thats awful, I never want to see someone's system trashed. I'd wait for a bit more confirmation for this.

Karma is a biatch though.

(Incidently most of the 360's bricked were because they were hacked I believe)

That's the rational and mature response. However, the System Wars response should be to jump all-in at any news one way or the other. I brought this up originally because Sony-fans criticize every bit of 360 news and rumors without waiting for confirmation..I figured jumping to conclusions is fair game. Besides, enough people on that forum were complaining that at least some of them must be legit (from a scientific sampling basis, at least). If Cows can say 30% of 360s get RROD from nothing other than assumption, I'm going to assume that 25% of all PS3s are getting bricked right now....

Well, the next time a cow starts on about the RROD, we can throw F2CC (Firmware 2.0 Corrupted Console) right back at them.

Look guys the last thing I am is a Sony fan, but RROD are a real issue (although cows obviously overblow it and absolutely hate the fact MS will fix/replace for 3 yrs for free) but this is just a very vague unconfirmed rumour. Lets not get too carried away eh? If it was that bad there would be people posting it on here that it had happenned to them.

I'm glad I kept my 1.90 version. But sooner or later I will have to get it. Since newer PS3 games are installing these updates.

I'll tell you what... My PS3 gets bricked and they can't fix it... Then give me a handy caped POS....... They better get ready to rumble. Because I'm not excepting anything that isn't of the same standard.

People turning off systems while they are upgrading firmware bricks systems. I knew this would happen, when I upgraded my ps3 I was thinking alot of people would screw this up.

any game that comes out after a firmware update has it on the disc, that's how i got 1.94 with R&C

personally haven't had any issues with 2.0 update, although i hear a lot of people having issues with slowdown which might be fixed by turning off that useless stupid news update bar, i know i turned mine off just because (didn't have any slowdown with it)... there's been some other errors too, they're probably going to release a 2.1 update to fix the issues with 2.0

stuff like this happens all the time in the computer world it's just commonplace (what happens when you start making consoles like computers), i know with my mac it's fairly common to get a mac os X update that screws up your computer, then they release a patch a few days later and that fixes everything

as for the update bricking, imo they need to have a backup image on the disc or something so that if power goes out or something random happens that you won't have a bricked console, otherwise you just have to be a little more cautious and make sure nobody is fooling with your system otherwise they get a beatin'

They mistaked their way into last place...and they will probably mistake themselves out of the console buisiness.

Again. That's the rational reaction. However, Cows don't hesitate to pounce on ANY bad 360 news, then neither am I.

The PS3 forums have plenty of longtime posters that say that the update bricked their system. And contrary to what some have said in this thread, they DIDN'T turn off their system and it STILL bricked.

I don't care if my system gets bricked.... Because they have to fix it. I care because they no longer make 60 GB units... So if my 60 GB breaks what are they gonna give me? A 80 GB? No thanks, I want max BC. Thats what I bought the 60 GB for.

ridiculour rumor that's being reported on an industry website http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7937&Itemid=2

and reported on the Official Sony Forums: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=2144203&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

There's a little more to this than some 360 fanboy trying to irritate Sony-fans. While I think it's epic-funny that Karma continues to kick the crap out of Sony, there's something to this rumor.... How big a deal it is remains to be seen, but there's plenty of folks on the Sony board that look legit claiming that their PS3 was bricked. Sony-fans didn't hesitate to jump all over the RROD and blow it out of proportion, nor did they hesitate to blow the 360's update problem of about a year ago out of proportion.

Payback's a beeotch Cows!

lol in computer debates people use the same argument to bash macs because updates and non-crashing is what mac people tout, then apple releases an update and some people have bad issues so the pc people goto war proclaiming the mac as trash, then apple releases patches for different mac hardware and it's fixed, but of course the pc people completely ignore this because then they would be wrong, nobody wants to be wrong grrrrr wrong bad! if i look bad on the internet then the terrorists win! aaarrrrghgh

oh and that electronics war has been going on for over 2 decades, rinse repeat wipe hands on pants

I wouldn't know, I don't debate with Mac users. I let them live in their own private little world and don't disturb them for fear it'll push them over the edge.

yeah, they're basic casuals (kinda like the wii! j/k), i also think it's funny the whole fashion gimmick thing of macs, like if you wear a turtle neck or buy starbucks, buy a mac

i actually have a mac myself (using it right now), bought it from a computer repair friend for cheap, pretty much use it for email and photoshop that's it :| EDIT: i also use it as a shelf

Look guys the last thing I am is a Sony fan, but RROD are a real issue (although cows obviously overblow it and absolutely hate the fact MS will fix/replace for 3 yrs for free) but this is just a very vague unconfirmed rumour. Lets not get too carried away eh? If it was that bad there would be people posting it on here that it had happenned to them.blue_hazy_basic

I know, I know. I just wanted to have a little fun with it. ;)

This is not a big deal. If your console is bricked from a firmware update, then you can send it in for repair. Anything and everything that requires a firmware update can brick itself if the update does not apply fully and is interrupted by a power outage of some kind. These things happen. It's not 100% perfect.

I was one of them that said that I was scared that my PS3 bricked in the PS forums!

But I just shut it off and turned it on and it worked.

If this is true thats awful, I never want to see someone's system trashed. I'd wait for a bit more confirmation for this.

Karma is a biatch though.

(Incidently most of the 360's bricked were because they were hacked I believe)

Looks like confirmation to me

Not to me. After every update you get these type of threads. I'll wait for some official news.

if you're waiting for one from sony, you'll be waiting a while.. they STILL haven't publicly acknowledged the ps2's DDE problem.....

I really hope mine does not brick. I've had so many issues with other systems all ready.

This digitally connected generation has some great pros, but quite a few large cons...

Funny. Cows were quick to jump on Microsoft when they experienced some update problems.

Karma's a funny thing, always ends up bitin' ya on the ass.... :D

Sony can send 100,000 people to literally break a PS3 after PS3 and you won't reach the 360's level of brickness.

I haven't had a problem with 2.0 update even leaveing the information bar on. The only problem I have had is when my IP had some issues the following day after the update (no internet) that was fixed with a new modem and bame sunday night the IP had a major failure that took several hours to fix at a local server box. Now both times this happened my PS3 was slower than anything (because the XMB information tool bar was trying to find a internet connection is my thoughts). Reason for this is because as soon as I turned the information bar off it worked as good or better as it always has.

This may be something that some of us can check out to find a cure for others on here. This could happen from a slow down in internet speeds or the wireless signal drops in strenth somewhat. This can happen with any type of IP.

As for updates createing problems over the years I have had tons of them from M$ when they update the Windows OS's. Some would take hours to correct and some would require a complete reinstall of the OS before it could be fixed.

Just some things that we all should think about.

Maybe because there are so few Ps3's? :|

i think its because Euro gamers are downloading the US firmware update...if thats the case, then thats their fault seeing as Sony cleary tells u not to :P
