You can't just make a game use 1GB less RAM.

It doesn't work that way.

Don't try to say it is possible with "optimization" unless you are a programmer. And you obviously aren't because you ARE saying that.

Sooshy

whats the RAM (system and Video) requirements for Assassin's Creed, The Orange Box and Call of Duty 4?

What is the resolution of thoses games on consoles?

It would be ignorant to suggest an OS running in the background isn't eating up some memory. Also, developers do optomize their games on consoles. Gears of War on PC requires at least a gig of ram, and that's not even counting the video memory. That's going to get you playing on minimal settings with lower resolution, worse textures, worse lighting, etc. than on the 360.

Yes, my OS is running 300MB in backround... I have 2gigs of ram and 768Mb on video card...

I don't know about you, but gears looks better on PC... mostly when I can play native 1200P... And if I had Vista I would be running DX10+AA.

If you want I could show you how much ram Gears of war is eating on my PC.

That's nice that you can run it better than the 360, but my point is that if you run it on the minimal settings, it's not going to look as good yet it require more power.

???

First of all, I couldn't tell you. It's not going to be 720p, though.

Secondly, you have 2GB of ram, and 768MB of video memory. The 360 has a total of 512MB to share. Now, I know the PC version maxed out looks better than the 360 version, but the 360 version isn't too far behind and it has less than a quarter of the memory your machine has. See what I'm saying?

Sooshy

the 360 also runs the game at a quarter what his machine does...

He gets like 120 FPS.

The 360 gets an unstable, fluctuating 30 FPS.

Just good old monitoring overall system ram... I know it's very unprecise way of doing it. I should Even do a fresh restart of my PC, but it just gives a clear indication on how much this game is not a ram killer.

What is there to doubt? EA announced the million mark after a couple weeks.

EA announced how many units were shipped to retailers. Half of them could still be sitting on shelves or in the bargain bin.

So platinum status now includes shipped copies?

That specific report included Orange Box and Rock Band in the same list, I somehow don't think those numbers meant shipped.

oh... well... that includes everything you have running.

OS, Gears of War, any anti-virus, internet browser, and anything else.

That is horribly inaccurate.

XP alone would account for like half of that of that 700MB. And if you have Norton(which sucks) there is another 100MB assuming you didn't disable it. If it is some other anti-virus or if you turned it off.. then it wouldn't be too bad but still.

Nice sales :) Not surprising though, everyone who upgrades their PC buys Crysis to make it worth it :)

The funny thing is that if Crytek goes multiplatform their next game will be lucky to pass 1mln on PC

And then they'll end up selling the same amount of copies multi-plat as they did with an exclusive...

Maybe not a RAM killer, but it's still using more than the 360. Especially when considering that your RAM thing isn't counting the video memory.

PC uses more ram... Whoopy doooooo!

I still have too much ram for the game and your X360 doesn't have ram to spare... Maybe because I was running the game @ 120FPS on low resolution.

Like I said, ram was drooping when I was playing more then 2 minutes.

My point is that developers optomize their games on consoles. It's harder on PC because different brand parts and the architecture varies. You run into bugs and complatibility issues.

People often talk how consols use memory differently, but that's not entirely true. While they don't have OS to worry about, even with OS taking some memory average gaming PC has 2-3 times more memory than consoles. THere is a reason why when PCgames get ported to consoles their textures are downraged and the levels that were one single level in PC version are cut into multiple smaller ones in console versions

Sure, but there are limits to how much optimisation can achieve and no matter how much you optimize you won't be able to jump over the huge difference in memory, at most you might make the difference a bit smaller

I agree. They could optomize a Crysis port on the 360/PS3 for 10 years and it wouldn't reach the quality that a high-end PC can run it. I'm just saying, given the specs of the consoles, they're making the games look pretty damn good. Not too far behind PC games like you'd think just from going by numbers on paper.

This does not make much sense. If Crysis really sold 3 million copies in such a short time that means it is selling faster than Half Life 2 and that game already had a massive following from the previous installment. Great games like Battlefield 2 sold 2 million copies after a year and why did Crytek say they are not making another PC exclusive if the game is doing so remarkably well? There are like 200 people usually playing Crysis online and the numbers are decreasing but the game sold 3 million copies.

Well, it is as realistic as expecting no piracy :)

"if not for piracy" argument is just silly, with it we leave the reality and enter a fantasy land

Nah, the times of +$20mln budgeted exclusives is at end.

According to the latest issue of PC Gamer UK, Crysis has sold a whopping 3 million copies in half a year. I don't think I'm allowed to post scans, but I'm sure some of my fellow hermits can confirm this.

Also, Crysis Warhead is apparently going to be revealed in next month's issue... :D

BUT TEH PC GAMING IZ DYING!!??!?!?!

And Crytek is STILL complaining about piracy? What a bunch of whiners.

3 million copies at fifty bucks a pop is $150 million gross... even with a 100 million dollar budget they still are pulling in $50 million... and the last time I checked, the only games with that kind of budget were Shenmue and GTAIV.

Well, they need scapegoat. I mean historicaly when a PC dev went multiplatform the sales of their PC versions always drop like hell. Of course they do gain console sales, but I imagine loosing all those PC sales hurts pretty badly too. So they try to find a good excuse in hopes of fooling people enough to not have the sales drop

I dont doubt it that crysis sold that many copies. Like I have always been saying for awhile. PC games sell over a longer period time. Unlike consoles where the most copies sold are within the first few weeks and then sales die down. Even then, selling over 3 million copies in about 7 months is pretty good.

It is nice to hear. Shows that if enough marketing and publicity is given to a game, it will sell well on PC.

i mentioned it in the pc board, but the publisher sells these games to the retailers at somewhere around $38 per copy if i remember. i'm probably a bit off by a few bucks, but it's definitely around $10 less than what we pay.

and there's yet more to the math than that.

Packaging

Materials design

Shipping costs

Marketing

Disc pressing

all of these things and a few more take a slice of the pie. I'm sure they make even less than that $38. Maybe ~$20? Maybe less?

packaging+materials+shipping+discs aren't too bad for most games compared to raw dev costs, though they're definitely a part of it. some games like Rock Band are completely and totally ridiculous on shipping costs. the marketing budget is kinda fuzzy and falls outside of the usual price breakdown of a game, though

It just proves that good marketing = great sales.

I just love those douchebags like Ubisoft with their crappy ports and virtually zero marketing. So after that kind of game sells like crap on a PC, they instantly go to public with statements like "OMG PC GAMING IS DYING".

Well,

NOW WHAT BIATCHEZ?!

A game with such huge system requirements?

That is amazing.

Fantastic news.

It's going to be attention-grabbing to see how many weeks, or even days, "Crysis 2" will need in order to transcend 1,000,000.

Marketing

Dreams-Visions

Its worth noting marketing wise the game is incomparable to titles like Halo 3, GTA IV, Bioshock, Assasins Creed and
Gears of War.

Crysis's marketing only seemed to consist of internet ads and magazine advertisments.

Packaging=ya maybe costs a $1 at most.

Materials design=What?

Shipping costs=How much shipping cost per unit do you think a tiny box going in thousands will have?:?

Marketing? What does that have to do with the sales?Marketing is a pre-determined expense and is a part of the cost of making the game.

Disc presing?Oh comon that's pennies.

3 million is alot for consoles. Hell if Crysis sold 3 milllion on PS3 with a userbase of 13 mill thats a huge seller. But its not on PS3 its on PC. When you get down to it the PC is in almost every home in every first world country. Compared to that user base Crysis might as well sold 3 copies. PC gaming is dead 99% of people with PCs are not using them to play games any more, this isn't the 90s anymore. Sooner hermits face it the sooner they can move on to saving up for another graphics card in 6 months.
