PS3 Gathering Momentum Against Xbox 360

In the same simExchange report we referenced in the January game sales preview, analyst Jesse Divnich has provided hardware sales predictions as follows:

Xbox 360: 289,000 units
PS3: 200,000 units
Wii: 403,000 units
DS: 460,000 units
PSP: 250,000 units

Interestingly, although Sony's console continues to trail behind the competition, it does appear that the PS3 is continuing to narrow the margin by which it's outsold by the Xbox 360. Divnich sees this as a significant trend.

"Although there were no momentous changes in hardware trends, it should be noted that the Xbox 360 is expected to outsell the PS3 by 1.44 to 1, a decrease from November's 1.65 to 1 and December's 1.58 to 1. We consider this noteworthy as neither system had any superior exclusive releases or price drops in January and could be an early sign of the PS3 gathering momentum on the Xbox 360," Divnich noted.

If 2008 is indeed going to be a comeback year for the PS3, as more and more pundits are suggesting these days, then the console will need to continue to close that gap and even outsell the Xbox 360 occasionally. Another price drop combined with top software like Metal Gear Solid IV could perhaps help it do just that.

It'll certainly be interesting to see what the console landscape looks like post-GTA4. Sony has the better game library between then and now (assuming MGS4 is still on for a Q2 release) but MS has the ability to significantly lower the 360's price (considering they only dropped the Pro's price by $50 over its first 2 years) and generally does a good job with their bundles (better than Spiderman 3 on BR anyway). Eh, it was their first year. They do have momentum but not enough to do real damage to the 360 or even nudge the wii. In my opinion, 2009 will be a good time to buy a ps3. Basicly when FFXIII comes out, and home gets good reviews, and blu-ray movies come down in price and release older, good, classic movies. And having only 2 SKUs wouldn't hurt either.

Oh and the PS3 had a launch in Europe and god knows how many SKU's and price cuts and could only just SHIP more units than the 360, that pretty sad.

You've also achieved something else. For a long time now I've witnessed the decline of SW, crazy moderations and a vast increase in posters who's only goal is to try to get people moderated, especially when using alt accounts, while at the same time the good posters being moderated for the most minor of infractions until they quit. Well enough is enough, this will be my last post here for a long time, perhaps for good. The community has all but fallen apart, maybe its time to give Subsorian the chance to make it the sterile place he wants it to be.

Yeah, I know. This has been discussed in a million other threads. The only reason the PS3 outsold the 360 last year was because this was the PS3's debut year. The 360's numbers for most of the year were stronger overall, but the PS3 obviously started the '07 fiscal year better because it launched in the said year (i.e. the PS3 had a huge first month)... The PS3 is outselling the 360 by a decent amount in Europe, and the 360 has been outselling the PS3 pretty well in North America (I'm not discussing Japan because if you're not Nintendo there, at the moment you don't matter). Beating a 2nd year console by, what, 1 million systems isn't that hot, if it was your first year; newer items always sell well. It'll be a lot more interesting to see what the PS3 and 360 do this year, especially with more price drops probably on horizon, and hopefully a few big PS3 games coming out.

Exactly, im thinking of selling my 360 and putting the money towards a gaming rig. I can play GEOW, Mass Effect, Bioshock on somthing superior afterall.

How true..and this IS MICROSOFT we are taking about..they have sunk billions of dollars into this..I dont think they will just sit back and watch Sony beat them. On that note..360 is still outselling the PS3 so I dont know what's got the fanboys all riled up.
