PS3 has lost a total of $4.7 billion already

First the bad news: Sony's recently released FY Q2 2009 financial report included some pretty upsetting figures for investors to witness -- namely, that the company's "Networked Products and Services" division, which includes video game hardware and software sales, reported a ¥58.8 billion (or $654 million) operating loss during the quarter. The drop off was attributed to "a decrease in PS2 hardware and software unit sales, and the impact of the appreciation of the yen." Indeed, the PS2 took a hit this quarter to the tune of 600,000 units year-over year.

Now, the worse news: The financial report included enough data for various GAFers and VG247ers to slap a number on the amount of money that the PS3 has lost Sony: $4.695 billion. Sure, that number seems outrageously high -- because, well, it is -- but it's hardly an apocalyptic loss. Actually, it's reminiscent of losses incurred by Microsoft with the release of the original Xbox, which drained the company of $4.202 billion over a similar four-year period.

Finally, the good news: Shortly after the financial report was published, Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda claimed the PS3 was getting cheaper to produce, stating, "the difference between sales and materials cost has been reduced to between 10 and 20%. Within the year, it could be in the single digits." He later added, "we'll be able to reach profitability at some point in the next term." Considering PS3 sales jumped 800,000 year-over-year with the launch of the Slim, we've got a bit of advice to aid in this endeavor: Keep making it skinnier.

On the flip side, perhaps SONY should really look at what the competition is doing. Making 1st Party games is EXPENSIVE, and buying timed exclusives seems to keep the audience just as happy at only a fraction of the cost. Throw out some DLC, and boom, happy audience. It's hard to push brand new IP's, when you can just approach known sellers as well. Just a thought Sony, shut down the 1st Party devision and jump in. Sure, we won't get many games, but financially, that seems to be what consumers want.

Business is Business...Do you guys want less 1st Party games, and more Timed Exclusives/DLC?

Remember too, that there is more to SONY here, for instance BLU-RAY did win. Sure, at the price of the PS Brand somewhat, but Blu-Ray's Future is sealed.

I would love to bring up Splinter Cell : Delayed but finally here, Halo Reach, Alan Wait (5 years Dev! time, 360 exclusive, uber graphics confirmed), and NATAL.

Combined with these 2010 games and deliberately not bringing up GOW3, GT5, The Last Guardian, etc...I think we can own many fanboys with this thread. Just a thought, think about it! :)

I thought PS3 was already making money. Though I dont know where I read that. 4.7 billion is huge even more so when compared to the loss MS suffered with the first xbox. Last gen MS was a new contender in the console market so its obvious it would not be a great success, but in case of Sony who is a known and respected console makers for three gens now it is a bit shocking that they are loosing so much money.

Don't worry, how could a console coming a full year later overtake our 360? A full library of games for an entire year is impossible to overcome.

Do you know how much money is pushed for ps3!!! And selling them at a lower price aint helping!!! They should had sold them lower in the first place and they would have sold TONS more.

It refers to the whole Networked Products and Services so this could be any range of electronics from Sony. Please stop with these fanboys posts and failing attempts at trying to make it look like Sony Playstation. Yes the Playstation 3 has lost Sony money but not that much. Well, these points are obviously decent enough to get noticed and sidestepped. :lol: I get me my own personal attacks. Apparently my points stand strong, so my character is in question.

I love that it's always new posters that do these assaults too. So many have come and gone :

Anyways, you were completely wrong about your assumption about me and billions, so obviously as a new poster, you've confused me with a few other posters here.

My favorite part? I love that I'm more of a 360 fan than you 360 fans.

Whilst Solid is a bit of a Cow, he does have good posts, and rarely makes things up.
