The BBC iPlayer boasted more programme requests in December than ever before, helped along by a big jump in PlayStation 3 usage.

According to the BBC, iPlayer show requests from PlayStation 3s shot up 31 per cent month-on-month to top seven million – a healthy chunk of the 145 million total.

In comparison, Wii users posted around four million requests to the BBC's online TV and radio streaming service, despite the console's greater UK install base. That's up from around three million the month before.

Xbox 360 users, on the other hand, made zero programme requests – Microsoft is still refusing to host the service on its console. In late 2009, a BBC source told The Telegraph, "Microsoft only wants to offer its users access to platforms it can charge for as this is the model it is pursuing."

"This does not fit with the BBC's model and Microsoft will not budge at the moment. It is really frustrating for those involved on the BBC side who want to make sure iPlayer is rolled out on as many popular entertainment platforms as possible."

In November, UK Xbox chief Steve McGill told Eurogamer, "There are conversations going on. The thing for us is, how do we add some magic sauce to that so that it's different? A lot of people are watching that on their PC. How many people are going to watch it on the console unless we add something different?

"That's one of the things we talked about when Sky came out - how we could make it more intuitive, the social side of things, party mode environments... We put those together with Sky and launched our service. So you should talk to the BBC."

The top five iPlayer programme requests for December panned out as follows:

 1. Top Gear USA Road Trip: 1,294,000
 2. Top Gear Middle East Special: 1,260,000
 3. The Apprentice Series 6 Episode 12: 892,000
 4. The Apprentice Series 6 Episode 9: 849,000
 5. Come Fly With Me Episode 1: 783,000

This makes me angry at MS. iPlayer or even RTÉ Player would be great to have.

Spose 360 owners like myself are just gonna have to make do with that poxy Sky Player thats completely and utterly useless unless you have an actual sub with multi-room.

MS are silly to not allow this. BBC will not allow anyone to make iPlayer a premium, I pay a license fee - nobody should be made to pay MS more, it's simply unlawful. PS3 iPlayer is fantastic though - they lack live streaming at the moment but very quick to load and obviously excellent range of programs. Come Fly With Me is hilarious, if a little edgy :P

Its just another proof that ps3 owners don't actually buy games, which is why the ps3 is 160+ million units in software behind the 360 and Wii.

That will soon change since 360 owners won't have anything to buy :P
I'm kidding, don't go all fanboy on me
Seems more like proof that Microsoft 'charge for everything we can' policy hurts gamers more than people realise.

I have my PS3 in my bedroom with no aerial cable up there. Since iPlayer, and now 4oD/itvPlayer are on there I can watch tv up there easily, it's ******* brilliant!! BBC/Channel 4 make the only tv worth watching anyway, outside of skysports.

... er ok. What has Microsoft not allowing BBC iPlayer on the 360 have to do with the ps3 having less software units sold?

It was proposed supposedly but negotiations broke down since MS wanted it as part of their Gold, paid service, the BBC was against this as they want all BBC programming to remain free or something like that. So yeh MS refused to make it accessable to Silver users and axed the plans :(

Its simple PS3 has built in WiFi, the Wii needs a wireless adaptor. Takes less then 5min to set it up.

Are you in Ireland right? Might be worth creating a UK account and see if the icons appear, if not try doing the next firmware update under that new account and it might add it for ya :)

wii has the most games,

this is proven fact you want to know why,

because nintendo is all about games they aint all about multi media yes wii has finally got net flix and has web browser where you can watch youtube videos and store pictures on the sd card , but at the end of the day the nintendo wii is a strictly gaming console ,

if you look at game software sales, wii has the most overall not because alot of its games sell millions -90 plus did though , but because it has more games available both on retail and online download- vc and wii ware

an added advantage to the wii is gamecube backwards compatibility vs ps3 new models which only play ps1 games-and what store carrys these for new comers-pawnshops and onl ine , thats not much help , and 360 same problem only half of xboxs games are playable about a quarter of which arent really good games,

and gamestop dont carry xbox games ne more so again your stuck using pawnshops thrift and flea markets and maybe -yardsales and online

leaving no room for people to see what gaming was like before ps3 360

so ya , you can play your little movies on ps3 , who cares, i play my movies on my dvd player and my vhs players , i dont use my c onsoles for these things except bluray of course cause those things are expensive atmthe players are a waste when i do got 2 ps3s ,

so ya, like i said , if this is the best defense ps3 has -its pretty sad , cause i bought it to play games - does sony really care well gee lets see the disappointment that was granturismo 5 -no damage to nascar no caution , no bristol motor speed way michigan etc

i dont think sony does care,

and microsoft as of late has offically confirmed they want 360 to be a multimedia device,

they stopped caring about the core gamers, you say halo reach well thats one game , and so far only fable 3 and gow3 are out / coming , ive been waiting for saints row 3 and driver 5 but nooo they keep delaying the 2 ,

so i dont knowi like 360 and ps3 as much as i do wii but when it comes to games no one seams to do anything but nintendo , nintendo invents , ,sony just comes around and follows-its proven fact

such as

---four controller ports out of the box or able to use 4 controllers at one time-n64 and dreamcast did it then xbox , finally ps did it with ps3 but hardly ne game uses them

- analog joystick - nintendo 64 came out in 96 with them standard , playstion had a controller that had no sticks at first after n64 had the rumble pack thats when ps had the dual shock

- motion control gaming-- even before the nintendo wii the nes had it-r.o.b though hardly used , it is now standard- thanks to another nintendo system that we all know-wii

move then actually copied it only using cam technology , vs inferad-and its got a limit of 2 players vs 4 wii

online sony took from segas/microsofts book --dc had dial u p only but xbox had both, and xbox really pushed the console online scene , to where it is to day

all sony has done is push for bigger discs /mediums

so at the end of the day you can take sony and take them some where where they belong cause they dont belong making games , they cant make their own games in fact they rely on naughty dog factor 5 etc

nintendo and microsoft how ever -made at least one or more games

The Wii has had built in wireless since it launched :|. I didn't touch the BBC iPlayer on the Wii though, why would I watch SD BBC when I have SkyHD? that may be effecting the numbers, people will choose a higher resolution picture if possible (and BBC1 does look good in HD).
