PS3 is the N64 of this generation... it's nearly an exact fit

PS2 and Super Nintendo both reigned supreme in their respective era and they were followed up by less popular consoles that were focussed on power, had fewer games, lost marketshare and third party support, and pissed off the gaming/development community at large... I speak of the N64 and PS3... though PS3 looks to have stronger 3rd party support than the N64 at this point, we can only hope it has the same level of first party software (Lair is looking hot for the PS3 but OOT, PD, 007, Mario 64 anyone?)

For innovation and sentimental reasons... I liked the N64 a hell of alot better so far, it had some of the best games ever, just not many of them... but the impact both of these consoles had on their brandname is going to be similar.... N64 left a huge dent in Nintendo's marketshare and third party support just as the PS3 will do to Sony.

ok, your point? the N64 was very close to the PS1, and basiclly all of their games were enjoyable. if the 64 had used CDs instead of cartriages (they had the tech inferior console, so i don't know why your calling it focused on power) then the PS1 wouldn't have even been created. the PS1 was the remnants of what the 64 was going to be. and i haven't met anyone who was pissed off at the 64, it was great. if the PS3 is the 64 of this generation, then that means it's barely beat out by another system...not that it fails or is tech inferior

Nintendo does things their way and Sony does things their own way. N64 is not the same as the PS3. Although it's not necessarily bad for a console to be like the N64, I'm just not seeing it. PS3 is more like the PS1. This is also made true by the fact they both had pretty lackluster launches. In that a lot of people were doubting / hating on it at first, but eventually came to see the light. Which I believe we're just entering the "seen the light" phase. This phase will be concluded by the end of 2008, and the PS3 domination phase will begin.

He was only comparing them. And yes, the N64 had some huge games. Also, Wii and 360 are turning out to be the PS1s that killed the N64. Let me finish this by replying to the "who made the ps1 again?" remark you made. Nintendo made great systems, does that mean they're always good? No. No it doesn't.

N64 was lightyears ahead of the PS1 in terms of graphical power, true 64 bit while the PS1 was a tame 32 bit console. Nintendo's inclusion of a cartridge format angered consumers as does Sony's inclusion of Bluray.

btw PS1 outsold N64 by over 50 million units.

How can you compare the N64 to the PS3. The N64 was innovative with the analog control stick and rumble, not to mention it had a slew of great games, sales may not have been fantastic but the games sure as hell were. The PS3 has so far this year 5 games that I really want that have been announced, plus 2 more that are pending release and at least they arent all shooters.

Comparing FPS games to a tactical stealth shooter is rediculous. Metal Gear has always been an amazing franchise, and Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were two of the best console FPS's ever made however you can not compare them to Metal Gear by any means.

Too bad 75% of PS1 games were abysmal flops. Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Crash Bandicoot and a few others were the only really good games for the console, I should know. I mean jesus how many times did Sony have to rehash Cool Boarders to try and compete with 1080 Snowboarding, which is still the best snowboarding series of all time. Sheesh there were like 7 installments of Cool Boarders on the PS1 and each one kept getting lower scores. At least Rare put out some of the best franchises of all time, which Microsoft wound up ruining like Perfect Dark and Conker. Anyone who says the N64 had bad games is a moron.

All first party.

Face it,N64 had sh1tty 3rd party support compared to PS1.

Anyone who says the N64 had bad games is a moron.

no one says it has bad games, but not enough good ones

ROFL! Perfect Dark, Mario 64, Goldeneye, Ocarina, Mario Kart 64 and many others all disagree.

All first party.

[QUOTE="DSgamer64"]How can you compare the N64 to the PS3. The N64 was innovative with the analog control stick and rumble, not to mention it had a slew of great games, sales may not have been fantastic but the games sure as hell were. The PS3 has so far this year 5 games that I really want that have been announced, plus 2 more that are pending release and at least they arent all shooters.jedigemini
For innovation and sentimental reasons... I liked the N64 a hell of alot better to, it had some of the best games ever, just not many of them... but the impact both of these consoles had on their brandname is going to be similar.... N64 left a huge dent in Nintendo's marketshare and third party support just as the PS3 will do to Sony.

Well to some extent thats true, Nintendo alienated developers and didnt stick with the trend of making CD based consoles, which hurt the N64 a lot. They werent willing to take a small loss to make a console that could have wound up with all the 3rd party support and being the lone ranger in the gaming business and they would have made tons of money off it. Sony has only hurt themselves with the complex gaming hardware.

Actually 64 failed becaue of lack of games and variation and the use of cartridges. If N64 used CD's there would be no PS1. FFXIII is PS3's biggest game but N64 had way bigger games than MGS4.
