While gamers will have had no problems getting hold of a PlayStation 3 over the console's European launch weekend, it is a different story for those searching to buy a Nintendo Wii.
The Wii was launched in Europe on December 8, with Nintendo promising in a statement that it would "maximise all resources for a repaid replenishment program to consistently pump Wii consoles into the supply pipeline." Right now, in both the US and the UK, however, it seems consumers have to move quickly to find one.
The only outlets where customers could get easily hold of a Wii seemed to be auction Web site eBay, where the console is currently selling at an average price of £200 (RRP £179), and the Amazon Marketplace. Retailers--including GameStation, Play.com, Amazon UK, and Game--were all out of stock at the time of going to press, according to online stock-checking sites.
A Nintendo spokesperson told GameSpot that the company has indeed been making regular shipments of the console since its launch, although he declined to give figures. He said, "It is still very much the case that regular shipments of Wii are being made to retailers across the UK and have been since launch. It's simply a fact that demand remains incredibly high for Wii with some retailers reporting higher interest now than at launch. Every unit we make right now is selling."
He urged those wishing to buy a Wii to "not give up" and to try using sites such as Yahoo! which have search functions to check stock levels at a variety of stores.
Why do people get it wrong. There are two parts to the equation. Demand and SUPPLY. Just because you see consoles available at stores doesnt mean the demand is slow, it could very much mean the SUPPLY is just that far ahead. They shipped 1 million to Europe, that is more then any other console on launch day and your suprised to see some in the stores. I go to the supermaket and see milk there, I guess nobody drinks milk anymore.Demand for the Wii higher in the UK and its been out there for 5 months... PS3 just launched and the demand isnt there.

My comment was not geared toward the Wiis demand but the myth that the PS3 has no demand because you can purchase one in Europe easily. The Wiis success doesnt affect the PS3/360s success, it is a very different console that has very different games and appeals to a different crowd. The Wii can sell tons but that will not pull games from the 360/PS3. Its a great system but I have no interest in party games or mini games so its not form me.Demand for the Wii higher in the UK and its been out there for 5 months... Whilst differing numbers of supply might account for a difference, I would suggest that the Wii is more popular than the PS3.
We get numerous phone calls and visits asking about the Wii, but interest in the PS3 was pretty low. Example. A guy traded in his Wii for the PS3 the other day. Plus point for the PS3 you might think. However, a guy spotted the Wii from across the store, and came across to wait in line to buy the Wii once it had been traded in. And this was without Wii Sports, which the guy trading it in forgot to bring in. It's going to be posted to us, and then the guy who bought it, but that could take a week or more, and it didn't even make him think about it.
We sell a minimum of 9 Wii's a week. If we get more sent to us, obviously we sell more. We have about 30 PS3's sitting on the shelf. Yesterday we sold 2.
[QUOTE="Ontain"]wii has this gen wrapped up. regardless of what elitist gamers have to say.martin_fWii isnt in this Gen. How does getting a Gamecube and sticking a new motion controller on it make it next gen? They disguised it, by releasing it between the 360 and PS3. :o

Because it was released with this gen. It's not a Gamecube, and no constant repeating of that will make it true. Â
That sucks for people who can't find one. In my area, I could walk into a handful of stores within 15 minutes of my house that have plenty of Wiis, DSs, Wii-motes, and anything else Nintendo-related that you could want. My area gets stocked very well, for some reason.

Another Wii sales thread? Games>>>>>>>sales.shsonlineSales lead to games, no matter how you argue it
Another Wii sales thread? Games>>>>>>>sales.shsonlineI think it's more of the "Told you so" syndrome when many doubted an event occuring. In this instance the Wii. It's really all about the games. But when one can't actually obtain one by conventional methods and at standard retail price, not to mention how long the sell outs have been going on, well... It should be a cause for concern.
As a nation of drunks the Wii will naturally sell better. What can be more fun than playing wii sports wankered out your f'in head? I'm getting one as soon as somewhere has them in stock.
 Mmmm sweet generalizations.

Thing is, when the sale numbers are produced it will show you the demand for a product. If the Wii is continuously selling out and selling more than the other two then that should be an open/shut case. You cannot justify the PS3's availability by saying there is overwhelming supply. All this means is that there are not even a million people who are overly enthusiastic about getting a PS3.
I thought that 5 million would buy it on day one, no matter what it was, even if it didn't have any games.Â
