According to IGN the PS3 is sold for less than it's production cost. Is this really a wise move?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Typically, when a new console is released, the company loses money for the first few years or so (production cost etc).
Really? I wasn't aware of that, although the xbox wasn't as sucessful as the ps2. Did nintendo lose money making the inexpensive wii too o.0teh_VU
If they did lose any, it was quickly evaporated by the immense profits they are now making.
I thought Sony is actually gaining money from every PS3 sold now?ovechkin08
Me too! I thought MGS4 would really boost its sales. Do you think the PS3 would drop its price tag anytime in the next 2-3 years? I know they're not making money now but I'm considering buying a PS3 because I love the MGS series and other PS3 exlusive games (I was previously a PS2 owner xD), although I'm not sure I wanna drop $400-500.
Meh. I made a thread about this about 3 days ago.
And trust me, if they wernt selling it so low the profits would be less, so it is a wise buisness move.
The PS3 project has hurt Sony quite a bit. Someone posted a theoretical layout of revenue/expenditures and said if the revenue of the PS3 by the end of summer 2009 doesn't change, the PS3 will need an attach rate of roughly 12 to turn any profit as while as nearly double it's current library for libraries.
This is a very lofty claim, however. Sony is absolutely notorious for abandoning projects that don't turn money simply because they don't have the money to chuck away like Microsoft does who paid a huge amount to crack into the console market that was widely dominated by Sony.
this isn't old if it it is not by that much. anywho, yeah I dont know what Sony's gonna do. sounds like they'll be bleeding out their cash until sometime near the next gen (the one after the wii 360 and ps3) for them to instantaneously drop the PS3 like that hot tortellini you half finished on the thanksgiving of 1992 that you just found last week and almost finished eating it before you noticed there was a decaying rat carcass lying on it and then you yelled "HOLY-" and drop it like Sony will with the PS3.
seriously I miss the ps2 so much, I really REALLY wish that Sony would go back to the PS2's roots for when they make the PS4.

Sorry, I don't think I understood a single word you said in the first paragraph but I too miss the PS2. It was like the only console I needed (except the GC for melee and the PC for shooters). I still kind of find it hard to believe that the creator of the goliath PS2 created a system that may flop =(
sony failed you say?
This news is ancient. We already know that Sony ar eunlikely to make a profit this gen.
You should know beter that to post this in system wars! Don't you know yet? http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26449128

No, Nintendo went cheap on us and started selling with a profit. I wanted to see Zelda in HD.
Guess I have to wait for next gen.
come on now...sony is a old player by now and they know how to play this game....if they are loosing soo much $$ then why are they still supporting it????sure they might be loosing $$ now but they are looking at the future....and we all know that the future is brightiqballoThe only reason they have tried to support it ....BLU-RAY! This is what they care about most.

Nintendo's has always sold their consoles at a profit. You have to remember that they aren't nearly as big as Microsoft or Sony. It's not as easy for them to shrug of these kind of losses.[QUOTE="VanHelsingBoA64"][QUOTE="ChrnoTrigger"]Old. mistervengeance

Wasn't the Gamecube really cheap too?

Yes it was.
The GCN launched for over a hundred less than the PS2, yeah. Though several factors let them keep the hardware competitive last gen (eg. waiting for the cost of the hardware to come down, not included DVD playback, smaller price difference to begin with, etc).
old as hellff7isnumbaone
News to me. I thought they were profiting these days, but apparently they are not.

ok so you rather have a very very crappy on-line console. the ps 3 is like the ps 2 only smarter. really how can a system live up to last gen in a year and half. really we need time to give sony first party to make ps 3 games. weres team ico ect. the ps 2 did start as slow as well. only when mgs 2 came out the system jumped in sales. the ps 3 already beat the ps 2 in sales in its sametime period ect. the ps 2 would have been just as expensive as the ps 3 if the dvd just started coming out like blu-ray. dvd was out like 2 years before the ps 2 so it was cheaper in the beginning.last gen we hated the fact how bad the ps 2 was made now sony made sure that did not happen again and gave ps 3 quality parts for a reliable system now we complain it is not like the ps 2 man sony can't win.
not even close they are making a profit for the 360 put have not made up the money for rrod (3 billion) alone not even the billion around launch to the 360. microsoft still has not made a dime in the gaming industry for the last 2 gens.not old
the PS3 brand is STILL bleeding money and may not have a net profit by the time this generation is over while the 360 is already making profits
and unlike MS, Sony cant really sit back and eat loses
audioaxes
sony already made huge profits for the ps 2 and psp.
Sony deserves this for their elitist attitude toward their PS2 fanbase back in 2005-2006. They produced an overpriced system with a high price tag, no worthy System-Sellers, and tried to sell it off the PlayStation name to expect people to flock to it. Didn't happen, and even 19 months Sony still doesn't have it together.FrexieI'm sick of hearing this, M$ has this attitude when it comes to their operating system. Nintendo had this attitude when they went ahead with the 64. They all do it, get over it.
