Folding@Home on the PS3

INTRODUCTION

Since 2000, Folding@Home (FAH) has led to a major jump in the capabilities of molecular simulation. By joining together hundreds of thousands of PCs throughout the world, calculations which were previously considered impossible have now become routine. FAH has targeted the study of of protein folding and protein folding disease, and numerous scientific advances have come from the project.

Now in 2006, we are looking forward to another major advance in capabilities. This advance utilizes the new Cell processor in Sony's PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) to achieve performance previously only possible on supercomputers. With this new technology (as well as new advances with GPUs), we will likely be able to attain performance on the 20 gigaflop scale per computer. With about 50,000 such machines, we would be able to achieve performance on the petaflop scale. With software from Sony, the PlayStation 3 will now be able to contribute to the Folding@Home project, pushing Folding@Home a major step forward.

Our goal is to apply this new technology to push Folding@Home into a new level of capabilities, applying our simulations to further study of protein folding and related diseases, including Alzheimer's Disease, Huntington's Disease, and certain forms of cancer. With these computational advances, coupled with new simulation methodologies to harness the new techniques, we will be able to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, and make even greater impacts on our knowledge of folding and folding related diseases.

So it's a great molecular simulator... but how much fun is it to do that with a controller?

Probably as much as any other game on the PS3. What game stands out on the platform that has actually been released worldwide?

Xbox was more powerful than the PS2 and it still lost.

it seems to only be talking about the cell and fighting diseases, so i dont know how that makes it the most powerful gaming console :?

are consoles not for playing games anymore? if i wanted to help cure diseases i'd give money to charity.

The PS3 is so powerful that it also has a cloaking device when it sits on the shelf. Store owners are puzzled why the units have not sold like other rival consoles such as the Wii and 360.

Store owners say they have a huge surplus of games for these elusive units. Titles like Lair, Motorstorm, and Heavenly Sword sit idle on shelves..

Sony blames this intelligent system on teh CELL processor. Not only does this unit play Blue Ray movies.. It also can be used as a blender, answering machine, and kitty litter box.

Store owners are concerned that teh CELL is becoming to intelligent. Even Santa Claus fears the PS3. He once said he heard it trying to also read him instructions much like a next generation GPS unit.

If Sony can ever get people to buy these units perhaps people will think of ways to use them as a flux compacitor and invent Time travel in the average Volkswagen Bug.

Other recent reports for the PS3 capabilities claim it has been used as a BigFoot Tracker. Scientists claim teh Cell processor can communicate with these mythical creatures..

One was spotted in a residential area doing what appeared to be laughing at the PS3 sitting in someones window. It sat for atleast 20 minutes captivated by the black machine.

Other reports have also come in saying the Cell was Alien technology. This is the main reason why the government was very upset at the launching of the PS3. The US Government is said to have a special agency to keep the PS3 from becoming to widespread. Teh Cell processor technology is to valuable to them at the moment to let it fall into the average household.

People claim the Government uses them as mine field detectors on US tanks as well as psychological deterrents.

Many people say we won't fully realize how powerful the Cell is until the year 2025 when developers finally figure out how to use them to their fullest capabilities. Perhaps scientists say they can reach in time and bring back signals trapped in space of the Flintstones reruns..

Only Time will tell :D

Because Devs are new to the Cell, and are pretty my masters when it comes to developing on 360.

Imagine 360 is coded in english and Ps3 is coded in french.

EA has been doing english years now, while french is new to them.

so the games reflect this.

Of course the PS3 is good at folding. It's massively parallel single precision floating point math, and I doubt there's a lot of locking contention. That's pretty much all the thing was built to do. A better question is, what percentage of the average game is made up of parallel floating point math? (We'll accept that single precision is very common in games - double precision is probably overkill.)

Better question - do you actually understand any of what I just said? Because if you don't, then you probably shouldn't be expressing an opinion on this topic.

Yes I have found the PS3 to be in abundance on store shelves. I watched people Ooo and ahh at what I thought was the PS3.. Then I looked closer and saw they were actually looking at the 360 playing the Halo 3 demo that sat right next to it.

Todays recent rumor says the PS3 will serve as a insect repellent. Some exterminators like Terminex and Orkin have found these units scare the bejesus out of insects. Sony plans on capitalizing on this unseen break through. It has already got its Holiday banners which read much like a Visine slogan.

PS3.. It gets the BUGS OUT :D

Only time will tell if Sony can make use of these new revelations!!

you act like you didn't know that the 360 is way more simple to develop for, with better dev kits (well, MS is a software company afterall) and a hardware structure devs have always worked with. Also, the system has been on the market for quite some time.

PS3 on the other side, has a much more complicated CPU, worse dev kits (Sony is a hardware company afterall) and has been in the market for less than half the time the 360 has been...

that sums it up.

Too bad this hasn't affected the games, and the split RAM is causing PS3 games to be less technically impressive than 360 games.zeldarooles

please learn your facts and stop spreading lies. The Split ram in the PS3 is an Advantage. Cpu has its own Ram, GPu has its own 256 but it can also use the other Ram the CPU is using.

The 512 mig ram the Xbox 360 is using it being shared by both CPU and GPU, this causes a bottleneck :)

the 512 Mig in the Xbox 360 is clocked at 700 MHZ.

The ram the ps3 has:

256 Clocked at 3.2 Gig

256 Clocked at 700 MHZ

256 + 256 = 512 Mig just like xboxs ram, but the Ps3s ram is 3 times faster :D
