So my 360 died on me. I'm no longer under warranty so I will be purchasing a console again. Mind you this is my 3rd 360 but now I'm considering moving on.

1 was stolen
1 red ringed
1 stopped reading disks (current)

Can someone tell me the advantages the PS3 holds over the 360?

Is the game installation thing annoying (I've heard a lot of games have to go through this install process and hours of patching before you can play them - I play on consoles to mostly avoid that)?

I really like the Halo franchise. Is there a franchise on the PS3 that can compare (in as far as just being a fun shooter with a great community)?

Are used PS3 games easily attainable and are they reasonably priced? Very rarely do I buy a game on release, I usually wait a while until it goes on sale or can find it used for cheap. This is important.

How is the online on the PS3? XBL is great in letting you know when your friends are online, offering demos, things of that nature. Does the PSN compare?

Do a lot of PS3 games offer split-screen multiplayer or online co-op? I play with my son a lot so this is important for me. One of my favorite things about Halo is that you can play it online-split screen with "guest" accounts. Can you do this with Resistance or any of the other big shooters for the PS3?

Can I get Netflix and Hulu on there? Though I have other devices that can do this, being on my console is a huge convenience.

Thanks for your help.

Well, depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a good online experience, 360 is definitely the way to go, but the PS3 has a better exclusive library.

Hmm good point. I should point out that I don't care much for single-player games. I'm all about multiplayer, either competitive online, coop, or split-screen. I've heard that Drake 2 is an amazing single player experience though, which has me intrigued, but generally speaking, I'm all about the multiplayer.

Well, then, the 360 is DEFINITELY the console to buy, in your case. You may have to pay for it and all, but it offers a erfect online service in return. PSN may be free, but it's glitchy, goes down a lot, and doesn't have a very good community.

The online for the psn is no different than Live...oh wait, it's free so yes it is different. All of the multiplats on the 360 run just as well on ps3, and the ps3 has a larger and more diverse exclusives library than the 360. Netflix, Hulu, it's all on there. Game install times? I haven't had one of those for years. Pretty much, ps3 is better in all regards compared to the 360. Better games, better hardware, better online. Hope that helps.

Most games on PS3 have a multiplayer component including Drake 2. The PS3 also has some multiplayer gems like Warhawk and the coming Starhawk I suggest you look into those and you would have hours of fun with them. Even though the online aspect is more developed in the 360 the PS3 is not bad at all like many people like you to believe. It even has more games with dedicated servers than the 360. The installation issues are also exagerated by fanboys, for some games you have to install once for like 5 minutes in your lifetime and that's it and for many more you don't even have to install. Also the console is much more reliable and Sony invests more in first party and games than Microsoft so I say go for the PS3.

PSN goes down all the time, and it has got a ton of hackers and cheaters. It's got a bad community, and a bad interface. XBL costs for a reason- it's awesome. And multiplats are better on the 360, it's a KNOWN FACT. The only multiplat this year that was better on the PS3 was Dragon Age 2 and Crysis 2. Bulletstorm has equal scores on both system.s Other than that, EACH AND EVERY MULTIPLAT WAS BETTER ON THE 360. PS: I'm talking about Metascores.

Yeah that's pretty much all untrue. For most people online isn't going to be any different on PS3 than 360. Each has a few features the other doesn't have but online play is the same.

This is simply not true. I use PSN all the time and it never goes down. The recent issue was a major problem but before that the network is pretty consistent. And most games are not filled with hackers and cheaters, I play several games online and I have never had a problem with hackers or cheaters.

If you already have games get a 360. If you don't get a PS3. Going from 360 to PS3 is usually a very short honeymoon though.

ok here we go. if all you like is HALO, then get another 360. XBL is a lot better than PSN and im sure you already know that and dont need anyone to convince you otherwise. However, if youre interested in playing a lot of different games, then get a ps3. 360 is on its last legs, its call of duty and hulk hogan kinect. after Gears 3, theres nothing. yeah theres multiplats but you can play those on ps3 and get all the exclusives.

Dear TC, SW isn't a great place to ask this question cos you get answers that are rather slanted like this.

it HONESTLY depends on what you like...both are good choices...360 has the best online. PS3 has the best SP. 360 has the bigger library and PS3 has a stronger library....idk what games you like?

Lookat the games list of each system and choose the one that has more games that interest you. That is one of the reasons I chose a PS3.

I would say the 360slim, its a great console and the online service is alsogreat, if you have many friends or at least friends that you know good and often pretty much speak to them then use the 360 for party chat.

Well Halo isn't "all that I like" but I think it's the only 360 exclusive I really care about (not a huge GOW fan). You made a good point though, there's not much exclusive on the 360 horizon at all. All of the upcoming games I'm most excited about are multi-platform (Battlefield 3, MW 3). That's actually a very big point you just brought up. Gonna have to look up the official list of upcoming exclusives for both to see which looks better.

Is the game installation thing annoying (I've heard a lot of games have to go through this install process and hours of patching before you can play them - I play on consoles to mostly avoid that)? Updates and installing can get annoying. The only issue I had with it is when you buy a new game sometimes it can take 15-20 mins before you can play it. Also I had an online update take like 2 hours one time. It's not a huge deal.

I really like the Halo franchise. Is there a franchise on the PS3 that can compare (in as far as just being a fun shooter with a great community)? No. The online community on PS3 isn't as good as 360. Way more people without mics and there is no Halo. People will tell you Killzone (which KZ2 was an awesome game) but no PS3 game has the online customization and game modes that Halo does.

Are used PS3 games easily attainable and are they reasonably priced? Very rarely do I buy a game on release, I usually wait a while until it goes on sale or can find it used for cheap. This is important. You can find cheaper games. I do find a lot of games you can get cheaper on 360. For some reason sales sometimes are 360 only. Still cheap games for PS3 are out there.

How is the online on the PS3? XBL is great in letting you know when your friends are online, offering demos, things of that nature. Does the PSN compare? If you played on origanal Xbox thats how PSN is. Cross game chat, party chat, voice messages, etc aren't on PSN. It is OK for online gaming, but its not XBL.

I am not sure on this one sorry.

Can I get Netflix and Hulu on there? Though I have other devices that can do this, being on my console is a huge convenience. Netflix for sure, I think Hulu too but not sure.

This is going to be a tough decision. I'm going to have to wait until E3 to see what kind of announcements MS has going forward. The lack of upcoming exclusives is a huge deal and if all they ramble about is more Kinnect stuff (which I don't care for at all), it's not going to look good. I do love XBL though, and Halo so tearing away from that is going to be tough. Thank you all for the replies.

i don't think it will get any better as far as exclusives go.

a launch lineup for a new console will take a few years to put together and the 360 is going on being a 6 year old console.

i just don't think they are going to invest in lots of exclusives for it with next gen right around the corner.

we are seeing the 360 run out of steam because mcrosoft won't announce next gen games and kill off the last few 360 sales they are going to get.

You should get a PS3 if:

1. You have $299

2. You need a Blu-Ray player and also want a gaming system

3. Don't want to pay for online gaming

4. Are interested in the exclusive lineup (if the PS2 1st party exclusives interested you, the PS3's will as well)

You should get a 360 if:

1. Your friends and family only own 360's and you wanna play online games with them

2. Only have $199 and have no need for a hard drive

3. Kinect and "Gears of War" interest you

4. Don't mind paying for online

I'd recommend buying the PS3 since it is a better value and I'm guessing that it will at the end of this year have at least 3 more exclusive games rated 8.5 or above. Also the PS3 is a much better value as it can use inexpensive laptop hard drives, rechargable controller batteries, and I also find that the PS3 is much quieter than the 360 when kept in a (technically) closed space

PS3 games

360 games

You're much better off just researching the games found on those lists than you are watching a pissing match between PS3 and 360 fanboys stating a bunch of biased opinions. You're not going to find anything productive or useful from 99% of the responses here, just fanboy fodder. Do the research yourself and pick which system has the most games that you want.

The online performance for PS3 and 360 while in games is equivalent. The Xbox 360 has cross game voice chat and a party system which is absent on the PSN, so if those 2 features are very important to you, you should take that into consideration, but those are the only differences in the services.

Nah. PSN stores has substantially more content. Much more organized. Entire PS3 os isn't saturated with ads. PSN rarely lags, not many maintenance downtime, except for recently with the hack, obviously, where with Live it's always being worked on. PSN you get more for less.

Game installation is annoying, but installation only take like a few minutes, and updates only take a few minutes also.

There really isn't any other games like Halo, the closest thing on PS3 is Resistance, which is actually a pretty good series, and the 3rd is coming out this year.

Used PS3 games are typically the same price or slightly more expensive. Luckily, the discs are pretty much unscratchable, so you never have to worry about getting a messed up game, and you're games will last a long time.

Online play is just as good as XBL, and PS Store also offers demos. XBLA and PSN both offer the same demos most of the time. It always tells you when a friend is online and if you wanna check you can go to the XMB in game.

There are plenty of games offering split-screen (maybe not enough), and Online co-op is in most games. But split-screen multiplayer is a rarity.

PS has both HULU and Netflix, and you don't have to pay for premium service to use netflix, just pay your 8 or 9 a month and your set

Go buy a PS3 if all you have owned so far is a 360, sure dosen't hurt to try something else for a change. Some people in this thread are talking pure crap about the 360 though thats for dam sure! From a person that owns both systems, you will notice the differences between PSN and XBL and it will become quite obvious, I'm not saying that PSN is bad.. it's just not comparable to XBL like some people here are saying.

[QUOTE="khoofia_pika"][QUOTE="kuraimen"] Yeah that's pretty much all untrue. For most people online isn't going to be any different on PS3 than 360. Each has a few features the other doesn't have but online play is the same. TheMoreYouOwn

I'veused PSN quite a lot, and it goes down a lot. It goes down for maintenance very frequently, and it has a lot of lag issues. Plus, XBLA offers more content that PS Store.

Nah. PSN stores has substantially more content. Much more organized. Entire PS3 os isn't saturated with ads. PSN rarely lags, not many maintenance downtime, except for recently with the hack, obviously, where with Live it's always being worked on. PSN you get more for less.

Don't you ever stop spreading fud? You don't even own a dam 360!

The only advantage the PS3 has over the 360 is free online. Unfortunately, it isn't exactly working properly right now. Do you like the games on the 360? If so, buy a 360. Do you like the games on the PS3? If so, buy a PS3. It should always be about the games, and not just the exclusives.

I think a lot of it has to do with a simple question. Which one do more of your friends have? I know its stupid, but I find myself playing the 360 2x as much because I have 2x the friends on it. I don't favor one over the other as far as gameplay goes.
