First of all... I'm a hardcore gamer but have mostly stuck to just the PC up until now. I now travel alot and don't find it practical to lug around a full blown PC gaming rig; for one thing I would hate to have an expensive PC rig stolen.

Therefore, I have recently been taken a long hard look at what console to buy. I don't know much about consoles, but here is what I do know so we will not waste your valuable time and advice that I desperately want and need.

I know that there is more games currently available for the Xbox 360 than the PS3, however this doesn't sway me too bad as surely this will balance out in time.

I know that the PS3 is overpriced, however I make good money so that is not going to sway me either.

Other than that, to be honest I don't know a whole lot.

Here is what I want advice on the most, which gaming console will appeal to my gaming tastes? Here is what interests me the most with the first being tops with me, and then getting less each time:

1. RPG's
2. FPS
3. Adventures
4. Fighting (includes boxing even though that is a sport)

Other than boxing, I don't play sports. Does anyone know if one console will have more titles that will appeal to me, or is this something that will be hard to predict. I love (translate "I devour, dream of, drool over, lust for" ) RPGs and hope to make the right choice.

If there are other consumer considerations to consider (i.e. like ease of use, features or some such) that would help me choice the XBOX or the PS3, I would appreciate the help and advice.

Any logical sounding advice that don't involve divination, prophetic utterances, or a weegie board, will be very seriously considered. Thanks in advance, my money awaits to make this purchase.

Here are the top scores so far on both systems. I didn't include below 8.4, because there were too many 8.3s.

Gamespot Scores

XBOX 360

Gears of War -- 9.6
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion -- 9.6
GRAW -- 9.2
Rainbow Six Vegas -- 9.1
Perfect Dark Zero -- 9.0
Guitar Hero II -- 8.9
Call of Duty 3 -- 8.8
Burnout Revenge -- 8.8
Dead or Alive -- 8.8
Project Gotham Racing 3 -- 8.8
Call of Duty 2 -- 8.8
Command & Conquer 3 -- 8.7
GRAW 2 -- 8.7
Kameo -- 8.7
Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles -- 8.6
F.E.A.R -- 8.6
Splinter Cell: Double Agent -- 8.5
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night -- 8.5
Alien Hominid HD -- 8.5
Rockstar Games Table Tennis -- 8.5
Need for Speed: Most Wanted -- 8.4
Virtua Tennis 3 -- 8.4
Dead Rising -- 8.4

PS3

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion -- 9.5
Resistance: Fall of Man -- 8.6

So, it's clear Sony is off to a weak start. Will they catch up? And how soon? Don't know.

Get a PS3 if you're interested in GT5, MGSIV, GTAIV, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, God of War III, Haze, White Knight Story, and FFXIII.

Get a 360 if you're interested in Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, GTAIV, Gears of War, Banjo Threeie, Forza 2, Alan Wake, and Lost Odyssey.

My choice is the PS3 but that's because I'm GTA/GT/MGS/FF obsessed.

You like rpgs and shooters?

360 = win.  Also, this may not be a big deal, but the ps3 probly weighs aroud the same as your pc.

If you have a PC there's no reason to get an Xbox 360 unless you are dying to play Halo, Mass Effect or GEOW.

PC and PS3 is the perfect mix of western and eastern gaming IMO.

If you still have time to play games on PC, the choice is easy, PS3. If not, then get 360 if you're big in to shooters and Western RPGs.

As far as RPGs go, a lot of people will be comparing whatever Sony comes out with (Final Fantasy) to this for the 360:

Maybe, but imo you can't really compare JRPGs and WRPGs.

Well In my opionion you cant go wrong with either one.

You might however want to go with the PS3 even though it is more expensive it can do a lot more Sony wasnt lying when they called it a super computer as I am sure you know you can run Linux and any other OS system on it. YDL is the prefered one. Now from there you can add all of your fav PC games from there. Now I have heard that you could play PC games on the PS3 once you have the other OS but it is really kina difficult to get it running on the PS3. The Ps3 has so many other capabilities as well, like being a Blu-Ray,CD,DVD,MP3,MP4,AVI ( through VLC0, ect.. It Plays PS1, PS2, PS3 games, and with the new firmware you can upscale the games and DVDs. It rips CD, DVDs, and can charge an Ipod or PSP. It has free internet not quite as good as MS Xbox Live, but its free and built in Wifi, much like the Wii. The PS3 games are sparce and not too many good ones, but it will change shortly. Devs are starting to get a feel for the Cell and Blu-Ray ect.. Games will be comming out. Heavenly Sword is one of the games I am looking foreward to most that is comming out soon. MGS4, Killzone 2, GOD of War 3 , Lair, Uncharted, The new Ratchet and Clank, Dynasty Warriors 6 and so many others. The PS3 is a great system and will probably last you the longest of all the consoles. I think the PS3 could have a 10 year lifespan. The controller is light and confortable, recharchable battery

The 360 is also a great buy. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that it has a tendency to break down more than the other consoles. The 360 dashboard layout is really cool I like it better than the PS3's which is like the PSP's, but the 360 I feel is organized a bit better. The game library is great, GeoW is one of the best looking console games ever, Its a short but fun game cutting up people with a chainsaw ect.. The game library is big and will expand, most of its games are shooters, and some are on the PC already, It is also a multimedia device it doesnt do as much as the PS3 but it does enough. No Wifi built inside you must buy that seprate it does have an ethernet cable though. You can connect to Media Center and wach, listen and view, things on your 360. The contrller is very nice you will adjust to it nicely and it works great for FPS. the 360 has many great FPS and Halo 3 will be absolutly amazing.

Personally I recomend both you will be happy with either one. I dont own any next gen system yet,. I know a couple of people with a Wii and a few with a 360, and my friend about an hour away has a PS3 so have all seen each console, and they can only improve upon its greatness. I feel for me though the PS3 is the system for me

FPS  360 will have more fps and perhaps a bit better fps than the PS3 but PS3 will have some great ones Resitance is great but i think the Halo 3 will beat it

RPG PS3 hands down- FF13, new Disgaea, ect..

Adventure- probably tied but I think the PS3 will beat it again New Naughty Dog game Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, heavenly sword, and quite a few others. 360 has a few as well but when you think of the 360 FPS come to mind

Fighting personally I will say the PS3 the controller I feel is much better for fighting games. Guilty Gear, Tekken, Soul Calibur, and Virtua Fighter are all going to be on the PS3 at some point

I currently own the 360 and wii,i recently sold my ps3 due to the lack of games. Its just too much money for something i wasnt using, luckily i got most of my money back.Personally out of the 3 i would go with the 360,unless u are a die hard fan of metal gear or final fantasy, which those games may come over to the 360 who knows. The 360 already has a ton of games out,its cheaper than the ps3 and xbox live is the bomb.Among the great games that are out for the 360 and coming out are gears of war, ghost recon advanced warfighter 1 and 2,rainbow 6 vegas, mass effect, bioshock, splinter cell double agent,halo3,eternal sonet, forza, pgr, fight night round 3,crackdown,lost planet, dead rising, grand theft auto, i could go on and on but im gonna stop there. The ps3 could have good games coming out in the future and could turn things around but if your wanting a good console right now id recommend the 360.

Considering you can get cases smaller than a PS3 I'd recommend going with a 360 if you're going for portability. They have great bags that are easy to lug around. Either that or opt for a laptop.

I could add alot of amazing games to that list but I will just say those three games are about as good a reason to get a console as any.

The 360 is smaller, less likely to get stolen, has a larger number of games in the genres you like, costs less, supports vga and headphones easily (for taking a small LCD on the go) and is generally a better choice, especially is you're used to PC gaming.

The 360 is the kind of system you buy along with a 19" widescreen and a pair of decent headphones, and you can take it anywhere - much easier than lugging a full tower around... toss it in a targus bag along with Mass Effect, Dead or Alive 4, and Bioshock (when they come out) and it sounds like your needs would be met...

Wow... I knew we had a great community on the forums here at Gamespot, but this level of advice and input was more than I expected.  You guys all rock and all the advice is very very well received. One big thank you for all that each of you had to say and it really has helped.

Thanks for the game and console suggestions and some of the technical information; for example, no I did not realize you could boot linux on a PS3. That is crazy but I guess not so much... after all it does have computer components. Still nice to know.

Also the portability advice was very appreciated. If I could pass out reward points of some kind, each of you would get a bucket full. Thanks guys.

Most of the exclusives on the xbox go to pc or end up going to pc, so I´d say grab a ps3, you´ll get much more then a simple gaming console and the list of exclusives is great and you won´t play them anywhere else.

RPGs- 360 has more western oriented ones. PS3 has more Japanese oriented ones.
FPS-360. Its controller is better suited.
Adventure- Consoles dont have that.
Fighting- Fight Night Round 3 is better on PS3.

Are you looking to supplement your PC gaming or replace it?

If you want a console for the road but intend to stick with PC gaming at home, I'd say a PS3. I know its bigger and bulkier, but the reason is that Sony published games will stay exclusively for it, while MS games often get ported to the PC. I'm sure you'd appreciate the use of kb/m for those shooters more, so it would be hard to recommend a 360 knowing that you can get a lot of its games for the PC.

If you're just giving up PC gaming...well, the first thing is stop and reconsider what you're doing. I'm not a PC gamer and can accept that. You probably are- perhaps you'd want to consider investing in a gaming laptop? It won't give you as great of performance for the price as a desktop, but you know you'll be getting what you know and love.

But if you're truly just going to replace your PC gaming for the most part, then the 360 is a pretty sound choice. A lot of the games that you'd find on PC will be found there as well, so you're getting somewhat of a PC-esque experience. And o fcourse, it has some of its own compelling exclusives.

The last thing I would say is about price. Since you're a PC gamer, you're probably used to playing online. Given that Live costs $50 (maybe less off of Ebay), basically that makes the price difference a wash between both of them. So the 360 is cheaper up front, but over its lifespan, they're roughly the same. So don't let the PS3's price scare you...too much.

I too am a hardcore gamer... and I have owned all three systems since their respective launches. Hands down, for the hardcore gamer, the 360 is the best AT THE PRESENT TIME. Since each console will have a long life, with many surprises in store, my reccomendation could change in the future. I won't go into too great a detail... but it has more games, better performance, achievements (for the hardcore in you, you'll get hooked), best online, etc... For now... 360 all the way.
