I'm totally vexed by the fact that PS3 games aren't selling as well as they should be. PS3 fanboys are raging animals and support Sony with the fury of the gods. There are no fans as rabid as PS3 fans, but their software attach rate is alarming...in a bad way.
As we near the end of 2007, we get closer and closer to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII. These are the games that are supposed to blow up PS3 sales to epic proportions and get everyone to pony up the dollars to buy one. MGS4, Lair, Heavenly Sword and FFXIII were all supposed to be the Tour De FOURce killer apps that made you think that the next generation started when Sony said so. Heavenly Sword was great, but less than stellar reviews from the alpha game sites put people off. Lair is a love it or hate it game. Looks like most people just hated it. I think Factor 5 should program those analog controls and patch it. MGS4 was delayed until next summer and we have yet to see ANY new footage of FFXIII since the game was first announced.
It's expected that your super pussycat world domination killer apps won't show up until the second year of the systems lifespan. Microsoft said Halo 3 was going to be available in the fall of 2007 and they delivered as scheduled. MGS4 is delayed as well as UTIII and many other multi-plat games due to progamming difficulty of the Cell chip. This is to be expected though and shouldn't put any PS3 fanboy off. So what gives? Why aren't you guys buying games?
Let's look at some figures courtesy of vgchartz.com. As far as million sellers go, PS3 has only TWO. That's right, two million plussellers; Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall Of Man. Motorstorm was part of a bundle so it really doesn't count. Resistance was the only cool launch title and people needed something to play on the system. What about all the other titles? Yes, I know PS3's first year wasn't stellar for games, neither was the 360's. Let's look at how many million sellars there are on the 360;Dead Or Alive4, Pro Evo 6, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Forza Motorsport 2, Need For Speed: Carbon, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Ghost Recon 2, Perfect Dark Zero, PGR3, Madden 08, Crackdown, Bioshock, Ghost Recon, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Saints Row, Fight Night round 3, Guitar Hero II, Madden 07, COD3, Rainbow Six Vegas, COD2, Oblivion, Gears Of War and Halo 3 have all sold over 1 million copies. That's 25 games over the course of 2 yrs that have sold over 1 million copies. A lot of those games are crap too. Many of them are first gen titles! So maybe it's the 360 fans who are truly loyal.
I'd really like to know why Sony loyalists defend their system to the death but spend more money on Blu-Ray movies then games. It just doesn't add up. Is the sole purpose of buying a PS3 so you can play MGS4 and FFXIII?! Even the most stellar of games aren't doing well out the box. Ratchet & Clank: Future moved 97,000 units its first week. The game is hailed as the best PS3 title to date and couldn't move 6 figures worth of plastic it's first week out the gate. According to popular trends, we'll probably see a drop in sales next week. I'm willing to bet R&C won't move more than 450k units. That's still not bad either. You would however, expect a game that's getting 9's and 10's in ratings to be able to easily move 1 million units in its lifespan. I'll go as far to say if R&C sells more than 450,000 units by it's fourth week, I will help the cause and buy 3 copies and give them away in a contest.
We still have a lot of waiting to do before we see what the PS3 is really gonna do in it's second year. There's good stuff coming out but if people don't buy the games, you might as well give up on the PS3.
