Don't blame Microsoft, blame Sony. It's their fault they prioritized BluRay over the success of the PS3. Sony, PS3, and Blu-Ray have absolutly NOTHING to do with this. It primarily Square-Enix's stupid decision making. This is hurting more than helping.
You're not looking back far enough. At launch the system was $499 and $599 all because of the high price of Blu Ray. If not for that Sony would have started strong out of the gate and be selling well now with a large user base, therefor SE would have never ported FFXIII to the 360 in the first place.Actually you are quite wrong. Sony's lack of initial sales had nothing to do with it having it's 3rd party exclusives go multiplatform. That blame falls squarely on the shoulders of high budget costs of HD game production. It is unbelievably expensive and companies cannot afford to have key titles release on only one console when there are others that would buy it up just as quickly.
Yes, the PS3 was totally overpriced at launch thanks mostly in part to Blu-Ray. However, the majority of PS3s have been sold in the last year, well after the price cut and bundling Sony did to make the PS3 a worthwhile game console purchase. There was no way Sony could have controlled how much next-gen development would cost for publishers and it is that which drove these companies to go multiplatform.
It's true that HD deving is expensive and partly to blame, but still Sony screwed up big time, and as a result will probably finish dead last this gen. It's still too expensive for most people and a few good titles don't justify the still high price of the console. While I still do think it could use another price cut, I don't think Sony screwed up "big time" as you put it. They are a big company with alot of other things at stake here. Yes, they needed Blu-Ray to win and that alone has helped PS3 sales. Also, the titles on the PS3 have been great, the majority of them are on the 360 as well. The exclusives have been really great and are now coming out much faster and much better. Of course, that is all a matter of opinion so neither of us can be right on that.
I will agree with you though, it is still over priced. I think when Sony manages to put the PS3 at a $300 low end/$400 high end price point, we will see the console really take off. Mind you, PS3 has sold really well this year even before its titles starting making it stand out.
