Of all of my friends who own PS3s, every one of them owns one just because of the Sony name (or opposition to M$). It is rare that I meet someone who owns a PS3 and was not loyal to the name before he/she bought one. Very few people I know were convinced to switch consoles to a PS3 or begin gaming as a PS3 owner.
It seems to me that sony relies heavily on its existing fan base and is not really grabbing onto new gamers. On the other hand, I know many people were convinced to switch to the 360, because they were honestly impressed by what it had to offer and not because of brand loyalty.
This is just my observation, take it as it is, please discuss...
