Even though the upcoming price cut is nice I serioulsy doubt it will spur sales of the PS3. It is still a $500 console with few good games. Even with the better games coming out between now and Xmas the PS3 is still not worth $500 to the general public. When it comes down to around 450 or less is when it will have tons of games and be cheap enough to spur serious interest.

It will most definitely help spur sales. Lower price = higher demand. It's simple economics.

However, since Microsoft will also now lower the price of the Xbox 360, Sony will not gain any ground on the competition. They will still move consoles, though, just not as much as Microsoft & Nintendo will when they implement their price cuts (not that Nintendo needs one).

It will increase sales a little bit, but only by 5 - 10% at most. You can look up historically all elctronic devices and see that in America the sweet spot is between 200 - 350 dollars.

I myself have doubts about the ps3. After E3 we all might be better informed about potential future games for the ps3.

the ps3 costing $500 only $20 more than an x360 elite! and that isn't enough of a price cut?!? surely that means the x360 is seriously over-priced!!!!

Well well, lookie here. We have the one and only human who can speak for the entire "General Public".

Yes, because people hate getting electronics for super cheap. As of currently, the PS3 is the cheapest blu-ray player on the market. But that isn't a selling point at all, is it?

Oh it's enough I mean Sony is already losing money on the console, I think it's 280$ on every PS3 sold now with the drop.

But will it really help? I don't know 500$ is still a lot. It will boost sales at first because there is people waiting for a price drop.

they tweeked production to the point they were turning a small profit at $600 according to bloomberg. So the loss per unit will be less than $100 on the 60 gig

I think your wrong even though u do have your own opinion, but to drop the ps3 price is a good move, just makes the elite system look overpriced since it doesnt have a next gen player with it which for $20 more u can buy a a ps3 which has alot more that comes with it then the elite. Also who really cares about the core xbox 360, no one is gonna wanna buy a system that doesnt come with a hard drive so I see the ps3 doing very well. Good move by sony.

Say's who, you? I speak for myself and IMO no game system is worth anything over $300, but $500 for all the features in a PS3 alone is worth it to me. Let's see....$20 more and I get a Blu-Ray player, WiFi, and a Media card reader, well that's worth $20 for those 3 things hands down regardless of what you say.

However, it is also simple economics to state that more influences the demand of a product (PS3) the just the price. If, for example, the competitor lowers the price of their product (Xbox 360), then demand for your product will drop, thus creating roughly the same sales as before ....

If by "whole new" you mean "something we had 6 months ago." Anyone who wanted a PS3 for $500 has already had the opportunity to buy one (the 20GB model).

Xbox and Wii fans also fail to realize that it didn't have the Wifi, bigger HDD, and card reader in it either, so I say it's a seller.

I agree. It was Sony themselves that statedalready the $500 pricepoint wasn't selling very well so they discontinued the $500 skew when it first launched? This "new" $500 price is actually old and has been proven NOT to move consoles. In the publics eye they'll think NOTHING has changed. It's still at the same price that it was when it first LAUNCHED. Did Sony just self own themselves?

Come on, do you think average joe is going to first know these differences or even care about them? The people Sony needs to purchase the hardware care about PRICE and then software. Customers have already made the statement, $499 is the WRONG pricepoint.

I want Sony to do good and that's why they need to drop it another $50-$100. Reason why I don't think they won't at this time, their dam unwillingness to undercut their prices on stand alone Blu-Ray players. Once again they are looking at format war in Highdef rather than the console war where they are currently getting creamed.

I disagree. It goes both ways, people liked PS2 so they'll buy PS3 and people care about software more then the price, sorry, but it's true. Would you go buy a DVD player when there's no movies out for it? Why do you think the 360 is selling well, because they have software. The PS3 will sell good from the price drop not because of software, but because it's an even cheaper Blu-Ray player now and they have a lot of great movies out now. The software part will come into play around September.

Effectively, there is no price cut. The PS3 is still at the same price it launched with, being 499 and 599... :?

Gotta love this. First the haters were in denial about the price drop, now theyre in damage control:lol:

Really.......please name a successful console that retailed at $600 or even $500 for that matter.

There is a reason why consoles have been released at certain pricepoints.....because flops like the 3DO knocked some sense into them.

If Sony was so sure that people cared about software rather than price, why would they drop the price by $100 right before their huge lineup of titles start coming out?

You also think X360 is selling well.........I'm sorry to let you know this but the X360 has stalled. It's been stuck at 10 million installed users for what, 6 months?

I do agree with one point, it will continue to sell at it's current pace because it's a good deal for a Blu-Ray player. The price now matches the cheapest stand alone Blu-Ray player. I hope Sony likes being outsold 6 to 1 because PS3 is going to continue to be outsold like that in the months ahead. Yes, they'll get some software and that will help sales in the 4th qtr but overall the price has to come down. Their is a mental barrier with most customers, they see a $500 pricepoint and they immidiatly say "I'll wait till it drops in price"......even if you get the couple AAA games this 4th qtr.

Well one thing is that price doesn't mean squat most of the time now a days. Would you go buy a pair of knock off jeans for $20 or pick up some fly name brand ones for $60. The point is Nintendo, MS, and Sony's name alone makes sales! So your logic is pointless IMO. People see the PS name, or Nintendo/MS360 name and they want it regardless of the price, then complain later!
