From looking at the latest NPD data I don't think Sony will cut the price, I wouldn't if I were Sony, I mean 270-280K is good numbers.

I mean the price is not affecting their sales that much even with the troubled economy.

It is not like the PS3 is selling 90k-100k like in the past when sony was forced to drop the price.

What do you think?

From the looks of it, if Sony is going to do one this year, they'll probably hold out until the end of summer or fall season.

Sony sold less PS3s this year in February than they did last year. I think that this is evidence that they require a price drop.

I really think they don't need to the system is at 21 million and going and it's coming with great quality exclusives if they do make it more affordable I predict it will sell like crazy.

Price drop I don't think so. Sony should work on a cheaper to manufacture, redesigned slime line or whatever you want to call it.

I don't think Sony wants to lose more money on their console, april seems too early for a price cut.

Not much less, roughly 4,000 units less, but what is significant is that overall hardware sales were up 11% from the same month last year. Wii and Xbox 360 all sold more this year than last year; PS3 went down. That's not good for Sony.

Thats what I thought, 4000 is not alot to consider a price cut, look at the overall picture, the system sold around 270k-280k which is good.

It'd be cool if they announced a redesign/slim model. Perhaps with BC? :o

I'll go with no, judging by Mid-March hardware sales seems to be mozying along just fine but after E3 then my opinion might change judging by the sales they might have between now and then.

270k-280k is bad when your competition is putting up 380k-400k.

Again, you are looking at it the wrong way. Overall hardware sales for all things video games went up in February this year compared to February 2008. Therefore, if everything was going as planned, PS3 sales should have also gone up as well. Instead, PS3 sales declined somewhat. To me, this is not a good sign for Sony. 270k is a decent number but it is contingent on circumstances and industry trends. If, let's say, hardware sales rose 30% overall and Microsoft and Nintendo sold 900k and 800k units respectively, the 270k by the PS3 would not look so good, now would it?

Selling around 270k-280k is never bad and even if your assumption is right, that doesn't mean Sony must cut the price and lose more money instead and maybe going out of business for the sake of being competitive.

EDIT: and what if they cut the price and their strategy doesn't work still?

Maybe I should elaborate. :P

I think there should be 2 versions of the PS3 if they were to do a redesign/slim model (screw the extra 160GB version):

  1. A stripped down 80GB (like the current but slim to lower production price) that goes for $300.
  2. An 80+GB PS3 thats BC with PS2 and PS1 games that goes for around $400.

It's plausible, if I was sony, I would drop the price to $300 by the middle or near the end of this year

Sony is not going to go out of business if they cut the price of the PS3 by $50 - let's be realistic here. And selling a PS3 means you create other potential revenue streams - PS3 games, Blu-Ray movies, PSN content, and PS3 accessories. Video game companies do this all the time - selling their consoles at a loss because the real profit is in selling the other stuff. And I can guarantee that if they drop the price of the PS3 they are going to sell more units. It's impossible for them not to given the laws of supply and demand.
