Why do ps3 owners have to install games (like gta4) first before playing it and 360 owners dont? I mean, cant developers make games for ps3 that donot require installing like 360 games?Nikko_25
and some 360 games require you to swap discs!!!!
what will we do!?

IIRC GTA IV has an optional install if you want a couple of seconds faster load times.
my PS3 is 40 GB worth of game installations alone, but im still fine with that.
just prepare some food or go out and buy some soda while the games install.
OR take a shower it doesnt hurt.

Thats because MS didnt ship every 360 with a HD, if they had 360 games would also be getting installs.
Games run better from HD than drives.
Swapping disks is a total nightmare and shouldn't be happening at this point in gaming.

You are wrong.
It's.. The PS3 requires installing and the 360 DOESN'T.

Let me ask you a question. Is installing a big problem? Does it affect gamers in a bad way?dream431ca
In a way it does. Consoles have traditionally been about "plug-and-play". You pop the game it, and it just works immediately. This isn't so much of an issue at home with my own, but there are times when I would like to go over to a friends house, pop the game I brought with me into their console, and start playing right away.

You said because it's slow. That's part of it. However there is also the fact that the developers aren't exploiting the discs as well as they could.
Agreed, I'd rather have good games in multiple dvds than average ones with mandatory installsBlu Ray just cant keep with the speed of the game, DVD can do that and more.

well yeah I didn't bother reading the 2nd part of that article:PThat part is interesting though, let's hope all devs find a way around the installations and make it atleast optional.

The fast that it is slow is not part of it, it is ALL of it. There is nothing mystical or misunderstood about Bluray's disc structure. Data is written to and read from a bluray disc in the exact same manner as a DVD or even a CD. Sectors are written sequentially from a to z, and read on a request basis. The only difference is the wavelength of the light used. There's not much a developer could do to "exploit" the discs beyond what they're doing. Stop making excuses.
Just read the article. The latter half points out alternative methods that some developers are using to compensate for the slower read speed.

Swapping discs has nothing to do with the HDD, that is because of the limited space on DVD9. Along with that swapping discs isn't a nightmare, I see that only as a fanboy's attempt at damage control. I find neither installs nor disc swapping to be overly inconvenient. It was only slightly annoying in Metal Gear Solid 4 for me, with installs every chapter, might as well been disc swapping then. Otherwise it's fine either way, and saying otherwise is biased, if you ask me.

The alternative method is to to put the same data multiple times on the disk so it reduces seek times but that removes the whole Blu-Ray bigger space advantage , the other method is to install a big part of the game and again fill up the Blu-Ray disk with multiple data to reduce seek times .
It still means the slow drive is crap for games and they should have waited for a faster drive .
I rwad that article and since all multiplat games can only be 9gigs due to the 360, all multiplat games on the ps3 could just have the data duplicated on the disk since there is enough space.
I dont mind the installs. Its only usually around 10 mins, which I ususally spend just watching tv. what i wonder is, if all 360's had hard drives, would devs want to do installs too? I mean halo 3 had some really annoying load times. Between missions you had to watch that picture of a halo being made which is incredibly boring.

For multiplatform titles, the duplicate method doesn't seem to me like a real issue. I mean these games were designed to fit on a DVD9.
True, but ya can't change the past now. You can only hope that developers still try to make the best of things.

This is completely incorrect. Why don't we see disk swapping on the PC? Would this be due to HDD perhaps?
Installs are the easiest option by far.
I just have flash backs of playing monkey island 2 on the Amiga, spread over something like 12 disks.
Why do ps3 owners have to install games (like gta4) first before playing it and 360 owners dont? I mean, cant developers make games for ps3 that donot require installing like 360 games?Nikko_25They could but why not use the standard HDD to reduce loading times?
who cares about the load times for a bd game. did it really matter to ppl when you had to install every act for mgs4, i think not. the games are still good, and the installs do not take that long to complete. although i dont like waiting, there is no big deal in doing so. both consoles have great games with slight drawbacks. installing is NOT one of them.
ps. i am not a fanboy, i have both a 360 and ps3

wow, that is an awesome comment, props to charomid :P:P
whats wrong with installs?? its only like 5 mins. its not like the world gonna end in 5 mins. * goes to get a drink while it installs. OMG THE WORLD IS ENDING!!!!*munkeypoo45
Or they could complain about the install on the forums while its installing. I think that would wast time pretty fast.
why are people complaining about something so ridiculous?
I mean it only takes a few minutes for the games to install on the Ps3 for Christ sakes!
When will people realize that they are two different systems???whodey8584
Different systems in a sense that they both have different issues like installing games onto the HDD. And yes it is a issue. Other than that PS3 and the XBOX360 are pretty much the same.
Let me ask you a question. Is installing a big problem? Does it affect gamers in a bad way?dream431ca
Besides losing HDD space (which is easily upgradable) I think the only reason people pay attention to it is find something to complain about.
It would be exactly the same if all 360's came standard with even a small hard drive. But since they dont, devs dont make the games require an install.Spartan8907
Thats not true, the 12x DVD drive is more than fast enough not to require installs, now had you said "if the 360 had standard hard drives it could CACHE data, i would agree with you. Lets just face it, blu-ray is too slow for this gen gaming, but there are ways around it. duplicating data is better for the consumer, but more costly for the developer because they have to write code for the duplicated data. Installing data is cheaper, and we all know that game development comes with a budget which is probably why devs. choose the latter. so its not "lazy" devs, its more like "3rd party devs with a budget";)

If you don't think waiting 10-20 minutes to install a game only to have it take 10-15GB off your harddrive isnt bad then... Good for you. It's a big issues to those that buy lots of PS3 games and only have only 40GB, 60GB, guess they are forced to pay extra for a 300GB HDD not made by sony. And yes lots of people do have 4-6 games on the go at once. Installing and reinstalling is a big annoyance for those who will be wanting to play past games again. Thens theres games like MGS4 that like to take it a step further with 5 minute installs after each act. :|
Then theres also the issues of knowing how many games you are allowed to download from the PSN store knowing that you probably will have to download all these mandatory installs thus practically filling up your HDD.
I do agree that some of them do take a little too much space(I have a 40gb Ps3) but i personally think it isn't too bad!
only on some games(like DMC4 and MGS4)

It's called over exaggerating..... What I ment to say was 5-8GB. Which still makes it a big issue.

Well exaggeration doesnt add much to an argument, only hurts it dont you think?
