Sony Computer Entertainment America has released statistics pointing to an upswing in sales over the Black Friday period in North America -- centered around the notorious retail rush that takes place the day after the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S.

Sony has revealed that overall PlayStation brand sales during the week including Black Friday increased by 178%, while sales dollars increased by 154%.

According to Sony, PlayStation 3 sales have increased by 245% compared to last year's Black Friday sales. Further, Since November 2nd, PS3 hardware sales have increased by 298% -- which includes both the 80GB and new 40GB models.

Older products were not immune to the Black Friday sales spike: the recently-refreshed PSP increased its sales by 136% compared to its previous week's sales, while PS2 sold 287% better than its previous week.

Broader statistics that help place these numbers in context were not immediately available. It's also worth noting that the December sales period is typically even stronger in North America than November.

I think they were sold out at this time last year, right about when they were $9,000 on Ebay.

If this were any other month but december this would be good news. Its kinda just obvious news right now though.

Wow. The PS3 wasn't even readily available during Black Friday last year because of Blu-Ray manufacturing problems.

This is normal for november, and next month you will get another increases by 200% as sales sky rocket for Xmas. All the consoles do this. I mean the 360 racked in 1 million sales last December. These are the two months that almost eclipse the other 2. Don't buy into holiday statistics for any company.

Well, the bar was set so low from sales from the rest of year...

The real question is if they can keep it up. If it just spikes and goes back down then it does PS3 no good.

Huge news.... Black Friday is the day EVERYTHING skyrockets. It's called Black Friday for a reason. It's the day all the retailers go into the "Black," meaning they make a profit. Sales on everything go up like 300%

So, the biggest holiday shopping day, where most big name stores like Wal-Mart gain 40% of their annual sales, is surprised to show that a system sells out and in a high increased margin as well? When many people in the market business know what a huge revenue electronics, especially video games bring? I'm sure we will see something of similar fashion with Wii and 360 along with DS.

OH MY GOD! YOU MEAN THE PS3 SOLD 245% MORE THAN LAST YEAR'S POST-LAUNCH PS3 TIME FRAME?!! HOLY JEEBERS! PS3 HAS SOLD 300% MORE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON JUST AFTER A PRICE CUT! ZOMG! CELEBRATION!

You remind me of Renegade, posting Sony news and bashing the 360 left and right.

Last year the PS3 supply was very limited because of some manufacturing delays. This year the supplies should be there making this a good year for the PS3.

The PS3 sales may be much better than the numbers are posted (the true numbers from Sony will not be released until March which is the end of the physical year for the system world wide).

There was still limited supplies last black friday. People need to think of all the factors, or else they'll look like fools. All these numbers are completely predictable and explainable.

Uh oh, I think I hurt ones feelings. I think Daysairlines said it best, here let me quote him:
"How come MS and Nintendo never send a press release out every two weeks about sales?"
Maybe because the PS3 is in dead last and Sony will flaunt every positive spark of success that they get. Smells like desperation to me and everyone else in this thread agrees:o No ones foolish enough to believe self-generated hype in the midst of one of the most pathetic, ill-conceived launch years in history.

PS. I know it does, their actually 10 and 1 now and the Mavs...*checks stats*...8:5.
PPS. Your presumptuous analysis of system was doesn't make you smarter because you used big words.

Maybe because Sony is trying to pony up to their shareholders and telling them "it's okay"

Microsoft bread and butter is Operating System.

Nintendo is the leading market share this gen.

Maybe these are the reason, but definitely not facts.

The comparisson is with the same time last year though, so it's something els like maybe:

1 - The PS3 library or future looks good
2 - There's a version of it that's $300 cheaper
3 - People that have a 360 are now buying a PS3.
4 - ???

Wow, Sony is really trying to shuffle the cards here.

Sony has revealed that overall PlayStation brand sales during the week including Black Friday increased by 178%, while sales dollars increased by 154%.

Older products were not immune to the Black Friday sales spike: the recently-refreshed PSP increased its sales by 136% compared to its previous week's sales, while PS2 sold 287% better than its previous week.ChristopherM80

So basically they sold alot of PS2s.

According to Sony, PlayStation 3 sales have increased by 245% compared to last year's Black Friday sales. Further, Since November 2nd, PS3 hardware sales have increased by 298% -- which includes both the 80GB and new 40GB models. ChristopherM80

Why do they keep giving us comparative 40- and 80 GB numbers instead of total sales? Well, we all know the answer to that. Only 245% increase compare to last year is horrible considering the recent price drop and the fact that the PS3 only sold 197k total in NA last november.

Huge self-ownage. I won't tell you how just yet...I'll let you think this one out

Last november they moved like less then 100k on Black Friday... because they were in short supply right after launch... So what they are saying is it sold 245K this black friday... at most.

The only systems during my Black Friday run were 80GB PS3s and Halo Xbox360s.

Premium, Elite, Arcade, and Core SKUS of the 360 were nowhere to be seen, 60GB and 40GB PS3s were nowhere to be seen, and unsurprisingly, I still haven't seen a Wii on a store shelf since the one I picked up in February.

The Big 3 are all having an awesome holiday,
