Yesterday we reported on the PlayStation 3 becoming the fastest selling console in the United Kingdom. With 165,000 units sold, the PS3 easily toppled the previous record holder, Nintendo's Wii, which had sold 105,000 units in its U.K. debut.
Now, according to a BBC News report, it's been revealed that the European sales total for Sony's next-gen console is approximately 600,000 units. That would mean that around 400,000 PS3s are still in the channel, as Sony shipped one million units across the continent for launch.
Ray Maguire, managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment U.K. commented on the successful launch in the U.K. and Europe as a whole, noting that the figures were a vote of confidence in the machine. "Having broken the record for launch sales, we are now replenishing retail stock across the country," he said.
Although Sony has yet to release a worldwide sales figure for the PS3, if you total the nearly one million in North America, a similar amount in Japan, 20,000 or so in Australia, and add that to the European total and U.S. numbers from the past couple months, you could estimate that Sony has sold around 3 million units worldwide or even slightly north of that.
Sony has continually said that they will ship 6 million units by the end of their fiscal year, which closes at the end of this month. It doesn't appear that that's about to happen though.
