The Xbox 360 came out in November 22,2005, which was 1 year and 9 months ago and has since then sold about 10.4 million units. The PS3 war released November 11, 2006, which was 9 months ago and has sold about 4.6 million units. At this rate the ps3 should have sold 10.4 units in about another year or so, which would tie it with the sales rate of the Xbox. So all this talk about how the ps3 is doing bad is just wrong, its doing exactly the same as the xbox, just a year later.

This is not my opinion, its just math and facts.

The 360 for months was selling out becasue it was extreamly supply constrained. The PS3 on the other hand is very available and still can't beat the 360's constrained numbers.

it was almost at 100k/month before the price drop. vgchartz has been showing a pretty big increase. vgchartz isn't accurate but they can't be that incredibly far off so the chances that the ps3 still won't pass 100k is pretty much nonexistent.

It wont change much, the 360 also had a price drop. And Madden is better on 360, which is a big deal

My guess is the PS3 will sell a ton of units when MGS 4 and FF 13 release, If I remember correctly the PS2 got a huge boost by MGS 2 and FF x.

Is a couple months of better sales really going to matter, though? Sure, it might be better for July and maybe August, but it's probably going to drop under the 360 again come September.

The 360 was supply constrained until April. It's now August and PS3 is still in line with 360s rate when it was at this stage in it's life. PS3 is currently outpacing Xbox 360 worldwide as well, and surprisingly MS has shipped a pretty low number of 360s this year so far. Halo 3 will obviously make up for that, but after that in 2008 (which is PS3s big year) PS3 will probably outpace 360 worldwide and never look back.

Add to that the fact that PS3 has a poor game selection currently, and is more expensive, it speaks volumes for the PS brand.

By how much will PS3 outpace Xbox 360 in sales in 2008 when it actually has a good game selection? And then later on when it's actually an affordable console?

PS3 right now, is not doing nearly as good as it's supposed to be doing. There's really no, "Well, if you look at the cost and selection of games..." because Sony thought the PS3 was going to be in the #1 spot by now with the PS3.

PS3 was expected to be the highest selling console this gen. when it's all said and done and last for over 10 years... Nothing I have seen so far has told me it definitly won't happen.

The fact is: PS3 is 600 dollars. It has few big name exclusives (if any) and is STILL outpacing 360 in worldwide sales.

How will PS3 be selling when it has it's main big games out, and is affordable so all the millions of PS2 players can actually afford one?

love the sig Yellow_Rose, However I thought the consensus on SW was that sales didnt matter this gen? Especially for people who liked 360 and ps3 because if they looked at sales they had to accept Wii dominence?

That doesn't make ANY difference whatsoever. The PS3 is $599 US Dollars. The 360 has been very available for over a year now, there is no excuse for it's piss poor numbers.

But anyways, It doesn't matter what cows or what Sony thought PS3 would do. I don't consider biased opinions when I make these kinds of predictions, I look at the facts, the games, past sales history, and things like that.

Who knows?

There will be ALOT of people who make the switch to Xbox 360 or Wii.

There will also be ALOT of people who after getting a 360 or Wii decide to replace them with a PS3 or get a PS3 as well.

There will also be ALOT of people who wait on getting a PS3 until it drops to an affordable price, and considering how PS2 is STILL selling at a high rate, I think consumers can wait.

PS3 being so damn expensive ensures a longer lifecycle for it this gen. simply because so many people will wait on getting one.

Well to be honest all PS are awful the first year in sales and gamewise. PS was bad until tekken, FFVII, GT, Crash 2 and MGS came  to save it.The same thing happened with PS2 until the second year when GT3, FFX, DMC, JAK, MGS2 and GTA came to save it. We can only hope that 2008 is PS3s comeback year again with new AAAs and new IPs.
I do think they need to drop the price though. Or they will stay last place in America at least.

The price will always be a problem. Even if Sony drops it to like $350 next year when the flagship titles come out (Killzone 2, GTA4, GT5, FFXII, MGS4, GOW3) it will still cost alot.

without halo and the original xbox price tag was $200 so at twice the price its still matching it thats kinda good.

Well, I have to laugh at them then. (even though I am a cow/hermit)

But anyways, It doesn't matter what cows or what Sony thought PS3 would do. I don't consider biased opinions when I make these kinds of predictions, I look at the facts, the games, past sales history, and things like that.

CaseyWegner

i still think the price is going to be a problem.

So do I. It's the main reason why I think PS3 won't sell as well as PS2.

I'm thinking it will sell 80 Million, over the course of 10 years or so.

If you think about it, that's around HALF of PS2s sales rate.

I think it's a VERY good thing that this gen will be more evenly spread. More competetion=more amazingly good games for me :D

I think in the short run (the regular 5 year cycle), Wii will win by a LONGSHOT. PS3 and 360 will be neck and neck. But PS3 will have a big advantage, because it will last another 5 YEARS or so simply because of how expensive it is.

Although price will hurt PS3 alot, PS3s long term appeal will eventually make it the overall winner, this gen will not be the near monopoly it was last gen though. Which is good.

Here's how I see it.

Wii: 60 Million sold over the course of 5 years.

Xbox 360: 50 Million sold over the course of 7 years.

PS3: 80 Million sold over the course of 10 + years.

PS3 being so damn expensive ensures a longer lifecycle for it this gen. simply because so many people will wait on getting one.

How long a life did the $599 Jaguar have?

You compare the PS brand with the Jaguar Brand. :|

You must be crazy.

You said it would last longer because it was so expensive

And the PS brand didn't save the PSX from flopping.

I meant it will last longer because it's so expensive, yes, all things considered of course.

At this rate both consoles will sell extremely well, but the PS3 will never overtake the 360.

It wont change much, the 360 also had a price drop. And Madden is better on 360, which is a big deal

I don't think $20-$50 price drops are signifcant as a $100 price drop.

IMO, the ps3 will eventually overtake the 360 or atleast tie the 360. The PS3 is expensive, but for a $600 console its not doing bad, its 6 million away from the sales of the xbox, but also came a year later. If it sole 4.2 millions in 9 months, if the sale rate continues, by the time it is the current age of the 360, 1year9months,it will have sold9.8 million units. Once the price drops, and the games get better sales WILL start to increase, you cant deny that. Now whether sales will increase to match or top the xbox i dont know, but im expecting both the Xbox360 and PS3 to be about the same sometime in the future.

PSX wasn't a "new" console. It was an video centric PS2 for media users. Sony has stated they might release something like that of the PS3 for video enthusiats.

What worries me is that the 360 is selling about as well as the original xbox.MGS9150

No, since obviously your a PS3 owner, is that the PS3 is selling worst than the original XBox, and we know that that system didn't fair well, did it.

That is what should worry you!!!
