It's no secret that Sony intended for the PLAYSTATION 3 to be the highest selling console of ALL TIME when they first began research and development on the PLAYSTATION 3, the successor to its two younger predecessors, the PLAYSTATION and PLAYSTATION 2. Just looking at the features the PLAYSTATION 3 contains, it becomes evident just how powerful the home entertainment system really is.
From its powerful CELL BROADBAND Engine to the top of the line Blu-Ray disc player, it's safe to say that Sony has not cheaped out on any part of production/design of the future of gaming, the PLAYSTATION 3. You can truly see that Sony has built the system with a 10-year life span in mind. Every aspect of the PLAYSTATION 3 is truly next gen.
The CELL BROADBAND Engine is the most powerful CPU in a console to date, confirmed by multiplat devs such as Joker454 on the Beyond3dforums.
The Reality Synthesizer GPU or RSX works in perfect harmony with CELL to provide a truly next-gen gaming experience almost as vivid and vibrant as the real world. Even though Sony has not revealed the clock speeds, etc regarding the GPU, it is rumored to run at 550mhz, more powerful than the Xbox 360.
The PLAYSTATION 3 also features 256 mb of ultra-fast XDR ram, running over 3 times faster than the Xbox 360's ram.
The powerful Blu-Ray disc drive features playback of cutting-edge Blu-Ray disc media for an experience second to none. Let's not forget that it also upscales DVDs to true "FULL HD" resolutions (a la 1080p) better than even the most top of the line standalone upscaling DVD players. Check out the AVSforums if you believe I'm giving you misinformation, it's all there.
The Dualshock 3 controller which includes both rumble and amazing SIXAXIS tilt functions all in a familiar, friendly controller design that was awared an Emmy.
The power and reset buttons are touch sensitive and the disc tray is internal with no sliding tray, further seperating it from the competition and emphasizing its whole next-gen feel. Let's not forget the slick and stylish design that encases the expensive/powerful internals.
Did I mention the system runs super quiet and outputs less heat than the Xbox 360? Finally, the defect rate is incredibly low, squashing any fears a consumer may have regarding defective hardware. This system is built to last and can withstand the test of time.
The PLAYSTATION 3 also features HDMI 1.3 output (a feature that mainstream TVs haven't even adopted yet because it is so advanced) and lossless audio. Recently, Ryan Payton, a member of the Kojima team developing one of Sony's flagship titles, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots mentioned that the audio featured in the game is so clear and crisp it has to be dumbed down a little because you could hear the cracking in the actors' voices. This is NEXT-GEN, this is borderline real life. Sony is on the cutting edge blurring the line between gaming and the real world with their products.
And last but not least, games. The PLAYSTATION 3 already has a vast variety of games to choose from with much, much more coming out by the year's end. The variety in the gaming library is amazing, positioning Sony to target a wide audience of gamers ensuring healthy sales growth for the future, something the Xbox 360 suffers from. PLAYSTATION 3's gaming library is very diversified, with games such as Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Eye of Judgement, Lair, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Folklore PAIN, Super Rub Dub, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Resistance, Motorstorm, F1 Racing topping the list.
And I haven't even gotten into Sony's flagship titles for next year, many of which are some of the highest selling games of all time. Haze, Unreal Tournament 3, Metal Gear Solid 4:Guns of Patriots, Gran Turismo 5, Grand Theft Auto IV, Devil May Cry IV, God of War 3, Infamous, Wipeout, Metal Gear Online, Tekken 6, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII VS, White Knight Story, Socom: Confrontation, KILLZONE 2, Silent Hill 5, Little Big Planet, The Golden Compass, and a TON of other titles I can't think of off the top of my head are games that will set the PLAYSTATION 3 apart from the competition and help ensure the fact that PLAYSTATION 3 will outsell every other console in videogame history.
All of this and I haven't even gotten to the PSP-PS3 interactivity. With the release of the new Firmware 2.0, it is clear Sony cares about the consumer and is constantly expanding on the original basis. I remember when Phil Harrison said that your experience with the PLAYSTATION 3 on the first day will not be the same as your experience with the console later on in its life cycle. While Microsoft takes ages to update the blades/OS features, Sony is coming out with firmware updates constantly. Being able to access my PLAYSTATION 3 through my PSP wirelessly anywhere is amazing, this is truly cutting edge technology built in all Sony products. Not to mention how awesome PLAYSTATION 3 games look on Sony Bravia LCD HDTVs, with the XBR4 recently winning Cnet.com's editor choice award for best LCD of 2007, beating the expensive Samsung 81 series!
It's important to note that Sony has released the 40Gb version of the system at an absolutely vital time. With the holiday season here, Sony is providing consumers with the power of the PLAYSTATION 3 coupled with the added bonus of affordiblity. Anyone sitting on the fence should go out and buy the system while it is still in supply, this puppy won't be here for long. Early reports already confirm that it's flying off the shelves. If the system sold on par with the Xbox 360 at an insanely high $599 price point, you can imagine how well it is going to sell at $399, with must-own games right around the corner. This is the start of PLAYSTATION 3's domination over all other consoles.
So when you combine all this, it is evident to see that the PLAYSTATION 3 is the must-have console from now until 2016. I'm convinced that Sony will sell more PLAYSTATION 3's than any other console in videogame history. What does System Wars think?
