Despite being released a year later in North America

Despite being released a year and a half later in Europe

Despite being $600 at Launch and getting a lot of bad press

Despite PSN taking a long time to get to respectable levels

Despite being more difficult to develop on

Despite having a controller that many disliked

Despite having a weak exclusive lineup for the first 2 years

Despite releasing at the same time as Wii, which had all the hype and media

PS4 is significantly stronger and easy to develop on, therefore will have better versions of every multiplat game

PS4 UI and online service are on par with XBL

PS4 controller is hugely improved, and possibly better than the X1 controller.

PS4 has stronger franchises that PS3 didnt have back in 2006 (The Last of Us, Uncharted, Infamous, LBP)

PS4 won't have to worry about Wii U at all

Since 2010 Sony has lumped PS2/PS3 and PSP/Vita sales together and at that time PS2 was still selling 3.5-4m units a year, you can bet if the PS3 had surpassed the 360 Sony would have let us know that by know.

Not only does this indicate that the PS3 sold less than 13.9 million, but that the PS2 sold around 4.1 million again (They only stopped shipping it in the last quarter).

Therefore, the PS3 shipped around 12.4 million during FY12, giving it the grand total of 76.3 million (as of March 31st 2013). For reference, the 360 was at 77.2 million.

Sony state that revenues were flat. "PlayStation 3, 2 and PSP sales are all quoted as being down"

PS2 sales were down (obviously, they stopped shipping in Jan 2013). PS2 sales were not combined with PS3 sales.

360 is at 78.2 million.

That was at the start of the summer.

Its pretty bad when compared to Sonys dominance in the generation before.

No way to know how many PS3s or 360s were rebought. Or how many PS3s were bought as cheap blu ray players. So no point getting into it. Software wise, they're both similar which suggests their install base is also similar.
