A friend of mine in college is doing business analysis report on the PS3 (with 20 other students) and he sent me the results of his findings. Some interesting stuff in here. He contacted all outlets to find numbers on these items sold. This is just one large area of the country but still is alarming that the PS3 is selling so bad in a large city like Indy. He said the numbers are constantly slowing and his final project will go over a period of 6 months. He also stated that Aprils numbers are already pretty bad as the same stores all together have already sold only 59 PS3's by the 22nd of the month. I hope these numbers don't stay this way forever, if so I will have a $600 paper weight on my hands.

PS3 sold in Indianapolis area March 1st through April 1st

Best Buy - 12 Locations - 22 Sold

Circuit City - 6 Locations - 12 Sold

General Retail Stores - 77 Locations - 54 sold

EB/Gamstop game Stores - 12 Locations - 22 sold

Total Sold = 110 PS3's Sold

699 Xbox 360's Sold

588 Wii's Sold

Prior Months Numbers Sold (PS3)

January - 209

February - 158

March - 110

April - 59 (through 22nd of month)

The other part of this project was to do random surveys (mainly with people 18 to 30 yeras old) to see what their intentions are towards the PS3 in the future. He has taken in 3900 surveys so far and these are the results.

In the Next 2 years what are your intentions towards the PS3.

9% - I fully intend on buying a PS3

55% - I will never buy a PS3

16% - I will buy one only if something it offers interests me.

20% - I already own another console and do not want another.

How much of a factor is the cost of the PS3 keeping you from buying one.

78% - Price is not an factor.

22% - Price is a big detractor for me.

If not price what reason keeps you from purchasing one.

39% - Prefer Competitions Console.

21% - Lack of Online Functionality.

15% - Lack of Games

14% - PS Games Don't Appeal to Me

11% - Other

Does the inclusion of a Blu-Ray Player add any interest to you as a consumer.

10% - Yes, a Blu-Ray Player would be a nice extra.

67% - No, I buy my consoles to play games.

12% - What is Blu-Ray.

11% - Don't care either way.

What do you make of the overall attitude of consumers towards the PS3.

59% - Negative

22% - Positive

19% - Neutral

These were just a few of the questions on the survey. There were over 20 questions but I did not feel like posting them all so I just posted the few I thought mattered the most. Once the entire project is concluded he said he would send me a full copy that I can post, and I will do so when they are done later on this summer.

All these numbers are based of the report and I changed nothing (copy and pasted most of it ) so no "your making crap up" cries. Believe me if you want to or not, I just thought it would be interesting to share the report as it is so far.

P.S. Sales statistics were from one city but the surveys were done in random locations over 9 states.

I think this captures a lot of the sentiments on and around my campus also in Minnesota. Most people would rather get other consoles/have and Sony around here is more of a joke than anything

Kind of a shame because they did do alot of good things over the last decade. I just wished they would not get complacent as they have become.

Why would it surprise you that PS3 is selling poorly in urban areas?  There is a lot of people making little money in cities and most of the time throwing down $600 for a console instead of putting it towards rent just isn't a good idea.  I imagine most PS3 owners live in a suburban area and are middle class/upper middle class.  There are exceptions of course.

That was a part that surprise to me. Makes things seem even worse for Sony in a way.

I highly doubt that, If the PS3 started at $300, I think a lot more would be sold.

These underlined and highlighted results shoudl be omitted from his study. Obviously they are returning biased info because of the nature of the topic. People do not like to admit that they do/don't have money (actually they don't like to talk about money/income at all, it's one of several very sensitive issues and can sometimes provide biased results as seen here). Those underline returns are extremely biased IMO.

Maybe you missed where it says the survey wasn't limited to the city, but rather spread over 9 states?

For a college project, possibly statistics if it's actually true. That seems to be the obvious reason, again if true.

55% said they will NEVER by a PS3...what the heck? Also almost 80% said price wasnt a factor...80%!?!? 600 is a lot of fin money especially when u add the warranty and a game plus tax.

I dont know this little project is a little suspicious.

I'd say return statistics on that Question about price are quite biased.

It was a business class and groups of students had to do market surveys for a new (less then 12 month old product)

Yeah I really don't believe that price isn't a big reason for people waiting to buy a PS3. Some of the other factors in the poll seem....fishy. I mean 20% believe the PS3 has no online functionality?

Regarding the price, I think those statistics are probably accurate. Yes, for most of the 14 year olds on this board, the PS3 price tag seems out of this world. But the average American family income for 2006 was $70,500. Point being; most Americans can afford a PS3 if they actually wanted one. And even myself at age 25, if I REALLY wanted a PS3, I could easily save for a couple weeks and buy one. The problem is *desire*. People for assorted reasons do not want a PS3 - and that's what this study illustrates. It's not that there are millions of Americans out there burning inside for a PS3 - and only the high price places it out of sight. The issue is that most people are indifferent about the system. And the bad press simply fuels this feeling of indifference.

Tell him to do a survey of current ps2 owners 18 to 40 and see what their intentions about the ps3 are.
