You just don't make up new hardware in a year you know. I know it seems like this works with PC hardware manufacturers but it doesn't work with consoles. Sony just didn't throw a 7900 in PS3 and say "good luck!" they had it specially designed by nVidia and while it may equal the power of a 7800 or 7900 it's architecture is different and it is designed to work in a different way that your standard PC graphics card (working with the cell etc.)
Blu Ray was a good decision anyway. It won the format war because of PS3 probably. It already is a great gaming machine to those who like the games on it.

actually... that is fairly wrong.
Sony sort of panicked late in development when they realized the original plan of having 2 of the early version full Cell Processors wasn't going to work(The Cell was originally an out-of-order, 7 SPU's open with the one CPU core for general stuff(sort of like now. Only now, several cores are blocked off and is in-order), and higher bandwidth through the entire Cell. They were going to put two of these side by side in the PS3. GPU wasn't needed because of SPU's. Cost and the fact that it was nearly impossible to program for made these plans go down in flames). So, late in development, Sony freaked and called up nVidia to get them a GPU to work with the Cell which would act as their CPU. nVidia took the GeForce 7800 and literally put it in the PS3 with a couple bandwidth and memory modifications so that it could be accessed easier by the Cell. But it IS literally the 7800. It works the exact same way aside from some different bandwidth so that it isn't a pain to access using the Cell. But fundamentally it is the same as the GeForce 7800.
I would just like to point out that the PS3 launched a year after the 360 as everyone knows. What no one seems to ever bring up is the fact that Sony could have used the extra year to put better tech into the PS3, and at the price it launched at I was expecting the PS3 to be leaps and bounds above the 360. Instead Sony choose to trojan horse blu ray into peoples living rooms at the expense of a better gamming machine. The thing I want to know is why is this acceptable to Sony fans?nosedive7
Or they could've released a piece of crap like X360 a year early like Microsoft right? No HDMI, No HD-DVD or Blu-ray, No wifi, and horrible reliability. Noisy console, huge power brick, DVD drive that scratched disks, etc... Let's think about what you are saying for a second.

Which features would those be? Since I've had my PS3 they've added a whole bunch more to the system than they've dropped. Including PSP remote play, new Blu-ray firmware, upscaling for DVD, Home is in the works, improved the network quite a bit, improved the store, etc... Unless you are talking about BC, guess what the PS2 is still out there if you want it unlike the Xbox and the 80gb does BC and gives you 20gb more of space + a game for $100 less than the 60gb cost.

You might want to read this link when you get a chance:

Did Nintendo DELAY the Wii as well? I don't think so.
I thought it was common knowledge that MS jumped this generation early by releasing the X360 a year early. Infact the original Xbox was only around 4 years.

If it was up to Sony you'd still be playing PS2 and PS3 would just be coming out.
Sony had to actually rush the PS3 to production because MS launched early. Did you forget that PS3 wasn't actually due for another 2 years after X360 launched?? The original specification for PS3 was 2 cell processors and more SPEs per processor. It was when MS announced the X360 early launch that Sony had to drastically change the original specifications of the PS3.

thats not the reason, the reason they released early was because they couldn't do it, harrowwhip pointed it out that it was near to impossible for them to do that, and not have a system that was impossible to code for, and cost 2000 dollars or more. dont blame 360 for the ps3's inferiority.

Well look at what 1 year cost them, how do you think PS2 would compete against X360 for two years. Ask Nintendo what happens if you let the competition goto market first for too long. It's kind've ignorant too suggest Sony should go their own way when competing with Microsoft a company of nearly unlimited funds.
