With firmware 2.4, Sony will introduce trophies and a leveling up system similar to COD 4 and Halo 3. With that in mind, if you own both consoles and you're deciding on whether you should buy the 360 or PS3 version of a multiplatform game (if both versions run and look the same), would you rather choose the PS3 version because of the trophy/leveling up system or the 360 version because of achievements and gamescore?

IGN's Chris Roper's Take

What Sony showed us of 2.40 looks awesome. I never really missed custom soundtracks, but the Trophy stuff is fantastic. I'm a big fan of the 360's Achievement system, not for overall points, but rather to show how much I've done in a single game. Sony's version looks to cater to my tastes better than a somewhat random number scheme, which is great.

Also, the Level system is brilliant. My Xbox 360 GamerScore is somewhere close to 17,000 right now. If I get an Achievement worth 10 points, that doesn't mean a whole lot at this point. But on the PS3, if I'm at Level 12, I know that every Bronze Trophy brings me one step closer to Level 13. In the scheme of things, it still doesn't mean anything in the overall betterment of my life (getting to Level 50 won't earn me a pay raise at work or a free dinner), but it is one more little thing for me to obsess over and will start getting me to prefer playing the PS3 version of a game rather than its all-things-equal 360 counterpart.

IGN'sGreg Miller's Take

Once this Trophy thing gets going, I'm done with Achievements.

With one morning meeting, Sony has made me ready to buy every cross-platform title on the PlayStation 3 instead of its Microsoft-bred competitor. Sure, points are nice, but now I'm Leveling up? You mean to tell me that Sony's turned my gaming into an RPG of its own? You mean that everyone's going to be starting from square one and have an equal chance at being king of Trophies?

Sign me up.

OK, umm these guys have no idea what they are talking about. There are achievement points, yes. But, the achievement themselves have a csutom graphic to go with them, that you can view any time via the dashboard. Once more, you can look at a friends achievement list, game by game, and compare it to your own.

They fail on an epic level.

Of course, you'd think that with 2.5 years of time to study what did and didn't work with LIVE, they'd be able to create something that builds upon LIVE's approach and does a few things better.

You do not need XBL gold to have gamer points. I let my XBL account expire for now and I can still see my friends online and I still like gamer points.

Xbox Live doesn't feature a leveling up system. Gamerpoints are also random. Developers are free to assign points for any achievement in their games. Kinda weak if you ask me.

Yes. The menus are faster. Glad everyone is keeping up.

Based on the videos, I can go from the main XMB to my list of achievements on a particular game faster and smoother than I can on LiVE.

I will also be able to select my custom music faster than I can on XBL. It's the slowness with which the blades open and close that are at fault.

faster than selecting "View Achievements" while in the games title screen, or just clicking on your gamercard in the dashboard? I don't see how one is faster than the other.

As though either takes a long time or something. That is a really moot point.

Both are (will be) fun and are pretty equal. I hate he logic that 10 points means nothing but if you are working on leveling up it means more. What the hell was that guy talking about.

It's hard to guage how the leveling will work out.

That said, at this point, I see the achievements still ahead of the curve. First, they were standard and required day one. Similarly, custom soundtracks are not standard, but up to a game's devs to allow. The trophies are not required for existing games, and those that are patched will require another playthrough.

And how are the trophies shared outside of the console?

lol. it's not a problem with my 360. it's that the design of the blades means they take ~1 second or 2 to open. there is no such delay on the XMB. It moves as fast as you can click. Time saved. While remaining smooth.

It's not even a debate. that's a simple fact.

According to the firmware 2.4 vids, the in-game XMB runs faster than the Live dashboard. IGN also commented on how much faster the in-game XMB is compared to the Live dash. I've owned a couple of 360's. Some were 360 Elite's and some were Premium's and it was pretty annoying when the Live dashboard ran a little too slow for my tastes during certain games. For the most part it runs fine though but like I said before, seems as if the in-game XMB is going to run faster.

Yes, it appears to be faster. I didn't say "ZOMG, i'm saving 10 minutes on XMB!"

I simply said it was faster. No reason for the lemmings to get bent out of shape. If it's 0.5 seconds faster start to finish, guess what? It's faster. :|

Yea, I think some of their points were dense...but my point remains. the XMB will allow me to do things I've done on LIVE faster. and I'm all for it. Doesn't have to be a metric ton of time saved, but sometimes waiting for blades to open and close can be really irritating.

I can't be the only person that found that irritating...unless I'm the only one that appreciates the efficiency of the XMB in comparison.

Fact? I don't see it. My blades move along pretty quickly. Fraction of a second delay, if not near-instantaneous.

So with installs slower is better, but with dashboard, faster is better. You sony fanboys are confusing yourselves. Anything to appear better than 360 eh? Well, it's still not up to par with the 360. None of the games I own are compatible with trophies. Fail.

Of course, you'd think that with 2.5 years of time to study what did and didn't work with LIVE, they'd be able to create something that builds upon LIVE's approach and does a few things better.

Millennium_King

What? The menus are faster?

Sounds like a problem with your 360. My blades are fast and smooth.

lol. it's not a problem with my 360. it's that the design of the blades means they take ~1 second or 2 to open. there is no such delay on the XMB. It moves as fast as you can click. Time saved. While remaining smooth.

It's not even a debate. that's a simple fact.

What about the time wasted from installs? What I'm trying to say is your argument makes no sense whatsoever.

lol. what do game installs that I do once have to do with anything at all?

My argument...there is no argument. I presented a fact: that I will be able to access my Trophies and subsequent details faster on the XMB than on XBL.

Why is that so difficult for you to grasp.

Sure, you could also say that the 360 version of some multiplat games will load up faster the first time you play because there is no install. That is also not a debate. It's a simple fact; and one that some might not like becuase nothing bad can be said about a fanboy's system. Still doesn't change the fact that at least ONE TIME, the 360 will load a game faster than a PS3.

And there is also no way around the fact that I'll be able to do things in-game faster on the PS3 than on the 360.

Blades look cool and work well, but the time required to navigate them, open and close them is much longer than the time required on the XMB.

Fact; not opinion.

I think I'll go unlock a GTA IV achievement. Say goodbye to 25,580 and say hello to 25,610.

Oh boy! Seems like a have a design flaw with my 360 too! Me and DV must have bought our 360s at the same time, same store!

There is a delay in the transaction of moving, buddy. Don't lie to yourself.

So with installs slower is better, but with dashboard, faster is better. You sony fanboys are confusing yourselves. Anything to appear better than 360 eh? Well, it's still not up to par with the 360. None of the games I own are compatible with trophies. Fail. Millennium_King

DMC4 is I think. I did not really like the game so I did not pay much attention. Is MGS4? I think it is. I collected some trophies for my first play through I think, I am still on my second.

I rented BF:BC (which I expected to hate because I love BF 2 and such on the PC but it is a really fun game) and I think it has trophies.

It is still not as nice as having had every 360 game from launch include them but there are games that sport them already.

 Grasp for straws much?

And keep in mind that MS introduced this into gaming 2+ years ago, with Sony copying

 You can just as easily say Microsoft copied Sony by making a console.

MS has copied every company in its course of business. They are not as "innovative" as they want you to believe.

that is exactly why leveling up is better. 25,610 means nothing from 25,580.....

and yes as DV said...in-game 360 blades are slow and laggy as hell.

In efficiency, I still prefer the 360's blades to the XMB. Its just easier to navigate to me. But any improvement for PSN is great news to me.

GTA 4 has some really fun achievements. I have rolled a car 4 times so often I want to pull my hair out because I can never get that fifth roll though.

Warhawk.....and every game from this point on will most likely implement it. Is this really going to be a knock on Sonys addition? First it was LOL SONY DOESNT HAVE ACHIEVEMENTS...now its LOL THEYRE NOT SUPPORTED BY CURRENT GAMES UNLESS THEYRE PATCHED. Point is they got the system in place for now and the future.

I think whats going in there mind is that

Free >>>>> Paying

That sums it up.

Coyo7e

You do not need XBL gold to have gamer points. I let my XBL account expire for now and I can still see my friends online and I still like gamer points.

Im talking about the overall exprience. Its offers these things that are free to things that cost money on XBL (Gold). Im not judging anyone for purchasing it, just that the service cost gamers money when the competion is doing it for free. Now I know people would say well it has chatting and it keeps stats of others and all that, I don't know someone enlighten me, but when it comes down to it all I want is the knitty gritty which is playing online and maybe sometimes voice chat.

Could it be that maybe, jsut maybe, no one has data yet and that is the reason it is so fast in the video?

Regardless, this is quite a minor point, if true at all...

Fact? I don't see it. My blades move along pretty quickly. Fraction of a second delay, if not near-instantaneous.

VoodooHak

~1 at least. You're talking to someone that has owned 2 and has had 5 come through my household. I know for damn sure that when you push a button to open a blade, it'll take ~1 second for the animation to complete. maybe more if it studders or hesitates.

There is no such delay on the XMB. Do you have a PS3? It's obvious that the 360's UI is clunkier and takes just a little more time to navigate than XMB.

For example, if you were sitting on the base blade of the 360 (no game being played) and I was sitting on the XMB (no game being played) and we raced to see who could get into the music player, find and begin playing "Kiss from a Rose" by Seal amongst 300 artists...the PS3 would win by a few seconds. less clicks, fewer animations.

my only point is the XMB allows me to do these things *faster*. If faster is no longer a good thing, I don't know what world I'm living in.

So with installs slower is better, but with dashboard, faster is better. You sony fanboys are confusing yourselves. Anything to appear better than 360 eh? Well, it's still not up to par with the 360. None of the games I own are compatible with trophies. Fail. Millennium_King
I don't even know what convoluted point you're trying to make anymore.

Installs are a good thing because after the install is done, the game is able to load assets faster. a HDD is FASTER than a CD/DVD/BR disc when it comes to access times. that's why the Xbox was able to do some things it could do; it had a HDD that games could cache to. The 360 does not.

And why would you compare something that you do one time for a game (except for MGS4) to something you have to use and deal with every time you want to do something on a console?

it doesn't even make sense.

That was such a lame brained comment that guy made. A score is a score no matter how you quantify it. When you roll over another 100, or 1000, it is fun and satisfying.

He suggested they were slow, not slow and laggy as hell.

Good lord, "that is why leveling up is better" get real.
