Here is a great little article that everyone should take 10 minutes to read about what each system has to offer in a straight-forward manner.

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/the-state-of-hd-dvd/the-state-of-hd-dvd-330684.php

When I compared Warner's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix discs, the Blu-ray edition in a PS3 and the HD DVD in an Xbox 360, the differences were startling. Never mind that the HD DVD has an entire online component that the Blu-ray can't yet implement, with features such as mobile downloads and user-organized live screenings. Never mind that you could watch the entire HD DVD with pop-up actor-commentary windows on screen-if Warner had implemented this in the Harry Potter Blu-ray, it would have been compatible with exactly one currently shipping Blu-ray player.

The surprising thing was, even when you compared the exact same experiences, the HD DVD behaved much better. Every so often an icon appears in the top left corner of the screen, indicating a behind-the-scenes featurette about that particular scene. On the HD DVD, you click it, watch what you want to, then click Enter again to return to the point you left off in the main movie. With the Blu-ray, the system had no way of returning you to the movie; it could only dump you in the featurette menu, where you were stuck watching more of those. Sure, these problems could be Warner's programmers, and not a format issue, but Warner is going for as similar an experience on both, and it clearly can't do everything on Blu-ray that it can on HD DVD. Just have a look at the back of each disc.

Blu-ray has specifications for picture-in-picture, but to date, only one Blu-ray player that has shipped, the Panasonic DMP-BD30, will be able to handle the discs when they start making their way to stores in early 2008. Except for some rumblings from Daewoo, nobody has promised an internet-connected Blu-ray player, while all HD DVD players can.

Blu-ray 1.1 specification is coming out this month to PS3 and adds these features as well. As a technology I'll take the higher capacity disks, higher quality audio and scratchproof disks of Blu-ray over the dying format HD-DVD anyday.

Ahhh remember way back when and games was the most important part of a game console. I can not tell you how sick I am of hearing about movie formates.

Who cares about deleted scenes and all this other crap? As long as the real movie plays and looks good, who cares about deleted scenes and commentaries?

I have Netflix and was given the choice of getting either the BR or HD-DVD versions of movies if they are available. I picked HD-DVD over BR for one reason.

The PS3 doesn't have an IR receiver so I would have to watch the movies using the Sixaxis. I refuse to buy the blue tooth remote control because I already have a Logitech Universal Remote that I run EVERYTHING (but the PS3) with.

So not only is my PS3 not functioning as a game machine very often, but it's not even being used to watch movies.

I'd probably say ps3, because blu ray seems to be the better format for now; but that's basically because blu ray is the only reason anybody would even give ps3 a second chance, because it's a dvd player, not a games machine Wii60 FTW

360+HD DVD is more expensive than the Playstation 3 as a Blu Ray player. PS3 also comes with the free Blu Ray deal and Spider Man 3 on Blu Ray.

Moreover, you don't absolutely need a hard drive and the damned thing's internal.

Your link doesn't deal with the Xbox 360 versus Playstation 3 as HD movie players, it deals with standalone players, which is an entirely different market proposition. Moreover, it has almost nothing to do with this forum.

Additionally, Blu Ray still has the strongest exclusive and multiplat studio support.

Question: Exactly how many HD-DVD's have you watched to date? Have you even exercised the Blu Ray to HD-DVD swap once on Netflix? Oh, right, there's no such thing.

When you sign up, you either pick HD-DVD or Blu Ray. You have no way of knowing how many more or how many less videos are available on either format, and therefore, you've already lost half the argument.

And instead of complaining about the PS3 not having an IR receiver, how about you recognize the fact that practically any Blu Ray or USB enabled device will run on the damn thing. Moreover, you don't need to put a proprietary hard drive in it because you can fit any 2.5" hard drive in there and have it be 100% compatible.

And at least you can use the controller to watch the movies. If you'd quit being a baby about it and just make it happen you probably would find no reason to complain. It's wireless and it has the exact functionality of the Blu Ray remote (which I have) minus a few extra buttons which are essentially unneeded anyway.

What does that have to do with this video game forum?

And who uses their game console for movies? You're just wearing out the disc drive faster, and the players usually arent' as good as the stand alones.

As a movie player, the ps3 is worlds ahead.

1. you can hear the movie over the sound of the machine

2. the upscaler is fantastic, whereas its non-existent on the 360

3. the 360 doesnt actually play HD-DVD. The extra drive does, which is just another add-on i thought lemmings dont need, and dont factor into the 360.

Blu-Ray to HD-DVD swap? What are you talking about. I don't "exercise" anything with it. They just send the HD version if it's available over the DVD version, but you have to choose HD-DVD or Blu-Ray as your HD format. You can't do both. I just don't see how this looses me half the argument.

Any Blu-Ray or USB device run on the PS3? Well that does me a lot of good considering my universal remote uses neither or those methods to communicate. Good job champ.

I have every right to complain about the lack of a remote. I don't want to use the Sixaxis to watch movies. I bought a Universal Remote to control EVERYTHING for a reason. Not so I could add another controller to the mix. Sony claims to have created the ultimate media center device, but they skipped out on a $2 part for a $600 machine. It's absurd.

I just love the fact that I took my PS3 out ofa single box and set it up and waaalllaaa I had a top of the line Blu-Ray player that happens to play DVD's at a beautiful upscaled resolution and plays several other entertainment mediums. And wow it plays all my games of the past, present, and the future for several more years. As for wireless connection it's so simple with the built in wifi, and the power supply being built in makes things even easier to set up without a bunch of things hanging from everywhere to get close to the same thing. As for the IR remote after using the Blu-Tooth remote and controller the IR just feels like old technology, because any slight interference will mess up the signal.

Yeah when I get my hdtv next year I might pick up a PS3 version Blu Ray movie player and who knows, maybe I'll get a game for my new Blu Ray movie player if they ever decide to make any.

Did you get that from a Sony Press release or something? And no, you had to buy an extra cable to get upscaled resolutions. Did you forget that part of the deal? I'm just stunned that you are using the built in power supply as a "feature" point. A bit of a stretch on that one isn't it?

It's kind of funny that Sony actually ADDED the IR receiver to the PS2 after a few model revisions. They made the right decision back then. Hell, even my PSP has an IR Port.

Opinions are a wonderful thing. SO I take it you have asked every single PS3 owner if that is true and all of them agreed? Highly doubt that

well you must buy an add on to be able to watch HD videos on the 360, so the ps3 wins already.

nicenator

Too bad the actualy movies are worlds behind.

First it was the codex

Then it was the content

Now it's which version of Java is enabled or not
