Virtual prizes are a more tangible version of XBL's achievement points. 3D avatars realized in PSHome make Nintendo's Miis look shallow. - GDC07
WHY?
Because of PSHome's Trophy System that awards players achievement trophies ranging from figurines, artwork, clothing, and costumes - PS3 will become the best home of all multiplats. Also, specific games and blu-ray movies only need to be used on your PS3 to unlock a certain trophy.
ADVANTAGE:
Already, players spend hours unlocking Xbox Achievement Points for rank and pride within the online community. But points are just that; they represent a number, not experiences. People competing over "who has the larger number" should be a thing of the past.
Imagine completing a PSHome Achievement to unlock a dragon statue from Lair or a GTAIV sweatshirt for your PSHome avatar - the possibilities transcend mere points.
Who needs a Gamer Tag when you have a personalized PSHome Hall of Fame? Uploading videos/pictures from the harddrive and being able to put them in TVs/showcases is a huge step in showing all of the people who visit your Hall of Fame what kind of gamer you are.
FREE:
PSHome is free to download and use. For XBL you have to pay. Both PSHome and XBL have advertisements and online gaming - yet PSHome is free.
If you want to buy designer brand clothes, furniture, or a bigger apartment the options are available for you to make premium purchases but the service, avatar creation, apartment and hall of fame space is free.
You could designate your apartment to be your SOCOM clan hall, full of pics from your harddrive and videos on your TVs of your clan's deathmatches. Or... you could decorate your apartment to be a Final Fantasy shrine, and fill it full of Final Fantasy pictures and videos while playing uploaded Final Fantasy music - then give private invitation to your friends or other Final Fantasy fans.
This is a great approach to community, from hardcore to casuals, and it's only in beta so we can expect the evolution of PSHome to get even better.
DISADVANTAGE:
Unlike XBL, in PSHome you have to go through the lobby system in order to join games or make private games. As a subscriber to XBL, which I think is simple to use and fast, PSHome might be a bit slow in it's game matching. This is an area that Sony needs to work on so that when games like Warhawk come out, people can just login to PSN and play.
Unlike Miis, in PSHome our avatars don't seem to be used in any games - yet. Sony should recognize that people like to use their avatars in games, just like the Miis, and perhaps in future development, we can see our PSHome avatars used in products like SingStar or whatever.
CONCLUSION:
PS3 owners had nothing like Miis or XBL until PSHome was announced.
PS3 really needed PSHome, not only for an online gaming interface, but something to compete against the 360's point system and the Wii's Miis. Sony really played its secret card well and PSHome has heads turning - let's hope it's an ace.
