does this mean PS4 will have 4K out of gate?
Does this mean 4K game is next generation?

does this mean PS4 will have 4K out of gate?I don't see why not, but the next Playstation could always get it in an update as well.r12qi

I suppose this is a means to get support for the next generation of displays. 4ks have been popping up at conventions.
Maybe, won't be used for games though.SaltyMeatballswhen i read the title i almost crapped myslef, then i realized it will only be able to do 4k STILLS! lol so really its pretty useless, still sort of cool i guess but reallly pointless

noob question, whats 4k?
aroxx_ab
4096x2160 resolution. (According to the article)
Hmm ok, i dont see the point of it. All games not even do 1080p/60fps...HDtv not supporting that resolution either :?
good for blu ray though[QUOTE="AndyAlfredo"]

Apparently only for still pictures, so pretty much a useless feature to make it seem better than the competition.

what if it is :O
It won't. 1080p will be the standard for many years to come, so developers will stick to that on PS4.[QUOTE="aroxx_ab"]

4K res will NOT be the res on the next-gen consoles. The performance drop would be just too big. 1080p will be the future standard and that will remain so for quite some time.

good for blu ray though PS3 is not powerful enough to output 4K Blu-Ray. You need a PC for that.It will be the rez for High-End PC Gaming though.4K res will NOT be the res on the next-gen consoles. I'm personally fine with 1080p with good AA and AF. It's not like 4K screens are accessible or spread.

Then consoles will either be the size of a couple of cinderblocks stacked together and cost near $1000 or we'll be taking a real step backwards in graphical detail.
Hope it bodes well for 4k support (at the very least) in the next iteration of consoles, but 1080p is here to stay for quite awhile. And honestly, that's fine, performance hits due to 4k support would be intolerable and it would jack up costs for everyone involved. Still though, 4k is sa-weeeeeeet.
Its just still images, but if it means PS4 can support it in gaming then we're looking at a very pretty next gen.

PS4 games won't run in 4K, I can guarantee you that. It could only happen if you could somehow connect two consoles together and each would render the graphics. It was said that GT5 will support connecting four PS3s for a ultra-high res, but it didn't happen as far as I know.

4k STILL IMAGES.
So, if you take a picture on your future 4k camera, the PS3 will be able to display it on screen. How exciting, isn't it, TC?
r12qi
if this is base of PS4 which maybe have 4K gaming. yes :P
Huh??? Displaying 4K images is not worth a press release. A lot of devices can "open" 4k images. For instance, PC's have been able to do so for at least 10-15 years. I'm sure my 6 year old laptop can open 16K images (although it will be slow). The trick is having a display device that can natively display the image. Its to allow the PS3 to work natively for still images with Sonys range of 4K projectors. If you need to ask the price of a 4K projector you cant afford one, the sxrt400 comes in at around $70,000 and if you want 3D you need a convertor or a second 4K projector!
[QUOTE="foxhound_fox"]So Sony is still trying to sell the myth that hardware power can be added via firmware upgrades?cabose38
To be fair they did OC the PSP with a firmware update.
You could do that 4 years ago on custom firmware. Sony didn't really do anything.
