Maybe. The price would've been lower which would've helped sales. But considering how bad Sony is doing right now, they really need all the help they can get.

Had Sony made Blu-Ray and WiFi optional to lower the console's price significantly they would have a much easier time recapturing the PS2 userbase, but they miscalculated and handed it to Nintendo.

No. Many people got it to save $400 on a Blu-Ray player.

Equally many people haven't brought it because they have no need for a blue ray player and thats why it costs so much.

Wow. You're not very smart.

If the PS3 was $400 with no Blu-ray, it'd be flying off the shelves.

You do realise that the games are blu-ray as well right? If you strip the PS3 of it's blu-ray it's basically a PS2

edit: ...you know what I mean

No, that would just make it a watered-down carbon copy of the 360.

And I'm sure just as many people (if not more) have not bought it because it's a $600 console.

Honestly, anyone who voted "No" is an imbecile.

Sony priced themselves out of the market with that damn Bluray player that only 10% of Americans will put good use to.

Lets be real here. If Ps3 had no Blu-Ray, it would cost around $400. With that price and power of the playstation brand it would be selling better than Wii and the 360 sales would be like 100K a month at this point.

and the PS3 has differentiated itself out of the biggest market.

it would be an updated ps2 if it without the whole blu-ray experience/ blu-ray discs. The biggest competitor of the ps3 right now is the ps2 because they still have great games (FFXII, GOW2, Odin Sphere, etc) but ps3 is protected for the future. It will be #1 in the end

I don't care. I wouldn't have bought it without Bluray.

Considering that the average person probably does not even know what Blu-Ray is and cannot afford a $600 console. Seriously, just walk through your local mall and survey people with the question "What is Blu-Ray?". I bet 75% of them will not know what you are talking about. The exclusion of Blu-Ray would have made ps3 another ps2.

I don't care what other people want. I wanted a Bluray player.  I doubt I'm in line with the majority but the majority of people in this country also like crap like Nsync and American Idol.

And the PS2 sold like crazy which was pretty much an update of PS1 which sold like crazy.

This thread isn't about what you want, it's about whether the PS3 would be more successful if Blu-ray were optional.

Thats nice, but the point of this thread is if the Ps3 would be selling better without blu-ray. Isn't it?

Yes because gamers don't care.  Movie buffs want it.  And this is *suposed* to be a gaming system.

You still have no killer games.....so no it probably wouldn't be in a better position at this point of time.  Now in the 4th qtr that would change with good software titles.  But face the facts, they are going to lower the price this year and next year so it's pointless to guess what PS3 would have done without all those highprice accessories.  My prediction is sometime next year the PS3 will be $400 or below.

Had the PS3 not had Blu-Ray and been $400 I would have been more inclined to buy right away as opposed to waiting a few years to pick one up.
