I let my PS3 update last week and restarted the system and now it won't play any of my games! The error I'm getting is:

"An error occurred during the start operation. 80010514"

My friend updated his yesterday and is reporting getting the same error. Initial googling on it shows that I need to send my box to Sony to have it fixed but I do not want to have to do that - thats why i got rid of my 360! Anyone know how to get my PS3 working again?

You just need to reset it. Now having said this, I don't know how to do that. Someone on here can direct you how to do it. Assuming this is true.

Reformat your HDD and reset your system to default settings. Save your game saves to a flashdrive or PSP first.

Sweet. Not happened to me, but good to know. Also thought it was cool I could save my game data to my PSP. Compatibility FTW!!!

Your problems can be fixed by repeatedly hitting yourself in the forehead with a claw hammer.

How would the PS3 affect the HDD? Even if the PS3 was bad you could use a SATA controller, connect it to your PC and get your gamesaves... Trolls are so sad sometimes.

It can mess up the formating if you do what it tells you not to do - shut off your PS3 during an update :|

Cows have either bought a 360 and it broke down on them 16 times, or they have a friend that has been though 20 of them.

In other words, cows make alternate accounts, and post fake RROD stories all of the time.

BOGUS. that error code does not relate to the problem your having with COD4. btw, this is not the place for a thread like this, you're just trying to start another petty argument.

these PS3 haters are trying to fabricate stories of error codes they dont know the definition of. Each error code has a definition and it usually only means one thing. 80010514 means improper download. like downloading something your not supposed to be downloading. If you use the 'update' from the XMB to automatically update your software via the internet, there won't be any problems.

Why don't you try to get the facts straight? The problem is not that big of a deal..but your post is ignorant at best...

The error code is actually one of two things, a) a faulty sector on the internal hard drive, or b) a faulty installation of software/firmware, both iterations actually coincide with eachother. If the hard drive suffers a faulty sector ( a section of damaged space on the drive that data may have been written to that no longer is readable), an installation may still be processed, and even work, but the error can cause some serious side effects, such as option b. If your PS3 has installed an item incorrectly, including firmware, it is in high risk of receiving this error.

'ignorant' was you proving me right, and trying to trash me for it. The internal hard drive wouldnt be having issues if poop wasn't downloaded to it. let me splain sumthin: you download something, it goes to your hard drive. get it? so if you download an incompatible update for example, its going to corrupt your hard drive. thanks!
