The PS3 debuted in early 05 (come on, it should have knowing how long the PS2 has been out for) with the same DVD format at a cheaper price and have slowly overtime released an external Bluray player. (for those who want one)...buy now, the support by devs would have been overwhelming as with any console when launching before the competition.

all i'm saying is, the PS3 had MORE of a reason to come out first..but Sony seemed more focus on the MEDIA side of things. Seeing how the DVD format pushed the PS2 in sales, them thinking as would the bluray for PS3, but it did more damage than good in the beginning. (due to the fact that bluray format was still young so prices were HIGHER)

thoughts?

I'd say it would have won if Ps3 owners used it for more then a movie player, and purchased games. (Just read the latest npd, and got angered again)

Early 05? With God of War coming out and so many other games? 04 - 05 was ps2's prime imo. You dont release a new console in the old one's prime, thats terrible business sense.

I think its the higher price-tag thats keeping the PS3 from selling more than its competition... I believe that should the PS3's price be round USD200 with the current games library, upcoming titles, being a blu-ray player & also offering a good free online service, it would have probably sold 3 x as much during this period of time..

The only reason why less people are buying PS3 is just because its expensive... sometimes fanboys/haters forget that....

With the exception of tastes in gaming i see no other reason why someone wouldnt prefare getting the PS3 if its price was close to its competition..

- Great exclusives & Great Multiplats already available + others coming up / - Free online service / - Reliable hardware / - HDD in all models / - Blu-ray Player / - Internet browser / - Good online store etc etc (thats one amazing package for a console)

It's what I'm basically saying, Bluray was the reason for the high price tag, and knowing how so far this generation the DVD format can still keep up, it was kinda too early. It worked with the PS2 because when it was released, the dvd format was already stable and a big thing. but, yeh...would have been real interesting tho.

I don't know if PS3 would sell more or not If there were no Bluray in it.

But I know that there was a huge difference between DVD and VHS. On the other hand, there is a difference between DVD and Bluray but not huge. I think It was the main reason for quick adoption of DVD.

Also I had PS2 and DVD was one of the major reasons for buying PS2. Same thing is with PS3, if there was no Bluray I don't know when I would enter HD world. Probably I wouldn't enter at all.

Regarding PS1, I never had one. I was OK with Sega and Nintendo

so basically you think Blu-ray had to be introduced as some sort of add-on to the PS3... but having DVD as the main medium for games on PS3?? mmm guess that would probably resulted in Sony releasing the PS3 at a much cheaper price... problem is sony lost its focus on the Playstation brand since as its name suggests is all about playing (games), and they focvused more on pushing the new HD medium (blu-ray) at all costs... therefore the Playstation brand has become more of a multi-tasking media device for Sony rather than purely a console/gaming brand...

Ps3's sales are dead because you can get a bluray player for $150 now, no need to shell out $399 for one that plays some games.

Realistically, it's all price, bluray was a good idea, the machine itself is fantastic, but, it's over priced, and you get milked every step of that way (example, it's the only bluray player on the market that doesn't come with an HDMI cable or at least composite cables).

If you look back at the PS1 and PS2...they always were a multi-tasking media hub, from CD music, DVD movies, USB devices, etc....thats fine, IMO. Like i said, a bluray addon would have been much better, expecially if they released it when it was becoming more standard, sony could have still supported it. This way it can please everyone.

i can agree with that, but you always had sony focusing on games (during PS1 & PS2), even when talking in conferences or at various games shows their attention was centred on games... with the PS3 they changed and they always been busy talking about its a blu-ray player first and PS3 being the centre of the living room with its various media capabilites.... dont get me wrong i am a happy PS3 owner and have round 35 games on it, so as long as games keep coming i am happy...

different times, the PS1 PS2's competition wasn't THAT great, when you look back...a lot supported sony and the situation was different....unlike now, Sony feel the need to justify bluray, especially since its still young, so a lot of focus is there, like i said, with the PS2 the dvd format was already proven and stable..its why it help push the PS2 sales a lot. Sony feel the heat from MS and since MS have great support this gen (thanks to there head start) sony need to do more than just games..to stick out. They want to be the FULL media centre and have it the PS3 do all. Which is has become a problem, IMO. then again, Sony are thinking of the future, if they want the PS3 to last like the PS2 has, bluray was a good choise..i spose. Make sense.

I agree, the ULTIMATE MEDIA CENTER *echos* was Sonys focus right from the beginning literally trying to eliminate entertainment center's, PC's, and console competition, all in fell swoop, but could never have foreen the economic sh*t storm that eventually happened. Which I have said this before but it seems to me the ONLY reason Sony's "losing" is because of just plain ole bad timing....shame really.
