Time to face the facts folks the Blueray player on the PS3 is simply to slow for video gaming.  So much so that many of the games requre you to install parts of the game onto the hard drive before playing.  Game after game we read about how the load times are rediculous on the PS3 version as opposed to the 360 or PC versions.

Fear just got released and here are IGN's comments:

Load times are also a little bit of ridiculous tossed into this over-the-top game. As you move between chapter sections, the game will recap your upcoming objectives and load the next part of the mission. In the beginning, you start to think the load times are a bit too long, but they only get worse and most rank somewhere between thirty seconds and a minute. Granted, you won't have to worry about a load until the next section of the game, but the creeping load bar is going to upset folks who remember playing and loading F.E.A.R. seamlessly on the PC and the Xbox 360.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/782/782476p1.html

A MINUTE LOAD TIME IS REDICULOUS!  The first minute load time I encountered I would probably put the control down and never play the game again.  Time to own up Cows your system has some issues.

Not only is it slow for playing games, it's a second rate BluRay player.  Long load times, and no Java Applet support, already outdated by new players.

I'm not stating opion.  The Blueray player is slower then the 360's DVD.  I have no interest to go look for the stats but it has a much slower transfer rate.

I'm simply pointing out that a number of developers are struggling with the PS3 due to hardware and the Blueray is a big part of that (In addition to the cell and a lack of ram).  Currently Blueray is no a very effective solution for gaming due to the speed.  Maybe in a few years the will make faster BLueray players but that doesn't help the current PS3 owners.

Wait i think bluray players are actually very quick. I think the model in the PS3 version might be a bit dated compared to the new ones. But yeah bluray will not be needed for games, people just wont stop with that. Next gen probably systems will need to upgrade, but this gen they will be fine.

Standard harddrive does. Many developers can copy what oblivion to get faster choice. I will agree that Blu Ray's drive is slow (clocking at 2x fyi). But i dont really need anything faster for moves and if the harddrive is used like in obivilon i wont need it for gaming either.

Quit citing Ubisoft's half assed pos ports as the end all source for PS3's hardware capabilities. It's getting very very old.

In a few years most 360 games are going to require the HDD. Like in PC games you can't play a game if you don't meet the requirements.

And since the 360 version's load times are longer and the game doesn't run as smooth, the 360 version would have benefited from data duplication too.

PS: As far as I know not every PS3 game uses the HDD to load faster. And apparently F.E.A.R is one of them.

Exactly the opposite.  I don't want to have to install every game I get.  If I wanted to do that I would use my computer.  Plus the hard drives on the PS3 versions are relitivly small and installing every game you get will quickly eat up that space.

Yeah, but why would you install every game you get? :? Most games don't require install.

Does Oblivion PS3 require installation? I don't know, I have the 360 one.

that is why sometimes i say, cows cant brag about ps3 having 60 gb,because technically, their 60 gb hard drive will get full earlier than the 360 20 gb if they have to download parrt of their games on the hard drive just fro a fast load time.

No, I am saying that you have to eat up around 10% of your PS3 HDD space, just for one game, just to get slightly better load times.  Now, that is quite worrysome.  And if you have the 20gb version, WOW, the works out to be over 22% of your HDD space just to get slightly better load times. (This takes in account of the PS3 operating system minus total space)

I don't believe it's required, but load time will be slower otherwise.

I have also heard that they had to duplicate data on the Bluray disk because of the slow speed of the Drive.  So i guess that extra storage space is needed for the BluRay's slow data transfer speed.

2 x 8800gtx in sli can already do that so what your saying is you want your console to be up with pc like it was early last year?

funny how optical drives have yet to catch up with hard drives from 7 years ago in speed, even the slowest laptop drives now cream the optical drives in either console.  x360's drive maxes out @ 22mb/s while your average has a substained transfur rate of 60+mb/s and maximum of over 100mb/s

lol, well if it isn't required, why are you complaining?

The point to be made here is that it seems the 360 version would also have benefited from data duplication and HDD installation. But they may not have taken that route because either:

1) they didn't have time to implement those features

2) DVD9 room may have constrained them; or

3) lack of standard HDD on the Xbox 360 eliminated the last option

So BD drive may be slow, but it seems the 360 would have benefited from the same enhancements, not to mention it suffers from much more serious constraints.

No, I am saying that you have to eat up around 10% of your PS3 HDD space, just for one game, just to get slightly better load times. Now, that is quite worrysome. And if you have the 20gb version, WOW, the works out to be over 22% of your HDD space just to get slightly better load times. (This takes in account of the PS3 operating system minus total space)

fuzzysquash

Is the install required for the PS3 version?

Again, I only have the 360 version.

I don't believe it's required, but load time will be slower otherwise.

I have also heard that they had to duplicate data on the Bluray disk because of the slow speed of the Drive. So i guess that extra storage space is needed for the BluRay's slow data transfer speed.

lol, well if it isn't required, why are you complaining?

The point to be made here is that it seems the 360 version would also have benefited from data duplication and HDD installation. But they may not have taken that route because either:

1) they didn't have time to implement those features

2) DVD9 room may have constrained them; or

3) lack of standard HDD on the Xbox 360 eliminated the last option

So BD drive may be slow, but it seems the 360 would have benefited from the same enhancements, not to mention it suffers from much more serious constraints.

data duplication is purely to get around slow load times off the disk. The 360 drive can grab any data off the disk as fast as you and your horse can run across the landscape in Oblivion. It IS jerky, but it is do-able. So data duplication would serve no purpose on the 360 at all. The PS3 Blu Ray drive simply cannot get the data quick enough, for 2 reasons. 1, it is slower, and 2 it has a bigger area (50 gig?) to search through to find the data. Having said that, the 360 dvd drive is the worst peice of techno crapola on plnet earth and if it was a horse, I would shoot it. I got rid of oblivion as soon as I got 1000 points, I could not take the noise of that drive a moment longer when trying to play that game.

Why are load times for Oblivion shorter for the PS3?

dont you have to download some of the oblivion game to your hard drive to make it load faster i msure if you didnt download that to the hard drive it wouldnt load as fast

cause you dump about 4 gb of data on the Sony HDD.

"/thread" LOL

The fact that the 360 doesn't come with a standard HDD so developers can't take advantage of that feature is not a good thing, dude.

We are using consoles not pc's. The HDDs on the PS3 and 360 should be used for DL content, misc files and games saves, not as a huge paging file!!! Think about this, if and when the PS3 finally gets up to speed a gamer with 10 or more games would have to think about a alternate means to save content because their HDD would be filled with just paging files only....Now that fact is what is truely sad.

Game On....

one thing... 50gig disks= very big games=last longer=happy gamerpiemister

Wrong!!! 50gb=Lazy devs=larger installs onto HDD=same amount of game time with no advantages over the competition.

But since its a Sony, I guess that still equals "Happy Gamer"  :?

hmm what should I add...

Yeah, im stuck on that one myself.

Either way, FEAR was poor on consoles, 360 or PS3. It should be enjoyed on the PC.

Yo're wrong regarding the PS3 BD drive speed.

Read mechanism:1x@36Mb/s & 2x@72Mb/s

If you compare to a DVD drive like the XBox 360 it is faster:

12x@15.9Mb/s and 16x@21.2Mb/s

As for the comment stating the PS3 was a slow and bad BD player, you're also wrong: http://ultimateavmag.com/hddiscplayers/1206ps3blu/

On page 2:

"The PS3 also rocks with startup speed, disc load speed and disc access during playback. In other words, it's ergonomically very Sony. Inserting discs with the PS3 powered down, it took less than ten seconds, at most, to boot to the menu of either a DVD or a 50GB BD, either of which the PS3 does automatically. ...

This ergonomic performance is a far cry from the more expensive Samsung BD-P1000 standalone BD player, which still takes around 30 seconds to load a BD menu, or the Toshiba first-gen HD DVD players, which can take closer to a minute to load a disc. ..."

On page 3:

"The PS3 is just as fast and agile with the BD on-screen menus that come up while the movie runs, and chapter skips and scanning are as fast as any DVD player I've ever used- instantaneous, even with 50GB BDs. Again, this is far superior to the speed of the Samsung or Toshiba players, but also better again than Sony BDP-S1. And so far our PS3 hasn't frozen once during movie playback (which the Toshiba HD-XA1 has done far too many times), and thus far I've encountered more odd little glitches in the few days I've spent with the BDP-S1 than in the weeks I've spent with the PS3. ...

... the PS3 unequivocally flies, even with 1080p video and six channels of uncompressed PCM on tap. So far it is the only BD player I've seen that achieves the level of speed and stability we've enjoyed with DVD players for years, and takes it to the next-gen level."

As for Java applet support, well the PS3 has an upgradable firmware, so it's not difficult for them to add new features to it's BD player.

Look for information before stating your misinformed opinion as fact. It's not that hard.

PS: I own an XBox 360 Premium and a PS3 60GB.

lol, that oblivion also uses 4gb of ps3 harddrive disk space to speed up load times

lol, that I could take out the trash, or make a sandwich and eat it during a signle load time on the 360 version of Oblivion.

Would you like to provide a link to that info?  Because I'm pretty sure you got your bits and bytes messed up

PS3 = 2x BR drive = 72Mbits = 9Mbytes/s

X360 = 16x DVD drive = 169Mbits = 21.2Mbytes/s
