The real reason why the PS3 is selling poorly is because of Price.. sony should be glad actually this is the only problem because the Price is always the one thing about your product that you can lower and change unlike having bad hardware, bad line up of games etc etc.. Again the PS3 has great games, now a very solid online service, blu ray is picking up and has all the right features a next gen console needs, all they need to do is lower the price and they will be set.. The reason i dont think the PS3 is a failure and never was, is because its only real problem was the price.. Unlike past consoles that failed such as the Virtual Boy for example those failed because they where a gimmick and a very bad one.. I know a lot of people that like the PS3 and really want one but its just still expensive for them to buy..

Sony should look on the bright side and see that ATLEAST their biggest problem can be fixed

I personally am much happier now with my PS3 then I was a full year ago when I first got it. Games have really become solid even if they dont rack up huge amounts of money.

expect a Valhalla 65 nm single chip for 360, rather then 2 65nm chips. 50% chip cost reduction. Might lead to a $50 price cut, 360 slim, and ownage. ALso more games for 360. 09 is gonna be awesomer for 360.

No, it's anything but easy. The PS3 is already a financial blackhole priced as it is. Sony has yet to make a single cent off of the thing. So how can they even consider dropping the price?

The prices aren't dropping as quickly as you think they might be. They had the $200 price-cut last year and that put them DEEEEEEEEEP down in R&D and another price cut, at least now would kill them.

Maybe they are saying that to get those fence sitters off the fence and buy a 360. Its common sense hat the Valhalla design will cut costs.

Couple that with a 09 PS3 price drop.......and you got the recipe for a $50 360 price cut next holiday.

I agree that price is the only problem they have right now.....but that is a problem that can't be fixed easily. Sony has been able to offset the game divisions losses for the past two years with huge sales from their eletronics division (TV's, video cameras, ect..). With the world economy basically tanking, that division is already seeing bad times. Circuit City, bankrupt. Best Buy, they are saying they have NEVER seen such bad conditions. Considering these are the locations where you would expect a lot of Sony product to sale.......Sony is in trouble if they cut the price of the PS3 (this year at least) and lose another billion.

Overall they have looked at the situation and decided to keep the price high until they can cut the manufacturing cost, which I'm told will be early next year. So right after Killzone 2 releases you might actually see a price cut. Until then, the problem is real and it's going to be a huge factor this holiday season.....that being the PS3 is way to expensive and most will not be able to afford it.

2006, The Xbox 360 was hot, I was like... Its tempting to get one, But nahhhh I'll wait for the PS3. I left it til Mid 2007, Got a PS3. Had Motorstorm with it and thats it. Waited till 2008, And now its November, I got some amazing titles, and still am glad I didnt choose an Xbox. 360 users chose the Xbox because they wanted a Next Gen, knowing full well if they didn't buy one, They would have a PS3 now. So they need to stop going on about prices. Also, The Blu-Ray player will go down, Then so will the PS3. Then you will see the PS3 as the top seller, I mean........ Fifa 09 already sold one million copies.. ON THE PS3! Who thought they would go plat on the PS3 not xbox? I didnt... Its already showing the PS3 is rising, Just give it till January.

I dont' disagree with your statement except for it being the "only" thing. Economic conditions trump everything at this point. My guess is if the economic conditions were the same as last year, Sony would have cut the PS3 in Oct or Nov. Right now they just can't afford it even if the "inept management" decided to do it.

There are 3 problems:

1) price, get it to £200 and that will kickstart its momentum

2) lack of signature title, they dont have one, at the moment. They just have a bunch of great games, they need something they can hype to the high heavens like gears 2 or halo. They should try to make KZ2 that game

3) marketing: sony needs to market it towards families, not just hardcore gamers. They need to show it as a family media system, then it will sell at christmas.

PS3 is well worth the money. I got the 80 GB MGS4 bundle with Dual Shock 3 and Backwards compatibility. Very good system and good competitor to 360. It helps that you save a lot of money by not having to pay for all those 360 acessories (Controller batteries, Live memberships, Wireless internet) and last but not least, you get a blueray player and other great multimedia aspects as well As a slew of great games. Did I mention PS3 has much more reliable hardware than 360? Sure PS3 could use a price drop, but when you consider what you DON'T get with an Xbox 360, it makes logical sense that PS3 is better in the long run. Perhaps if they made a stripped down 40 GB PS3 without backwards compatibility for $299.99, Sony may have a better chance of persuading fence dwellers to pick the better console. But for now, people will have to learn the hard way.

Both the 360 and the PS3 are still to expensive for sales to really start taking off. The game market is growing but people don't want to invest $400 into a console.

I don't price cutting is going to help sony out when they lose money on each console. With the future looking very grim and unpredictable, I'd say it's a risky move to lose even more money in hopes for royalties down the road.

I don't think price is the only problem for Sony and the PS3 this gen.  I mean you can't be too naive to believe just because the PS3 gets cheaper people will automatically buy it.  I mean look at the Wii, it was the cheapest console but it catered the casuals and have lovable games like Mario.  Also look at the 360, it's the cheapest console now but it also have the largest gaming library.

So what about the PS3, sure it could drop it's price to something competitive but they don't have the largest library of games like the 360 and they don't have lovable games like Mario and isn't that casual friendly.  Plus the PS3 have blu ray which mean people that don't have one yet need to buy a HDTV and I think most aren't still comfortable to upgrading their entire entertainment room.

Thans Captain obvious, you don't think all those million dollar CEOs at Sony couldn't figure this out tha they need you to tell them. The reason Sony isn't cutting price is because Sony's hardware cannot allow a price cut without sustaining too much loss. If Sony could afford to sell the PS3 for 199 they would, but they can't because the tech is too expensive to take the hit.

I swear how many of these posts come out every second is insane.

I suppose great management is simply to drops prices everytime people start asking for it. Thank god you don't run Sony. The inept management has managed to sell 17 million units of a console almost twice the price of it's closest rival. If it were up to people like you Sony would be filing for Chapter 11 like Circuit City USA, and soon to be Ford, Chrysler and GM. Just cause you aren't getting cheap PS3 doesn't mean Sony isn't doing good business. Selling products at a loss on a regular basis is not good business.

i don't think you understand what he's getting at.

he's talking about having a MASSIVE market share, and going from first to LAST in terms of that share. Neither the Dreamcast, nor the Virtual Boy, nor the Sege Saturn had a market share anywhere close to Sony's.

Market share basically means what percentage of the total gaming market you control. They take all revenue and earnings and sales data and make these pretty pie charts that split up the market share between the major players. Sony used to have a massive slice of that pie, now they get the tiny piece that's missing some crust :)

I think the same thing happened to Nintendo going from SNES to GameCube. Nobody stays at the top for more than two generations.

True. It's desperate for some RPGs. Xbox is killing with Star Ocean, Last Rem, Tales of Vesp and etc.

Easily? Sony doesnt think so.

And when PS1 and PS2 were ach market leaders.........only to have PS3 come in and be the:

******biggest market share LOSER in the history of video games********

thats a failure buddy.

3picuri3

Didint sega satuen, dreamcast and hell virtual boy die. Doesint that make them the biggest market share losers.

i don't think you understand what he's getting at.

he's talking about having a MASSIVE market share, and going from first to LAST in terms of that share.

Oh ok I think I get it. So was nintendo huge with nes and snes, but lost alot with n64 and the GC.
