PS4 - Incredible engineering

Sony’s engineers were instructed to keep the PS4′s power consumption strictly under 250 watt, and Ootori-san stressed on the importance of that choice. You’d think it was taken to limit the generation of heat, or maybe to simply help us save on our energy bills, but that’s not the primary reason.

Ootori-san explained that 250 watt is the upper limit, by safety regulations, that allows the use of a two prong power cord. By using 250 watt or more the PS4 would have required a three prong power cord, and of course a three pin power inlet on the back of the console. That kind of connector is larger, and would have negatively impacted the miniaturization of the unit.

Every day, I'm impressed at how well designed and thought-out the PS4 is. Why can't Microsoft do this?

I guess they took the watts from the rubber feet and that's why it wobbles.

SONY engineers had a power limit of 250 watt and they still ended up with a much more powerful machine than Microsoft's VCR box. How much power does the Xbone use? 500 watts?

ROFL!!!! No, this is the cheapest console they ever produced in the whole PS line. They cut corners and used off the shelf parts from tigerdirect.com.

The power cord that you marvel about is no different.

Thats weird...My iron is 1200 Watts and it's only a two prong...

To be fair, the Xbox draws power for the console+kinect while putting out less heat and making less noise than the PS4. That sounds like pretty good engineering to me lol

They held back the power because of the form factor? Doesn't seem all that incredible.

Glad to see it's power efficient anyway, though the long term usage remains to be determined.

yeah i highly doubt that is the main reason the try to held power under 250W when they were designing the console ( let alone i have devices with 2 prong that are more than 250W )

PS4 using a three prong power cord wouldn't have bothered me in the least, in fact they're usually better made.

Sony makes nice hardware but software/OS wise they still have a long way to go.

im glad my PC has the same gpu as PS4 but instead it is not underclocked, has all the CUs enabled and consumes 300W, i want my games performance not a tiny pretty case

It's not that the ps4 is incredibly engineered, just that the Xbone is incredibly badly engineered...

The gamecube was incredibly engineered.

It essentially a tablet APU wrapped in a console packaging. If you want to see a technical marvel, look at the tablet technology that the new consoles are based on.

Contrary to popular belief, the X1 is not badly engineered. Whether or not you personally like the console or the way it looks is one thing, but any person who understands engineering understands that the X1 is designed with efficiency in mind.

The X1's cooling design is actually the best way to cool something. The X1 draws in are from both sides and the back, the air is then pushed directly up through the large desktop-like fan that ventilates through the top of the console. They have great airflow coming into a strong fan that is pointed up, and since hot air rises that's ideal. This is what makes the X1 quieter and cooler than the PS4.

That's not to knock the PS4's engineering though, as they did do a very good job considering their small form factor.

At the end of the day, the X1 was meant to be an always online, always running console. They didn't want a RROD all over again and so they chose the simplest and most effective method.

@Crypt_mx: There is one problem with that airflow design though. If the machine is in a TV bench, wich most people will, the heat going out the top won't be ideal. The best and safest way is blowing the heat out the sides or back, since it's more likely people will put things on top of the console or having it in a small TV bench with no overhead.

I think X1 and PS4 are both engineering feats.

I've never wobbled my 2. I only saw them do it on a video. They sit in place & don't move. They don't wobble.

My Xbox 360 never RROD'd. They don't RROD... wait a minute...

No, I'm serious. There's a rubber piece on the bottom in the middle that flattens down after the PS4 sits for about a week. The wobble is very temporary & only if you make it. My 2 don't wobble at all. I can't even force them.

Same goes for the X1.

I'm serious aswell, my PS4 wobbles, it's not an issue at all but it does in fact wobble.

Ps4 is a great game console, it's the most powerful game console this gen but performance wise it's nothing special compared to todays gaming PCs. Heck, a hi-end pc (dual GPUs) from 2010 outperforms the ps4. That has never happen before, that a game console is outperformed by a 3 year older pc. I think the ps4 will have an amazing game library in the future and that's all that counts, but I wouldn't use the word "incredible" about it's hardware.
