Ps4 Pro is old tech, why is it so expensive?

For the GPU and CPU It has in it, no blueray 4k player, isn't it due for a price drop?

It is due for a price drop. Might get it in September.

It's been due for a price drop for ages but it keeps selling well and Sony continues to dominate NPDs and worldwide sales.

They won't permanently drop the price unless they start feeling sales are below expectations. The number one rule of business is to only drop the price of your product as a last resort, if you're still pummeling your competition in sales you do not do a price drop.

Yes. It's competing with the main console for attention of gamers. A majority of gamers would rather buy a console than an expensive peripheral even if that peripheral has good games.

PSVR is absolutely destroying the other VR headsets when it comes to sales but at the end of the day it's competing with the main consoles for the attention of gamers so Sony needs to lower PSVR's price in order to get their attention.

With the PS4, Sony is coasting to NPD victories and worldwide sales dominance every month so they don't feel the need for a price drop.

Of course.......they need to try and lure people away from VR on PC or people thinking of getting in to VR on PC.

Honestly, they should (and probably will) lower the price soon.

PS is in high demand because of its games, but for that, the Slim is more than enough. They need to make the Pro a bit more desirable.

Damn, I do an immediate facepalm when I look at what Nintendo is selling the Switch for.

I've been thinking about getting the Switch since launch but I can't justify the price. Nintendo really needs to lower the Switch's price, I don't care if it's portable or not it's overpriced.

I think it's expensive because it got awesome games

The Switch is not overpriced. It just has high demand and the highest scoring games.

Well Nvidia are probably ripping Nintendo off, then Nintendo are ripping us off. Tegra is so old, seriously down clocked and costs more than a PS4/X1. Nobody with an once of logic can defend that price, their in the same bracket as Apple consumers. Did you know, Apple make a 60% profit on every iPhone X, wouldn't be surprised if the Switch is around that.

Yes the mobile phone manufacturers have huge margins especially on the high end models, that's well known. The consoles however don't, if I remember correctly Switch was around 260 $ to produce. Just like on mobile phones, the SoC is but a fraction of the cost, this is the same for consoles be it xbox/ps4/switch, even if Nvidia cut the SoC price in half you wouldn't see a 100$ drop in Switch price

Nintendo Switch launched just last year, has a hardware production cost of $257, and sells for $300. That's 16% profit margin. You are way off on your cost estimate. Even if they sold at $250 they would have lost money on the hardware for the past year.

The Joy-cons are $45 each to produce compared to the DS4 at $18 and XO pad at $15.

Equilibrium is dictated by what the market is willing to pay for a product, not how much it costs to produce. I would be willing to bet that there is a price drop for the holidays, though.

Half of the highest scoring games you can just get a Wii U which is 1/3 the price.

@quadknight: psvr is reliant on ps4 owners for sales, you need one to use the other.....it's hardly in competition with it.

Honestly, PS4 pro is the best console I bought this gen.

Never buy launch hardware, just don't do it.

For what it is, Pro should definitely be cheaper. Especially now that the X is out.

I was surprised how expensive the Joy-cons are. As a fixed handheld device it could probably sell at sub-$200 pricepoint.

Best thing to do is wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday for a sweet sale on the Pro. (Same goes for Nintendo Switch but the price itself was worth the buy in my opinion)

It's in competition with the PS4 for the gamers' attention just because you need both doesn't change this fact. Those PS4 owners have to decide whether to spend the VR money on PS4 exclusives or PSVR and its own exclusives.

I had to make the same decision myself when I got my PSVR, and I chose to skip some games at the time and wait for them to drop in price because I had used money meant for them on my PSVR and its own games.

When you get a PSVR it's almost like owning another console. It has its own exclusive games that are separate from the PS4's.

They should really just make the Pro the standard model at this point and drop the price.

Maybe when it's time for the next (and probably last) PS4 revision they will do just that, make a "slim pro"and cut it to $299. Would love if they added a UHD drive but unfortunately I highly doubt it. Maybe next gen...

That's a different argument. Deciding to get a game for PSVR or PS4 is not the same as deciding between PSVR and PS4. Income from games goes to Sony whether it's a PSVR or PS4 game ..... we are talking about why PS4 pro hasn't had a price cut, yet PSVR has. I'd say it's pretty obvious that they're trying to encourage sales, not because it's in competition with PS4.

The PS consoles really need to come down another fifty bucks already. It's been five years. You cut the price when things are hot, not when you're forced to.

Because the demand for it is so high, that I've been looking for one, since two months without success!!!

Price is a reaction to product demand and competition just as much as it is manufacturing cost. Sony will lower the Pro price simultaneously with the base price at a time that makes sense to them.

It could be a long time from now. The PS3 went to $299 in 2009 and didn’t officially drop to $199 until 2013 - nearly 7 years after release. With weaker competition this gen, there’s even less pressure to get there.

Maybe we’ll see a more conservative drop to $249/$349 this holiday.
