PS4 is managing to sell close to 120 million units at a $400 price point and the PS2 had the benefit of being a cheap DVD player. I remember at some point PS2 was selling for $99 lol. We never came that close with the PS4. Also, while the PS2 had competition, it didn't have to compete against smartphones and tablets. So what say you, SW? Is PS4's achievement more impressive than the PS2 which has sold at least 160 million units?

Its particularly impressive considering the last official price drop for PS4 was before Switch even a thing and shipped around 1.6 billion software. 1 billion more than Switch currently right now.

I'm pretty sure Sony could have gotten close or maybe even matched the PS2 numbers had they given the ps4 a good price drop a year or two ago.

No. There are a lot more people in the world now than in 2000, there are a lot more middle income people, gaming is more mainstream now. Still impressive but not some insane feat.

True, but PS2 also sold for $99 for a few years. How fast do you thing PS4's would be coming off the shelves if they started selling them at that price?

Sony just needs to discontinue PS4 already and focus on PS5 production. I've never seen a console die so quickly after the release of its successor. Holy crap...

It's certainly PS2-like at this point. Too many variables to decide which is more impressive, to me, but I'm still inclined towards the PS2. Probably around 150 I'd call it for the PS4, but really got nothing concrete to base that on

PS2 sales numbers was in a market when gaming was significantly smaller than it is now. So, the PS4 getting close near the end of its cycle is not impressive.

It’s crazy to think Switch is selling faster with no price drop. Even PS4 had a price drop.

PS4 went from $399 to $349. Then later got price drop to $299.

They need to lower the price.

The PS4 / PS4 Pro are just $100 less than the PS5 Digital Edition / PS5.

vs

The PS2 was $130 when the $500/600 PS3 released.

The PS1 was $100 when the $300 PS2 released.

Not in the slightest. Not to take anything away from the PS4's success but the industry is different than what it was back then and consoles are being sold more and faster than before. Heck the Switch is getting there!

Agreed on all points. It is very much like a PS2 in many regards - game selection and variety being the most prominent.

I think it's hard to disagree with this, especially coming off of the previous gen where both main consoles struggled to break 100 mil. PS4 has sailed past that easily and is still selling. It is also still an excellent value proposition, much better than next gen consoles, which is why it most likely continues to sell so well. It has also demonstrated itself once again as a clear choice, albeit not as strikingly as the PS2 dominated its competition.

If the price is decreased, I expect it to have no problem passing the PS2 in sales.

@girlusocrazy: Exactly. Just made the same point above. The market surely is much different than when the PS2 released: more money is spent on gaming, and the biggest benefactor is the Playstation followed by the Switch.

Eroica made a thread that I think aptly pointed out the value behind the PS4. I minimized the value of my base PS4 until I got a PS5 and moved my PS4 to my office, and I find myself using it pretty often!

This was my thoughts. There are more consumers, more disposable income, and more acceptance of gaming, in general. What the PS2 accomplished was way more impressive. The PS4 did awesome, though.

The shortage affects PS4 too, so they can't lower the price.

The PS2 sold way more units.

Also, the Standard PS5 is now selling at a profit already.

The PS4 is definitely a success but the PS2 was a monster in terms of sales and longevity.

That's.... completely stupid, given Sony is not in a phase where enough people HAVE a PS5, let alone can play one (Scalpers) to DO THAT. Plus, it takes them YEARS for them to do that when they sell that much (see: PS1 and PS2).

They're basically doing it already. PS4 is sold out completely, but they're still barely shipping any of it.

Oh, I'm talking about hardware, not software btw.

In what world is 116 million more impressive than 155 million? If anything it's less impressive not just from a sales perspective, but also gaming is much more mainstream/widespread now compared to back then.

Switch is only 27M behind, despite releasing 4 years after. Will be interesting to see if Switch can catch PS4.

Very impressive numbers. People should put some respect on Playstation's name.

The PS2 will forever have a special place in my heart.

Selling over 100 million in any generation is impressive. People need to credit Sony who are in my opinion the console kings.

It's not a matter of "if" with the Switch and PS4, it's a matter of "when" at this point.
