@tormentos: I take it that you have nothing to disprove my argument then?
@soulitane:
PC(the term does not even work here) is striving to compete with consoles, but until there is a complete product on the shelf it is not directly competing. The closest real life competition would actually be AMD or Nvidia as there is some form of brand. However, buying into those brands brings up a complexity level for general consumer.
What you said does nothing to disprove my argument. It doesn't need to fill the exact niche to compete, it just needs to be able to play games and take customers away from consoles.
There's no base pc product. I agree to an extent because I think it is in the process of happening--with the resolution/performance stress in the media. However, as of now most people see the process of building as a daunting one, and the more directly related products like Alienware/steam machines are in much higher price bracket.
They are in a higher price bracket and have been for quite some time. If nobody was buying them, they wouldn't still be sold, as another option to game on, hence in the competition of machines to play games on.
That is like saying high end sports cars are in competition with cars sold on everyday lots. It simply isn't the case.
Price differential is much greater so comparison fails. Ferrari F40 is 500k to a million compared to a Honda at 23k. Many more human beings can afford the price of a pre built gaming PC than a high end sports car. Alienware Are 51 can go as low as 1400 compared to a 400 dollar console that still nedds subscription to use online. Strawman argument. PC is an option for people looking for a machine to play latest games.
Even 100g cars don't compete for the same market as something in the 15 to 30g range. My point is that you don't see sales ads and you don't find them next to consoles in retail, if at all. They are still specialty items. Consoles fill a gap for companies and consumers. People on this forum seem to forget that they were once kids that likely played games. And as kids, their first consoles were often gifts from their parents. Seems odd but this still happens. This consumer base is not going to research building a gaming pc--that arena is still a niche enthusiast crowd(albeit growing as I stated earlier).
When I start seeing ads about building a pc or pre built machines in competitive shelf space, then I'll agree they are directly competing.
(I'd like to stress that I've been saying pc is on the rise and going to eat a portion of the console market this gen)
