PS5 price leak... too good to be true?

Notebookcheck reports that Canadian retailer Play N Trade Vancouver Island has opened preorders for the PS5 at CA$559.99. Converted, that is roughly US$396 or £318, which would make the PS5 a tiny bit cheaper than the PS4 was at launch ($399 or £349).

The weaker 9.2TF machine should be cheaper, remember 12>9.2, so it should be at least a hundy cheaper, but imagine if MS matched the PS5 price, well then you will see even more meltdowns from cows then what we're having now.

Well, that would indeed make the PS5 highly competitive. A $400 price tag could alone spell doom for the XSX.

Isn’t it rumoured that the cost of the PS5 is like something over $450 or so? If that’s true then Sony would probably be eating quite a bit of the cost selling it at that price. I’m pretty sceptical that they’ll do that. Regardless though it’s certainly not something that would matter to me in getting an Xbox Series X as from what I know about that system I’d be perfectly fine paying more for it anyway.

Hard to imagine it would be cheaper or even equal to the price of a PS4 when it was new, which was 399.

PS4 Pro's still sell for 399 new.

Exactly, Sony are cowards and don't have full confidence in the PS5 to reveal its price and will wait for MS to go first, so to try and undercut them.

@ronvalencia: what correlation is there between the RX 570 and 5700? After Polaris AMD moved into a new naming scheme. Current flagship 5700 XT replaced Vega 64 which replaced Fury X. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems the 5500 XT would be RX 570 replacement.

Chip's area size i.e. 5700 has 256mm2, 470/570 has 232mm2 (~PS4 Pro GPU) and R7-265 has 212 mm2 (~PS4 GPU)

Sony roughly stayed within BOM cost range for the GPU side.

We already know it cost Sony $450.00 just for parts...just the parts.

Factor in the manufacturing, construction, marketing, shipping, any tariffs and it's unwise to set your expectations to this rumor.

With that in mind, and knowing that the $450 for PS5 parts isn't the final price that it will cost Sony to "make" the PS5, it's best to temper expectations from rumors like this.

I'm still sticking to my expectation of $500 for PS5.

People are really shortsighted thinking Sony skimped on cost compared to MS in their machine. They just focused on different things. Currently PS5 has the most advanced SSD in the world compared to even the fastest 1TB SSD on PC which cost $200 alone...and PS5's SSD is far superior. People forget that.

MS spent more on GPU tech, Sony spent more on SSD tech. That shit wasn't free just like MS's higher rated GPU wasn't free though fanboys like to pretend that it was.

Everyone should *expect* both PS5 and XSX to be a minimum of $500 up to $600.

Those are probably just space holder prices based on last gen systems. They'll be corrected once offical prices are revealed. Retailers do this often.

I still fully expect PS5 to be $500 US.

If it does get announced at £449 they couldn't have got to a more competitive price. It would definitely maybe pursued me to get one quicker than I thought I fully expect the x series to be around the £599 price point.

The only logical thing that comes into mind when your hardware is sold at a loss is to make your software widely available in other non competing platforms or implement an extreme in game "surprise mechanics"

Although looking at the ads at the bottom of this page, I see amazon has one for 345.00

I would not be surprised to see 399 PS5 and the Xbox 499.

Price is the only thing that could really help PS5, could be less than SX but with the custom ssd stuff I doubt it.
