According to Jeff Grubb, the PS5 Pro will cost at least $600 and possibly $700 at launch.
Ouch.
Will it be worth it? Will cows raise their legs and get milked for over $1k in PS5 hardware (launch PS5 and upgrade to Pro)?
$199.99 with a free new 1st party game packed in or bust!! ;o
Oh wait, BS Jive has no new 1st party games so ... No sale. lol :P
Makes sense when you consider that console prices have gone up this gen (with the exception of Nintendo, which hasn't gone down)
It is certainly feasible that with the requirements to be considered an "improvement", couple with the inherent "premium" Sony tax, I could see it being at least $600.
That would be a disaster, but I don't think Sony has really felt like they need to change anything yet. They are still the #1 console and have kind of felt invincible since the PS4.
I think some hardcore will make the upgrade, but I think it will sell worse that the PS4 Pro (estimated at 14m)
I've been waiting to get another PS5 for a while, the ones we have are in use and I haven't gotten as much time as I wanted. I'll be interested to see the price and differences of the rumored Pro, or if this will drop the price of the standard PS5.
$600 is very fair. $700 is the max that would be an OK for me.
So price is not the issue. THE ISSUE IS THE GOD AWFUL CPU. If you ask this kind of bling bling money money dollaz, YOUR SHIT IS BETTER BE TIGHT from all sides, not just the gpu. I don't want to play in native 4k, and still have permanent sub 60fps drops. I don't want to play in a stable 60fps to have my resolution drop sub 1200p either. And that is the bast case scenario. In reality, you will get a 1440p-1600p game upscaled to 4k with constant sub 60fps drops. Wtf is that? That ain't worth anything remotely close to $700.
So yea, the issue here is that the specs of the system are poorly balanced out, not the price. An expensive PREMIUM system is perfectly acceptable if it offers a real, non bullshit, premium experience.
Assuming the rumoured spec is true: 600 I could see. 700 though....ouch.
It is basically looking like 2X raster, maybe 4X RT, 10% more CPU power and slightly faster ram (no bump in capacity apparently) compared to the PS5. It will also be able to use Sonys answer to DLSS which is currently an unknown.
So it's basically just going to take PS5 games and clean up the image a bit and have nicer RT in places.
How likely is the price? Well due to high inflation, we haven't seen a price cut for the PS5 or XSX since the start of the gen. So 600 is pretty close to the current PS5 price. Maybe it will get a price cut when the Pro launches though.
700 with that spec....that's going to be a tough sell. It's really not that much of an upgrade in terms of console bumps. Maybe a bit better than the bump from the PS4 to the PS4 pro. But not much. I certainly wouldn't consider upgrading if I currently had a PS5. If i wanted to push the idea of more expensive consoles (which is worth exploring): i'd want to use a more robust spec that the rumoured one to sell the idea.
I maintain that Sony should keep their powder dry and focus on making a Path Tracing focused PS6 for 2027/8. These Pro consoles are awkward in that they do steal some of the next gen consoles thunder but are also not that great of a bump in terms of output. If you are going for Specs: A new console should really wow people.
In all fairness, the PS3 launch price was $599 (U.S) but at the same time, back in 2006, PS3 was massively packed with everything within that year making it the cheapest Blu-Ray drive because the drives were expensive back then. It also had built-in Wi-Fi which was a separate accessory for Xbox 360. It had a memory card reader array that could read just about anything, especially Sony's proprietary memory cards. It also had fancy at the time Bluetooth capability that could handle 7 controllers and other devices. And it came with Internet access.
If PS5 Pro is gonna cost $599, (can't see it being $700) the problem I have with this as there are no new features other than just bumping up the specs and this isn't the PS3 flavor we got back in 2006. The regular PS5 is as powerful as it can be if developers just take their time with it. I still say Sony fans don't really need a mid-gen upgrade IMO. But hey, I'm just a PC gamer, so what do I know right?
thats a lot of money to pay to play Xbox studios Black ops 6.
The multiplayer reveal is currently happening for PlayStations biggest and best selling franchise...check it out.
@davillain: I understand the PS4 Pro didn't make up a significant amount of PS4s either. Maybe not that many people care about additional performance and good enough is good enough.
That’s like the same price as a current mid tier GPU. It’s gonna perform like a mid tier GPU from 2021 though, so 😬. It sounds like a lot of money to the console crowd, but tech isn’t necessarily cheap. I’m not really sure if the crowd looking for these mid gen consoles is big enough to warrant their existence. But it’s not my call…
yeah, that's not totally unexpected. A 2TB Series X is already $600. lol
I would guess its between that if the series x 2tb is 600 then the pro has to be more.
Good point. I would imagine even the most modest of upgrades would be sold at a loss at even $700 msrp. PlayStation might wanna just hold off on this thing…
$600 seems reasonable...$700 is pushing it...it'll probably sell to the enthusiasts only at that price point cause casuals will just stick with the base PS5
Leaks say it's 600 dollars and it's just the no-disc version for now. So that's 600 USD + 80 USD for the disc drive.
Also lmao at console gamers saying PC players always upgrade when they'll most likely do the same here.
billbil-kun: name of the next PS5 model is indeed "PlayStation 5 Pro"

Considering it will be more of a luxury/premium console I don't mind it being priced higher. It is an optional purchase. Nobody needs to buy it. It is there to give peasants the illusion of quality. If you really care about quality, you should be playing on PC as always.

That's entirely the point; it's a PRO model.
The person who's buying a $600-700 console is likely the same person who's buying a $200 DualSense Edge.
@Pedro said: That is a steal. PS5 Pro is worth more than $700 especially since it is almost on par with a RTX 4090.
Will it be able to run Cyberpunk on high in 120 fps? 🤣 Rtx 4090 is almost of the size of of PS5 itself. More likely it will be on par with rtx 3080.
If Sony put more effort into its VR segment, if it was able to run its VR games at higher fps and resolution then it would be worth it. But for just regular games, naaaaah.

Given the specs that leaked, its more likely going to be equivalent to the 7700XT (original PS5 is 5700), or a 3070.
Next Gen consoles MIGHT sniff the 3090, but that would heavily depend on power and how good Strix Point is.

Next gen should focus on 1080p gaming with dedicated AI upscaling using a beefy dedicated NPU.

100% Agree, but console gamers would cry because they cant fight about resolution lol.
This comes from a person with a 4090.
Every time I have to choose between resolution, fps, and max settings, resolution is ALWAYS the first sacrifice. It an arbitrary talking point in an age of DLSS/XeSS and the new thing MS just introduced.
Side note, the MS super resolution currently only works from that fixed 1080p resolution and upscales to 4k from there. Id imagine that will be incorporated in the new series of consoles in some way.

After I have seen the results for Auto SR, the future of next gen console and rendering was made pretty clear. I wish this tech existed when I was pursuing 3D viz.

you do know psvr2 is 4k at 120fps right. the eye tracking helps that. only see high res of what you looking at. it keeps up with you eye and you don't see it happening. it fades out stuff your not looking at.

Eye tracking is very cool indeed. Nevertheless, the textures and and objects at distance still look blurry compared to Quest 3. If you go closer and focus on object it looks ok, but if you move a bit away and the view becomes foggy. I still need to try the PC adapter though. Maybe PC VR can add some crispiness to the headset. And I don't think it's actually native 120 fps, more like AI generated 120 fps based on previous frames.
What a hustle this gen is. So we finally start getting current gen only games, and instead of showing us what they can do with those “current gen experiences” out come the “pro” consoles. 😬
I’ve barely seen anything that’s made me want to upgrade from my Series S, let alone an interest me in a “pro” console.
@hardwenzen: I thought a 8/16 Zen 2 was supposed to be pretty good.
I think they’re pushing the GPU, which is causing the lower frame rates. I doubt many games are pushing the CPU at all this gen.
Also, what is the “pro” going to do to next gen consoles. GPU/RAM upgrade now and in a few years another one… For $500?

It will be about equivalent to a 4070.
And do you honestly think consoles releasing 4 years from now won't absolutely stomp a 4090? ( I'm guessing thats what you meant to type).

You believe that Sony is going to release a console with the GPU performance of the RTX 4070 at the same price as the RTX 4070?

No, I meant 3090.
This happens every generation, where console owners expect the new systems to top the best PC GPU on the market...............yet somehow they want it to cost $500. You have to pick one.
There's no way a CONSOLE is going to have a 4090 equivalent, in a closed box that can sit in an entertainment center and not heat up the house.
Even PS5 and Series X were built on AMDs older tech, so were consoles before it.
You honestly think that Sony and MS will put out 8-$900 consoles?
PS5 Pro will not be a 4070. The current consoles have a 5700, jumping to a 7800XT/7900XT is a generational leap, one that next gen consoles still wont hit. You are not getting a 3090, let alone a 4090, in a closed box unless you want it to be a 400w monsterbox that costs $800 (minimum)

Then you are wrong.
Yes it does and in no time in history has a 4 year old GPU beat a new console. You are essentially saying we will have no improvements in tech by 2027/2028 which is laughable.
A 3090/4090 will not be high end 4 years from now and it will not beat brand new consoles either.
It has nearly 4x the RT performance it will be closer to a 4070 and the PS6 will mudstomp any GPU currently available unless technology just completely fails to improve.
