The Switch COVID sales boost isn't going to last forever and, Xbox isn't going to match PlayStation.
That being said, we won't really know how well these consoles can perform until the shortages end.

They aren't really selling poorly; the install base is simply really small in comparison.
Ex. A game like Ghost of Tsushima sold ~6.5M copies to a base of ~115M PS4s. That's a 5.6% attachment rate.
Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart has an attachment rate of ~10%.
Returnal has an attachment rate of ~5%.
The assumption people make is that early adopters are big consumers of PlayStation exclusives when that's simply not entirely true. Tons of people buy PS5s just to play popular titles like Call of Duty, Fornite, Apex, FIFA, NBA 2K etc. It's a big reason why they're the market leaders in the core space.
