Sony needs to just take the L for now and realize that they have a comfortable lead in sales and software development.

Announcing a PS5 too early will only make their customers feel burned and might cause more backlash than good will.

To be fair, the thing is not announced. They can be working on it for a while. If they do announce it this year, it should have a release date far away - otherwise they would basically be flipping all of the PS4 Pro adopters off.

Announced the same week or month Scorpio launches whenever that may be is my expectation long before they are actually ready to make one, promising the moon along the way, with an unattainable launch window that insists the "small wait" of 1 year (+/+ 1 year) will be worthwhile and to ignore scorpio altogether. Some of the gaming press will eat it up and regurgitate the ps5 promise with increasingly positive speculation. Expect a DF article a month later fellating ever aspect of its fantasy specs. But yeah, a PS5 announcement during scorpio launch can hurt scorpio and possibly even cripple the pro as collateral dmg.

I mean, I think that's basically the Scorpio's game right now. That's what these companies do - dangle carrots to keep people psyched about their line whenever something from the competition comes out.

I predicted this at the start of the gen. Since they are using essentially "off the shelf" parts now they will be upgrading every few years. The R&D costs are probably way down too.

I always wondered what was the reason for Sony rushing in releasing so many new hardware in a short period of time last year. Now I could see why because they they want to get all those things out ASAP so they could likely announce the PS5 sooner during 2017 E3. Both MS and Nintendo have new exciting hardware in 2017 and Sony don't want to miss out so an announcement at least will get them some buzz. As for BC, I don't think their fans care for it that much and with Sony loving PSNow more, I don't think they will even if they could.

I doubt they would announce it unless the Scorpio started eating too much into the PS4 Pro. Because as you said, such an announcement would also damage their own sales. If the PS4 Pro ends up being profitable and maintaining market share, I don't know why Sony would announce PS5 at all... at least not until it is closer to a more normal launch window.

It was kind of baffling what MS did with the Scorpio, considering people should have been more excited about the Xbox One S. I probably would already have an Xbox One S if I didn't know about Scorpio and decide I'll probably wait to check that out whilst still playing my vanilla PS4 for now.

This is an interesting rumour. I wonder what ND will come up with for the PS5. It beats wondering which multiplat will perform best on MS's budget PC the Scorpio.

That would be great if PS5 was BC, and it was able to have a positive impact on the framerates of PS4 games. Maybe the games would all be able to be consistent on their 30 or 60 fps.

When MS releases their dud of an overpriced console maybe sometime late this year it will be too late. The Pro will have the price advantage the game advantage and the install base advantage that will will have Microsoft leaving the console market faster then you can say Xbone part 2. People don't understand the the PS4PRO was a minor revision of the hardware aimed at PSVR and 4K TVs, so people who would be likely to buy expensive products more regularly anyway, think people who buy iPhones every year, why not take their money.
