Alright everyone, the psp is NOT a flop.

Recent NPD says it sold over 200,000, I think it was around the 220k mark but im not sur. If you dont know, thats a crapload and that was in the US alone. PSP is selling great, whether youd like to accept it or not. Hell, the only thing that ever beats it in sales are the wii and ds(both are monsters btw:P) and sometimes the ps2. The psp is selling great, it already has a 25mill base. Please stop comparing it to the ds when you call it a flop. The ds is destroying it but does that make the psp less desirable at all, no. The psp is making big bucks for sony and I think sony are content with the psp right now. I dont think the psp will ever reach or surpass ds in terms of sales but its doing good on it own right. I think by the end of its life, psp will have sold at least 40 mill. The thing sony has to concentrate right now should be selling software, not psps. I think if they want to make ever more money, theyre gonna have to sell more software for psp since its software sales are abysmal due to a)lack of good games b) huge ass homebrew community(me being one of them but I buy games that are good to show support for developers:P).

Basically the psp is doing amazing but the ds is doing super duper ultra recharged alpha crazy amazing and when comparing their sales it just makes psp look worse.

Compared to the Nintendo DS (and the GBA), Nintendo is still owning about 70% of the handheld marketshare.

On it's own, it's doing well enough. I think it's a great machine. I am around WiFi hotspots constantly and that's a big plus. But it's an expensive luxury because I do own more than one battery pack and had to get a Playgear Pocket to protect it. But it's worth it for the wealth of features along with some good games for a core gamer like myself.

For the moment, this is it in handhelds. Nintendo and Sony. Maybe Sony wants to keep the PSP around for a long time and try to slowly bring in some revenue. It's the clear graphical winner so no need to hurry those kinds of advances.

The term "flop" in system wars is used when something does not meet hype. The PSP was hyped, by almost all media outlets, as a DS killer. That did not happen, and so, it is a "flop." Of course, my personal opinion of the PSP is quite high. I love mine and feel it was a great purchase.

The PSP was dubbed the "DSKiller" by nearly every media outlet, and it was supposed to "bring gamers out of the handheld ghetto", as stated by a Sony rep.

Here is where it stands currently: 20+ million units behind the DS, abysmal software sales(due to piracy?), and a failed media format(UMDs)

Verdict? Flop, since it fell far below expectations.

Yeah the PSP did flop, it was overhyped, and really didn't deliver in the sales department VS the DS. If you would have told me that the DS was going to take 70% market share over the PSP when they both came out I would have fell to the floor laughing.

I think this is the time that Ken Kartargi lost his mind, and became ELITE. He stopped listening to the market, and thought that, he knew exactly what the market wanted, instead of listening to the market research. He mistakenly assumed we wanted more functionality.

In reality the PSP is an amazing device, it can play movies, games, music, store pictures, store files, surf the internet, watch TV. The usability is weak for most applications, however they do function. I really don't like surfing the internet on a PSP.

If the PSP had a touch screen, and the safari browserit would be in a much better position, becuse the internet would be usable. However the TV out port does make the PSP finally attractive for HMD movies, and gamming scenarios. I just hoped they speed up the load times on games.

The fact that Sony has been able to have any kind of foothold in thehandheld market is enough for me to not classify the PSP as a flop.

psp is not a flop. The only thing psp is losing is sales...but NDS beats every single console in sales too.

The PSP is easily the most successful handheld to compete against Nintendo. 20 million sold (worldwide) in a little more than two years is certainly not a flop.

Although Sony may not have dethroned Nintendo, they are doing reasonably well. Nintendo has dominated the handheld industry for years, even while their console(s) didn't do so well, they still ruled the handheld market. Now Sony comes along and gives something decent. Of course they're not gonna take over completely after Nintendo ruled the market for ~20 years.

Yeah I wouldn't say the product flopped. If you belived the hype like I did, then it did flop in my mind.

Sales wise it didn't do bad at all, and was a great success. 25 million in 2 years is great. Just the 45-50 million DS sold is much more spectacular.

Okay, why are some ppl talking abt games, im talking sales. That really all it comes down to at the end when considering whether a product is a flop or not.

PSP: Conventional control scheme, works well with most games. Console like gaming experience in portable form. Many franchise games. Some decent console ports/crossplat games.

DS: Unconventional control scheme that works well with some games, and horrible with others. Many mini game collections and franchise games. Some very horrible console port/crossplat games.
