A while ago, my brother lost my nintendo DS. Since it's close to christmas, I thought it would be good to invest in a new portable device. I need some help deciding between the two because I'm not an expert on portable systems. Please tell me the pros and cons of the DS and PSP.

Neither.

  1. Ask for money.
  2. Save for 3DS.
  3. Buy 3DS on release.
  4. ????????
  5. Profit!

Both systems are good if that's the way you wanna go, but it's all up to you on which has the best games.

If I were you i would wait until early 2011 to make you're choice. The Nintendo 3DS hits NA next year and the games that are coming out for it seem great. Also, even if you don't want the 3DS, the launch of this new system will probably mean ether an official price drop on the DS, or stores giving you great deals to clear stock to put the 3DS on shelves. As for PSP, rumors of the PSP2 are brewing so again, the wait game is on. Also, it all depends on the games you want.

If you decide on DS, then wait until early next year and get a 3DS instead, unless it cost a crazy amount like $300. If not DS, then PSP would be a great choice. Even if PSP2 was announced today, you probably wouldn't be able to hold one in your hands for quite some time.

How old is your bro? Most likely he'll probably want a DS; it has a good collection of RPGs and even kid/"family" games. Because of the many multimedia devices out today (namely, the Ipod), the PSPs multimedia features aren't necessarily a plus; unless of course he prefers the PSP games like Metal Gear, GTA, Daxter etc...

Besides game preferences, the only other downside to the DS is the graphics, but the disparity between the DS/PSP in terms of overall GAMING quality is NOTHING like that of the Wii & HD consoles. In my opinion (and I'm sure I could get the majority of gamers to back me up) the DS has an edge over the PSP when it comes to overall gaming.

--

I'm 18, my youngest bro is 6, my oldest bro is 9 and my sister is 16 (she's a gamer). If I were to choose between the DS & PSP for myself and all of them I would choose to give each a DS. My sister prefers action/adventure/ shooters (Battlefield bad company 2, red dead redemp, half life etc...) but the PSP just doesn't deliver on that front.

--

Oh and yes... WAIT for the 3DS if you can, both the games you like on the PSP and DS are gonna be there (Genres, not IP). Resident Evil, Metal Gear, Zelda OOT, Kid Icurus and many others. Then again who knows what the PSP has in store.

This. 3DS will play DS games and it is the next gen of handheld gaming. The lineup of games are already amazing. I cannot wait.

I have been tempted to get a PSP, but I prefer DS, and with the lineup of games coming to the 3DS it would be foolish (if you like these games) not to get it. It has the best lineup of games I have ever seen on a handheld and heck most consoles. It has:

Ocarina of Time remake (updated graphics and in 3D. That is all thats known so far)

New Paper Mario (some of the best RPG's IMO)

New Mario Kart (Mario Kart DS was my favorite mario kart, so the new one on 3DS sounds promising to mee :))

MGS3DS (seems to be a MGS3 remake with better graphics and probably some different gameplay and such. Not really sure what this is, besides its an MGS haha)

New Kingdom Hearts

Splinter cell (remake of one of them I think I am not sure)

Super Street Fighter IV

Animal Crossing

Professor Layton (if you want a puzzle adventure game)

Star Fox 64 remake (updated graphics and in 3D. That is all thats known so far)

Kid Icarus

and more

get a DS. You can find so many great deals on them right now. Would you really buy the 3DS on launch? Prices will be high and stock will be short for months, just like the Wii was. It probably wont be until after Christmas 2011 where you'll be able to walk into a store and just get a 3DS off of a shelf.

Plus it will likely be $299+ for the system and $50+ for a game. Pick up a DS on sale and a couple of decent games now for sub-$200 and sit back and watch how the 3DS does for abit. Personally I can wait another year for 3D gaming....

i was speaking psp vs. ds not 3ds vs. ds. If you new that, then ok. But the 3ds is looking like an absolute beast with it's lineup and graphical power. :o

1) $299 is NOT the price. The price is unconfirmed and based off of past pricing the price in North America will be $250. Could be $199 could be $299. But nothign is confirmed

2) Why spend $150 or so on a DS when you could spend likely $100 bucks more (give or take) to have a machine that plays all those games and all the new games?

3) $50+ for games? Where do you get these prices!? Nothing has been confirmed and most games will PROBABLY be around $40

4) 3DS does way more than 3D

I'm going to say go with the best of both worlds. Get the PSP for Christmas and then with whatever money you get with your gifts use it and save for the 3DS in March.

Hah now that seems pricey :P. If its doable go for it, but personally I am hoping for the PSP2 (or whatever its gonna be called) to be backwards compatible with PSP games cause I do not own a PSP and I personally couldnt quite justify buying one for PSP games alone. PSP2 on the other hand I may very well buy down the road.

What's the difference in games?

Both systems have great libraries. What you have to do is decide what you want. What's the genre you really love, is it RPGs, puzzle games, platformers, etc.

From what I've seen and read, the PSP's gameplay ressembles it's big brother's type of games such as : MGS: Peace Walker, Burnout Revenge, Wipeout Pure, SOCOM and God of War: Chains of Olympus.

As for the DS, it's big force is rallied under 3 main types of games: Puzzle, Adventure, RPG. From new IPs such as TWEWY, Elite Beat Agents and Picross 3D, to sequels of great series such as Pokemon, Professor Layton and Dragon Quest IX, and to remakes of great games like Chrono Trigger, you can't go wrong.

Also, you should consider looking at what are the upcoming games that interest you the most and then decide which system is best suited for you. And don't forget that scores aren't everything, its the experience that counts.

Small disclaimer, I do in fact on a DS and not a PSP.

Both systems are good, it really goes down to what games you prefer to play. You do have to remember that the 3DS comes out in a couple of months so the support for it will die within the next year.

Y can do 2 things here. Buy a psp because of the recent surge in good games, or you can simply buy neither and save for a 3ds or psp2. I'll save if I were y though.

Plus once the 3ds and psp2 are out then the ds and psp will be dirt cheap, as well as their libraries.

I'm an srpg fan and like the PSP's lineup better. If the DS had a good Fire Emblem then it would be harder but Final Fantasy Tactics and the upcoming Tactics Ogre makes the choice real easy.

Either get the PSP or just wait for the 3DS. You can play DS games with the 3DS.
