'Cause they're not biased in the slightest :|. The RPG genre isn't dead, there are plenty of new releases each year. With games like Fallout 3, Valkyria Chronicles, Crisis Core, Eternal Sonata ect. coming out each year, the genre is progressing with leaps and bounds, even if there aren't as many as during the glory days.

JRPGs are sagging a bit. It would be nice if they would try and shake things up a touch....

The RPG genre has some good titles available and upcoming, but we could still use more.

I just don't see how FFXIII will change things. It will sell really well and will probably be amazing to play, but what will it do?

I think the JRPG genre could use some new ideas - the whole town dungeon town dungeon with tons of battles and sterile npcs in between is getting a little stale.

First high selling and high scoring RPG this gen maybe? Persona 4 is the only AAA console RPG (as far as I know) since this gen started, but its a last-gen game. The RPG genre certainly does not need saving though, there have certainly been less titles then last-gen when I typically had a great RPG to play every 3-6 months, but I'll live.

Haha. I hate that, especially when a game doesn't live up to your expectations. You find your self trying to complete a story, only to be burden with poor dungeons that waste time. From what I read about the cost system and Final Fantasy XIII it just makes combat more cinematic. It also adds a touch to turn-base combat when making a strategic decision.

Well I figured that, but what exactly will that do for the market of RPGs?

I guess it is more of a question to the people who wrote the article because most of us here think the genre doesn't need saving.

"Poor man's version"? First, the site's called PSXTREME. Second, they haven't seen it, yet they're trying to act like they know something we don't. Credibility nonexistent.

I am going to say the JRPG genre in the States is dead. Maybe i am just not caring, but i am not hearing about all that amazing stuff about any JRPG other than FF (which i am not a fan of anyway). IMO, Western RPGs is where it is at.

I think its more that you are not caring, although the bulk of my favorite RPGs have been on handhelds this generation, so maybe that is telling.

There have been some a handful (ok, like 3) modern-gen JRPGs to come out this gen. Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia and Val... V Chronicles. The genre isn't dead. Its just slowed down some. I don't think its dying either, just slowing down. I think the turn based system is about to get a shake up. I don't think that there is something wrong with turn based combat by default, but the way its been done this gen is really dumbed down. Chrono Trigger is a great example of how to make turn based combat fun and exciting. I feel like somebody is going to eventually make something thats almost a hybrid of real time and turn based and it'll be a breath of fresh air. WRPGs are doing their thing, but we are really coming to the point where people are basically making anything a "rpg". Fallout 3 is a good example. In the past, the best thing about RPGs where the stories and the characters. Fallout 3 is a game with a crappy story and basically no memorable characters. What makes it fun is the setting and the combat, which is like a mix of FPS and turn based (only the player gets a turn though). I think thats one of the first to really no longer be an "rpg" but more of a game from a different genre that threw in dialog trees and an inventory system.
