That sucks. What do you think, SW? Is this going to be the new normal? Is it the end of $60 games?

Possibly, I don't think sports games that rehash the same assets and gameplay mechanics every year should cost that much BUT
Games are getting larger, more detailed, and just take more man hours to make. I'm surprised $60 has been the norm for so long.
If ture I will be buying more games on sale and buy less new games day 1 next gen

Yeah, you're looking at $75 for one game. Unless it's a game I'm really hyped for, the incentives would have to be good.
I believe this is the start. Once one publisher starts, they all will. Remember the multiplayer pass?
Troubling, but if I wanted it I'd wait a few weeks, game will go on sale. Thankfully I don't play these games.

yeah i know gamers want larger worlds and better graphics but our cheap asses don't want to pay for all that. we are the ones that going to make the game industry crash again or these games will get shorter and shorter.
but then again 2 months later the games will be 20 to 30 bucks by then. I don't get it lol.
You also have to buy the $99 version to get a cross-gen upgrade.
I *really* hope none of this is standard next gen.
---
You might as well buy the last gen copy and, use backwards compatibility. lol
Maybe ms will make a true AAAA exclusive now.
Oh wait gamepass will cut to much of the profits nevermind.
Oh great, as if we weren't paying a high enough price here in Canada already. I hope this doesn't start a trend.
@gifford38: Exactly, most new releases other than Nintendo games will get a $20-$30 discount after a few months.
I mean at $70 a game that's $140 for 2 games, ad a third and that's $210. That's really adding up not including TAX!
Sales are going to be my friend next gen

nope sony is using smart delivery as well as xbox. so you get the ps5 version for free if you have the ps4 disc. but its up to the developer.
Kind of surprised that they haven’t gone up yet. New games here in Canada are already $80 so this will push them up to $90. Also taxes here are 13% so a game will be over $100 total.

Yea it’s brutal. 5% here in Alberta though. A bonus moving here, and cheap gas. Funny that PSN doesn’t charge tax. Not that I noticed in Ontario or Alberta anyway. I bet Quebec is charged it lol.
@SOedipus: Yeah it’s a bit of a give and take depending on where you live. It is funny that you don’t get charged taxes on PSN purchases as you do on Xbox and Nintendo.
It’s funny though because I remember back in the SNES days I paid $100 for Street Fighter II and $125 for Chrono Trigger before taxes.

I was just a kid then during SNES era, but I remember some N64 games being over $100. I think they were sports games too.
@SOedipus: Yeah those were expensive as well. Don’t even ask how much those Neo-Geo games cost. 😅
@Star67:
I'm not an American, so a question. You pay $60 for a game, plus tax? How much tax?
In UK you pay the price and that's it. That's one thing that annoyed me when I visited New York last year.
That all depends on the state. In your terms, add a few quid onto the MSRP.
I knew this day would come. AAA gaming comes with a price. Though it seems kind of fruitless when the price of games (excluding Nintendo) always seem to nosedive anyway. Guess everyone's just trying to cash in on those first week sales.

North America (and possibly other countries) add tax at the sales counter, as opposed to VAT which is already included in the shelf price. Different states pay different taxes, but in Canada, we pay a sales tax in Ontario of 13%, which is lower than the 20% VAT. Hell, it was 17.5% before I moved to Canada.
Truthfully, games have needed to increase in price since the 360/PS3 era. The return on investment is why we're getting such garbage titles, nowadays. I'll gladly pay an extra ten dollars a title if it means less shoehorning of micro-transactions into games and hiding more things behind paywalls.

You're way too hopeful, man. I remember the days of people saying when games finally went digital, they would be cheaper because they would cut out the middleman. What poor naive fools we were.
@R4gn4r0k: They'll do both, cause they're giant cunts.
That is the expectation yeah :(
With sports games they can get away with everything.
EA: "we promise we'll get rid of lootboxes, but of course not for our Sports games because people accept it there."
2k and T2 thinks they can get away with it. Casuals who buy rehashed games yearly will still buy this even at its 69.99 price.
Being Canadian in this case sucks.
Also, why would pay that much to play a casino simulator? Screw that.
You forgot to say that's just for the standard edition. Remember the Gold & Collector's edition? That's how they made the money back this gen. Oh wait, they are profiting from Kobe's death....right into 2K pockets. Tell me if the following pic is confusing or not. I would say every other game can justify for this....just not NBA 2K21.
You forgot to say that's just for the standard edition.
Oooh, are 2K cashing in on Kobe's death now?
Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. Games really haven't gone up in price for quite some time. I remember when the standard price was $49.99 and that was like 20 years ago.
Either way, can't remember the last time I bought a game full price. Independent games are like $30 on average and offer a far better value, and there are often sales to be had for more mainstream titles.
@R4gn4r0k said:Production costs for games has gone up, so I'd rather this reflect in actual game prices than the implementation of more shady mechanics.
That's a fair point. I mean games plus season pass already cost around $90-110 depending on version.
I wish it was another franchise though, seems a bit petty to pay full price for the nth installment of a sports game series.
@R4gn4r0k: They'll do both, cause they're giant cunts.
Hah! Probably.
A shame they own the rights to so many good games. Civ, XCOM, Bioshock, etc.
